Re: [slim] Let's Duet

2009-07-06 Thread method man

kempjef;438442 Wrote:
I bought a Squeezebox Duet about 2 months ago. Ripped my 500 CDs to MP3
320 (using Itunes for the most part), updated all firmware and software
upon availability, dumped McAfee and started up AVG virus detection,
dumped my Belkin router for a D-Link 628 (the Belkin had chronically
dropped my network connection for no apparent reason), worked a good bit
on tagging my collection w/ MP3Tag when necessary, enabled the beta
option for controller headphone output (and made the SSH modifications
to the LUA file so that it actually functions). I use an ethernet
(rather than wireless) connect, not because I had problems w/ the
wireless, but just because the ethernet wire was an easy choice in my
 case.

The bottom line? It's AWESOME and works nearly flawlessly. I have a
U.S. Robotics Wireless Access Point going in the back room, and the
controller even roams between the router and the WAP smoothly. I can
grab the controller from its cradle and fall asleep in bed w/ headphones
on, listening to anything from BBC to my Dave Matthews CDs to XM Online
(which also works fine as a plug-in). Album Art is a challenge at
times, especially when switching between Players (it's beta!), but
that's a tiny problem I can live with.

Audio quality is amazing. My 500 CDs are now in two small Caselogic
folders in a shelf on the hall, instead of being spread all over the
house. When pressed, I'll even switch the music source to my teenagers'
Itunes collection upstairs (for as long as I can stand hearing Black
 Eyed Peas).

Admittedly, I'm a computer programmer by profession and don't mind
being an early-adopter. But the fun level has been huge. I've
re-discovered my music collection (I actually like Dido, a CD I had
ignored for years!). And it's a great conversation piece when friends
 visit.

I'm sure there's more -- but I just wanted to say that it's a great
 product when applied with care!

hi mate. how and where does one do this? ''(and made the SSH
modifications to the LUA file so that it actually functions)''

and when u say you have used ethernet instead of wirelss. ive noticed
quite a few people say this. and im a bit confused. does this mean u
have a wire between the computer and your receiver?

Re: [slim] Let's Duet

2009-07-06 Thread method man

hi. this is the bit i dont get from your link ( i had read it before)
log on to the controller and go to the directory
/usr/share/jive/applets/SqueezeboxJive and edit the file
SqueezeboxJiveApplet.lua.

is this directory on the controller? and if so waht does log on mean
and how.

re the ethernet. my question is more simple. have u got a wire running
form a pc/laptop to your squeezebox reciever?

Re: [slim] Let's Duet

2009-07-06 Thread method man

thanks tcutting. im going to pass on the first paart. i may ruin what i
have.
as for the wires. i cant really do that. for me the whole point of the
squeezebox is to wireless stream digits to my DAC-AMP-Speakers Hi-fi. If
I wanted to use a wire/cable. I would have just used itunes wired to my
DAC with a cheap optical or diggy coax. So i was just trying to work out
If I had it right.

so theres a lot of people on here using a wireless device wired? is it
the controller that they are getting the benefit from?

Re: [slim] Let's Duet

2009-07-06 Thread method man

ah i see. for me. i have a large L shape living room. the computer is a
one end around the corner of the L and the hi-fi is more on display at
the other end in a bay window. The whole point was wireless for me. but
with an external dac/optical output and CS quality for Lossless files.
so far so good.

I just need recommendations on upgrading my very old modem/wireless
router? any ideas what works well with all the squeeze stuff. as im also
thinking of getting a Boom. and that wont be in the same room.

Re: [slim] My personal thoughts on Squeezebox concept.

2009-07-02 Thread method man

I bought the duet about 2 weeks ago. it worked from the start.

Its true the hand contoller loses connection a bit, and runs a bit slow
occasionally. but i leave it for 5 seconds and it catches up. but i have
an old crappy wireless setup that needs updating. especially if i want
to use the controller in another room.

But Ive been generally happy and when its working well which is most of
the time, its a great bit of kit. However. i do feel a bit sorry for
those that bought it when it first came out. i wouldnt rush to be the
first for a new one LOL

Re: [slim] Thread on Sonos board

2009-06-30 Thread method man

well ive had both in the last 4 weeks. as richer sounds sold me more
stuff than i needed. and i could easily get away with a duet. the sonos
was a bit better out of the box. but now ive got this working well. its
just as good. looks micer. and i prefer the remote. i could have had
either. money wasnt the issue. if my duet had been a let down. it would
have gone back and i would have got the right sonos kit.

[slim] whats my wireless setup like?

2009-06-25 Thread method man

I’m after some advice guys from the more technically minded.
I’m streaming music from a PC to a Squeezebox only about 18 foot. But
I’m still getting dropouts etc.
I realise the reliability is 90% down to ones own wireless setup and
strength. Heres my problem.
its a bit of a dark art to me. I have quite a new Dell PC on Vista
connected to the interent with a
Fairly old Speedtouch 570. I understand this is an internet
modem/wireless router combo? I was sent this by Tiscali a few years back
when we went on Broadband. But it doesn’t have enough outputs so I
linked up a Belkin Wireles G Router that someone had lying around to the
Speedtouch. Somehow it worked and the Squeezebox worked straight out of
the box. (it wouldn’t connect to the Speedtouch just the Belkin).
The controller is a bit flakey, and I get buffering when trying to play
FLAC. So I was wondering if, my kit is a shambles, and if so whats good
stuff to buy. (ps we run a laptop off of the wireless too

Re: [slim] whats my wireless setup like?

2009-06-25 Thread method man

hi rich. how do i go about trying a different channel ( I can tell u
that my controller found 2 neighboring networks) and if i change it will
the laptop still work?

and waht about my belkin router plugged into the modem/router? is that
what is normally done. or would it be better straight into the PC?

cheers

Re: [slim] whats my wireless setup like?

2009-06-25 Thread method man

hi thnaks. but wouldnt that mean 18foot of wire from the router to the
squeezebox reciever. if i was going to do that I wouldnt bother with a
squeezebox and just take a wire straight from the pc to a DAC/Amp.

but thanks for clearing up that i have the router plugged in correctly.
I also agree that maybe the speedtouch wireless is just complicating
things. i will see if it can be turned off.

but it still dont kknow how to change chanels.
