Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android
Squeeze Commander stopped working after my Android phone upgraded to the latest operating system 6.0.1. Specifically this app couldn't find my Squeezebox. So I found an alternative app that works fine with the latest Android operating system. "Squeeze Ctrl" is the app that works with the latest Android Operating System 6.0.1, also known as Marshmallow. I installed the app, and then entered my login information for my account at mysqueezebox.com and then closed the app and then reopened it and the app found my Squeezebox. I purchased "Squeeze Ctrl" because my 2 other apps, Squeeze Commander and Logitech's own Squeezebox Controller, couldn't find my Squeezebox after my Android Phone (Galaxy S5) was upgraded to the latest Android Operating System. mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69352 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] the new Squeezebox products are good (because servers and linux are burnt toast)
I finally decided to try a low power squeezebox server. I purchased a SheevaPlug. I have never used linux before. I have spent the past few days and many, many hours getting my SheevaPlug set up as a squeezebox server. In the process, I have posted several questions and contributed several tips on the #8220;3rd Party Hardware#8221; forum here. Linux was supposedly touted as an open source, community based, non-profit effort to democratize software. The reality is that a tiny fraction of 1% of computer users knows what linux is, and it is a very very tiny fraction of those that know how to use it. And it#8217;s a very very tiny fraction of those who contribute to this knowledge and try to be helpful. And it#8217;s a very tiny fraction of those whose information is reliable. The promise of linux has failed for small community based projects. I received no direct responsive help in setting up my SheevaPlug even though I put out a few questions on these webpages#8217; #8220;3rd Party Hardware#8221; forum. (I contributed information too). I assume the looky-loos who viewed my questions either didn#8217;t know the answer, or had the same question, or knew the answer but chose for whatever reason not to respond and be helpful. All my comments have #8220;gawkers#8221; but no responses, no replies, no comments at all. I relied on my own perseverance and my helper Mr. Google. And in the process of researching one roadblock after another while setting up my server, I came across webpages with cryptic advice, misleading advice, bad advice, broken links, out of date information, out of date files, incompatible files and programs, fragmentation of the SheevaPlug line (between manufacturers and even over time within a manufacturer#8217;s own line as the installed operating system changes), bad grammar and bad spelling, such that putting together a server on a SheevaPlug was being like Sherlock Holmes and Inspector Clouseau all rolled into one (stumbling and bumping into problems and solutions). If a supposed linux #8220;expert#8221; has bad spelling in his explanations, how can I trust that his coding is reliable, where every little character, punctuation mark and space have meaning? I attempted to register at the plug computer forums to seek advice there http://www.plugcomputer.org/plugforum/ but its been several days without any confirmation of my registration. I want to sincerely thank the authors of the helpful pieces of information found on the internet on the subject I have been researching, including on these forums and the Logitech webpage devoted to setting up squeezebox server for SheevaPlug, and the few other web pages devoted to the same subject. But this is a handful of people volunteering their help. How can you compare that to Microsoft#8217;s billions of dollars in research and development by thousands of full-time trained software engineers with advanced computer science degrees in a corporate structure of supervision and review? Linux never had a chance for these esoteric projects (squeezebox server on a SheevaPlug) when it relies on the goodwill of a handful of strangers, who have their own lives and issues to deal with first. This got me thinking as to what this lack of response and lack of crystal clear instructions and advice and lack of easy set up means about the future of Logitech#8217;s Squeezebox line. I saw a video the other day where a poll on the street found that no one even knew what Wi-Fi was.I can assure you that a lot fewer know what a server is, or want a server, or need a server, or can afford a server or have the time to set up and maintain a server. And as stated in other threads, very few people collect music these days or know how to digitize it (and every year those that do collect music are becoming a smaller and smaller share of the market). And why should they? Yeah, you might have thousands and thousands of music tracks. But the everyman out there in the market sees that Rhapsody and Spotify and Pandora and SiriusXM have millions of tracks. Logitech knows this. Logitech is a for profit enterprise. It can#8217;t be expected to devote scarce resources in this competitive world to focusing on yesterday#8217;s techy audiophile consumer when the world is traveling in another direction. mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96352 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] ask Rhapsody if it is interested in managing mysqueezebox.com
Maybe a more realistic approach to keeping mysqueezebox.com viable is to appeal to the profit incentive of ONE online service to take over. Say, ask Rhapsody if it is interested in managing mysqueezebox.com in return for it being the EXCLUSIVE online service? If Rhapsody calculates that it can keep and grow more subscriptions than its costs of maintaining mysqueezebox.com, then Rhapsody might be interested. In fact, Logitech should consider a partnership with Rhapsody before throwing the baby out with the bathwater (whatever that means). This may be more practical than asking users to donate to an ongoing operation. Who would do the billing and accounting? Who would do the software updates? Who would interface with the online services as API's evolve? Who would protect the intellectual property of the online services? It would really be asking for volunteers which is not viable for an ongoing dependable service. On another thread there was a discussion about Logitech selling mysqueezebox.com and LMS (Logitech Media Server), but it might be more practical for Logitech to PARTNER with an online service. A partnership keeps Logitech's options open in case it evolves its squeezebox product line into new directions or back into the old model in the future. Logitech would be able to hedge its bets while offloading to Rhapsody, for example, the day-to-day maintenance responsibilities. mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96284 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

A review of the forum requests by users for services and updates to services implies that Logitech is not investing resources at the moment. Even the Logitech webpage for Squeezebox is out of date as to the services offered. Content providers will show interest if they see sufficient market penetration for the squeezebox. They do a cost/benefit analysis just like Logitech. If the missing content providers see that they can reach a tipping point for eardrums, they'lll come to the platform. In order for Logitech to be more mass market, it should lower the price, turn up the volume and get rid of the LCD screen to keep the cost down (it's more efficient to put control into the user's hands on already owned multi-purpose devices, like iPeng on the iPad and the iPhone). Logitech already has the hardware for such lower cost products. It just needs to open up its software to make it easy for the content providers to be enticed to the platform. And as to the complaint that the Roku model generates a lot of uninteresting content, the solution to that is simple, don't listen to it. Pick and choose your favorite service providers and ignore the rest. Even on the Squeezebox now, I don't listen to over 90% of what is offered. We should be so lucky to wade through excess content to find what we want. mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Although Squeezebox may provide good control of a local server-based music database, the demographic trend for future marketplace growth, as seen in the recent prior posts, is for internet streaming music. This is where Squeezeboxs problem is. The squeezebox walled garden approach is falling behind the marketplace. End-users beg for new services and request updates to existing services, and Logitech is either non-responsive or slow in responding. If Logitech wants to continue to be a player in the music delivery arena, it should be looking to Roku for a model business plan. Roku sells 3 different boxes, with its top of the line priced at $100. and going downwards from there (far cheaper than squeezebox in this cost conscious world). And Roku is an open platform. Here is how Roku works with content developers: An open platform, Rokus Streaming Player enables content owners to bypass traditional distribution routes and reach views and consumers directly. Rokus platform allows a wide variety of channels and monetization options. There is no fee for joining the Roku Developer Program or for publishing a Roku Channel. Roku does not host any content. Your Roku channel connects to your existing service and servers or CDN to locate and stream your content. http://www.roku.com/developer I arranged for the Stitcher podcast service top brass to contact Logitech to host the Stitcher service on the squeezebox platform. Logitech wasnt interested. That was frustrating for me and really crystallized Logitechs problem with squeezebox. Content providers want control of their own hosting service, rather than be captive to Logitechs whims. Both consumers and developers want more than Logitech currently offers. Unless squeezebox can meet these dual challenges, it will squander any hope of future opportunities. mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] What if Logitech pulls the plug
Logitech is laying off employees and losing money. Here is a link about the layoffs: http://allthingsd.com/20120608/struggling-logitech-bites-bullet-lays-off-450/ It is not in a position to be pursuing niche markets. It is refocusing on the mainstream user with simple products that are easy to use and have widespread appeal. Its not going to be doing anything involving servers. Most people don't know what a server is and don't care about them. The future is cloud services. The future is renting rather than owning. If you don't own anything, you don't need a local server. The original squeezebox was developed when there were no streaming audio resources, no cloud services. It filled a need when some consumers started ripping their own CD's to their computers and wanted an easy way to listen to them. The original squeezebox was just a step up in the evolution of music listening from the multi-carousel CD player. Now consumers don't buy CD's. Why should they? They can get any track, any artist, any genre, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for just $10. per month without the hassle of maintaining a server, or ripping CD's, or any of the other chores associated with collecting and maintaining your own music collection. And you'll never own even a fraction of the albums that the big boys have, e.g. Rhapsody, Spotify, etc. Look at the movie industry. DVD sales are down because it is easier to rent a movie on demand from your cable TV company, or though Amazon Video on Demand, or the several other movie rental services. Same thing has happened to the music industry. Why do you think Roku is so successful? Because it is open source, easy for a new company to put its app onto Roku and then stream to the public. And it is easy for the public to use a Roku. (A lot easier than Google TV) (And Roku, being open rather than a walled garden like Apple TV, offers much more choice). The public wants easy. If there is any future for Logitech to help deliver music, it will be on the Roku model, if at all. mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Better Logitech products than the Squeezeboxes
Regarding battery life of a cellphone or iPad, my experience is that when not being charged, with screen off, just with wifi on to receive the audio stream and bluetooth on to broadcast the audio stream, there is relatively slow battery drain. My typical scenario is that I pick a streaming service, select an album or genre, and then put down the source device without the need to look at the screen while listening to the audio. It is only when the screen is on that battery issues arise. If you prefer to keep the screen on, there are multiple charging options: an a/c extension cord, a usb extension cable, and for apple products, there are extra long charging cables.Any three of these solutions, or a combination of them, will bring the actual source device into your lap while being charged. As far as audio quality, this isn't your grandfather's bluetooth. I am very happy with audio quality. There are many reviews of these suggested products on amazon.com and the vast majority are very favorable. I don't know how a remote control setup would work to have one mobile device control another mobile device. I haven't tried it. As far as I know, an app on one mobile device can only control the audio on that device, not the audio on another mobile device that is using the same streaming service. I am not too familiar with Sonos, but I thought this was another walled garden where you are at the mercy of the selection of apps that Sonos picks, versus the more open world of the app stores for ios (apple) and adroid. I guess there is no such thing as a perfect device. You give up synchronizing between multiple rooms, but you gain more selection over current and future audio streaming apps. And as mentioned on another thread, even if mysqueezebox.com doesn't shut down, there is still a risk that services now hosted on mysqueezebox.com will be updated to the point of not being compatible with mysqueezebox.com if no Logitech employees are there to coordinate the updates. mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95977 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Here's a favorable review of the Logitech bluetooth boombox that compares Airplay and bluetooth quality: Despite the recent attention AirPlay speakers have received, this speaker demonstrates precisely why Bluetooth options will continue to be viable for the foreseeable future http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/logitech-wireless-boombox-for-ipad-iphone-ipod-touch/ As far as I know, bluetooth is just another digital form of transmission, a series of 1's and 0's. That being the case, the quality of the audio is not determined by the bluetooth format, but rather by the quality of the digital to analog converter in the product. Logitech has put in high quality converters, as far as my ears can tell. mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95977 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Better Logitech products than the Squeezeboxes
I have 6 squeezeboxes (3 classics and 3 booms). I have used them for a few years. However my needs required that I look for a different solution. What I have found is better than the squeezeboxes for my needs. I thought I would share these alternatives with you. I bought the Logitech Wireless Speaker Adapter for Bluetooth Audio Devices and also the Logitech Wireless Boombox for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch with Bluetooth (better model than the Logitech Wireless USB Speaker Z515). The wireless speaker adapter connects to an existing stereo system. The boombox is self-contained in that it has its own speaker. The source of my audio is streaming media from my iPad, my iPod Touch and my Samsung Galaxy Nexus cellphone. All these devices have bluetooth and pair easily with my new gadgets. Any bluetooth capable device should be able to pair. Audio quality is great. I find it just as good as audio from my squeezeboxes. I feel I now have more control over my streaming media. I used iPeng and SqueezeCommander apps to control my squeezeboxes. They are great apps. Now that I am mainly using bluetooth devices, I use the respective streaming apps for control. For example, I have Rhapsody on my phone and Spotify on my iPad. I use the Rhapsody and Spotify apps to control the music. What prompted me to get these new bluetooth devices? I like podcasts. I was using mediafly on the squeezeboxes. However mediafly stopped providing this service. I suggested that Logitech replace it with Stitcher. Logitech ignored me. Stitcher also contacted Logitech directly. Logitech wasn't interested. I think this is because Logitech is not devoting the resources to the Squeezebox line like it used to. Advantages of my new bluetooth devices: As new streaming apps appear for IOS (Apple) or Android, I don't have to wait forever for Logitech to decide to put these apps onto the Squeezebox. My impression is that there won't be any new apps added to the Squeezeboxes. My impression is that there won't be more development or improvements on the Squeezeboxes. It seems to be an end of life product. (I am openminded if Logitech proves me wrong, but I am not optimistic). On the other hand, IOS (Apple) and Android and their respective apps are constantly being improved and with more choices arriving all the time. My new solution is also cheaper for new customers. The cost of these bluetooth devices and maybe an extra home charger for your cellphone or iPad in the room where you listen (if you don't want to worry about battery life) is cheaper than buying a new squeezebox. So there you have it: cheaper, more control, and a future. mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95977 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] What if Logitech pulls the plug
I believe the Squeezeboxes are end of life. There most likely won't be any improvements to the line hardware-wise and no new apps. However the corporation Logitech will continue and because of the large squeezebox user base, it is very doubtful that the mysqueezebox.com service will ever disappear. Cloud hosting services are getting cheaper by the day, so it won't cost much for Logitech to maintain this database. But there are examples in internet history for once popular services to shut down. If it does disappear, I started a new thread as to what I consider a better alternative, as far as streaming services are concerned: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?95977-Better-Logitech-products-than-the-Squeezeboxes mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] No more free last.fm on the SB!
The disappointment over this news is probably derived from the expectation by a big percentage of the listening public that all music all the time anywhere should be free. We have become spoiled to the overwhelming free music opportunities available to us. However the days of free music are slowly coming to an end, at least if you want some measure of choice in what you want to listen to and where you want to listen to it. That is why spotify is having trouble debuting in the US. It's business model is not viable (at least in the eyes of the record companies). The more choice you want, the more you'll have to pay. I use Rhapsody and I consider the $10 per month charge a bargain for any song, album, artist, genre, playlist, channel and station on my squeezebox and on my cellphone. Lastfm has to start becoming economically viable too. It's charge of $3 per month is eminently reasonable. The record companies are slowly adjusting to the new world order of making their music available for a reasonable price and the streaming radio services will be adjusting as well. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85478 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Hail Mary time for Logitech with its Google TV?
I like the squeezebox flickr app as seen on the new iPeng for iPad app (would like to see the pix full screen like on the original iPeng for iPhone). Actually the squeezebox flickr app would be a good feature to see on a TV with the Logitech Revue. Maybe Logitech could make a cut down version of the Revue which doesn't have cable box integration for say $99. which of course should include squeezebox integration. When you're the only game in town, $300. might have been acceptable. Now that the competition has lowered the price of entry, Logitech has to offer something at the lower prices too to stay in the game. I thought Logitech makes money off of Napster and Rhapsody and the other subscription apps on the squeezebox. If Logitech doesn't, they should. Maybe just enough to keep the Logitech cloud servers humming so one day we don't all wake up and find there is no more mysqueezebox.com Actually, which brings up a new issue: if Logitech abandons the squeezebox line, what happens to mysqueezebox.com? Is that needed to connect to all the online services through the squeezebox? -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82366 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Hail Mary time for Logitech with its Google TV?
All of a sudden a lot of players are coming to market with TV connected boxes which just so happen to also play music, so actually you don't have to connect these boxes to a TV, just connect to your stereo system. Apple's AirPlay may be a game changer when it comes out in November. A $99. Apple TV (second generation) may have more functionality at one-third the price of a squeezebox. The updated Remote app for iPod, iPhone and iPad will let you see all your music on that device plus internet based music and stream it to your Apple TV with the arrival of AirPlay. I predict (we'll know next Wednesday) exactly what Logitech's Google TV device can do. I assume it will include among its features ALL of the current squeezebox features plus the new video stuff too. [slim] Thank you to iPeng for a great app
I wanted to start a separate thread to show my appreciation and hopefully others appreciation for the hard work by pippin for the iPeng app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. I know there is a separate thread for the announcement of the recent iPeng update. That thread is focused on technical issues to give feedback to help with future improvements. This thread, on the other hand, is focused on just showing appreciation for the hard work of the developer. I am sure that the amount of time, effort and expertise that went into the iPeng app far outweighs any revenue he has received. I am sure he hasnt been able to quit his day job. Sometimes when I am burning the midnight oil on a project where I might perceive that the tangible and intangible benefits dont exceed the costs, I might eventually burn out. In those situations just a little positive feedback is enough to keep me on track. The value I have received from iPeng far outweighs the minimal cost of the app. I saved on having to buy a separate Logitech controller. $10 vs. $2-300. seems like a pretty good deal for me. I already had an iPod Touch and now an iPad so it was an easy decision to go with iPeng. The convenience of iPeng for controlling my squeezeboxes has added to their value tremendously and made listening to music that much more enjoyable. Re: [slim] Logitech Google TV
Well this will incorporate the squeezebox space. It won't replace a squeezebox, it will just be another way to get the squeezebox features. Just look at it as another model in the squeezebox line. Think of this new device as similar to a squeezebox duet receiver, in other words, a squeezebox without a screen. Since this new device is intended to meld with a TV as a TV set top box, the screen will be the TV itself. On the TV screen you will see all your familiar squeezebox features, from Pandora to Rhapsody to Shoutcast, etc. Just think of the TV as a big screen to view your music choices. On the TV screen you can pick what you want to listen to. The audio will be pumped out of both analog and digital audio outs on the back of the Logitech TV Box just like on the back of any squeezebox product now existing today. Nothing new here. The only difference is that instead of a screen on the device or on a separate controller, the screen will be the TV. Now, you may ask, how do I control this? Simple: You'll have three basic choices - you can buy a Logitech Harmony remote, of which there are several models to pick from, and thus use this remote to navigate around the TV screen to make your choices. Or, you can use the included mini remote controller if you don't want to splurge for a separate optional Harmony remote. The included mini remote will be similar to the small remote you get with a squeezebox boom today. It does the trick for getting what you want without the luxury. Finally, you can use your android phone as your controller. There will be a free app which Logitech will have available on launch date for the Logitch TV Box which you can download to your android phone and just use the touchscreen of your android phone to control your choices of music. Oh, you want the launch date? Ok, here it is: September 22, 2010 if all goes according to current plans. This will give enough time for the ecosystem of hardware and software to flow as one and also to get the android 2.2 operating system into the hands of developers and have a lot of apps available on launch date. (At the moment, everyone is using android version 2.1) What apps you may ask? Well, we are talking about say Rhapsody porting over to the Logitech TV Box their excellent android app now available for android phones. So basically you can see the app on your TV screen instead of on your phone. Now, you may ask, I like the like the idea of using my android phone to control the Logitech TV box but I want to put it somewhere connected to my great stereo setup but not to a TV. Can I do this? Of course. The android app that will be available for your phone will control the Logitech TV Box even when it is not connected to a TV, but just connected to an amp or stereo receiver or powered speakers. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79007 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Logitech Google TV
The big question is whether the entire existing squeezebox code in the squeezeboxes and in the software for the server you install on your computer will all be rewritten in source code applicable to android. Because Logitech is now betting the farm on Google TV because of the potential market being vastly bigger than that for the audio only kind of market, everything may be rewritten for the android ecosystem. Part of the announcements today include cloud based sync of music to leapfrog the capabilities of itunes and Logitech will be incorporating this feature into their TV box and their squeezeboxes as well. Logitech is going to focus on Google sync of music rather than the mp3tunes app currently available to squeezebox owners. Rather than worry about visuals, my sugggestion is on adding functionality. One feature on the LCD screen of my squeezeboxes which I find to be most helpful that adds to the listening experience is that when on the Now Playing screen, by clicking to the right, there is a new screen which adds choices to listen to the same or similar artists or the same or similar song or similar playlists on the other music apps, such as on Slacker, on Last FM, on Pandora and on Rhapsody. Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad?
The iPad is not for everyone. It is not a be all, do all machine. It won't cook you your breakfast. That being said, it is basically a larger screen iPod Touch. The large screen benefits for visual features: reading email, tweets, blogs, webpages, books, magazines and newspapers; watching videos and movies. You have access to youtube and can buy or rent movies and television shows. As for multitasking, it can access your own music files for listening to songs on your iTunes library while you use any other program (called apps). I know it can do this because I can do this now on my iPod Touch. There are thousands of apps in many different categories. You need to browse the iTunes app store to see if any fit your own interests. E.g. if you like games, they should be more enjoyable on a bigger screen. It can't fit in your pocket. So you are going to have to think twice before taking it out of your house. It can't do what a real laptop or desktop can do, namely access flash based websites (although I understand that within a very short time, a new web standard known as html5 will replace flash and be accessible by the iphone, ipad and touch). It can't run photoshop or other sophisticated programs. It probably can't do file and print sharing on the local network. It's not clear if it can even connect to a networked printer. But, it does fit a niche for many. On the couch or a lounge chair or in bed, if your focus is reading or watching or listening rather than typing, then the iPad will be much more comfortable than a laptop. Less bulky, lighter, easier to move around with and easier to see than a small scren Touch. I look forward to it. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74572 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] to wait for the touch or install a plug
This thread raises bigger issues. I too only use my squeezeboxes to access internet radio (rhapsody, etc.). I also don't have a local server. However the implication of this thread is that there may be reasons to have a local server other than just serving local music files. Is that correct? If so, could someone please describe the reasons why a local server may be advantageous even if the customer is not interested in serving local music files. Also, this thread raises an issue by implication as to what I have seen the attitude of Logitech is towards those of use who don't use a local server. My impression is that we are treated as second-class compared to those using a local server. The development of software seems to be focused first and foremost on the local server and very very belatedly almost as an afterthought on the squeezenetwork (now mysqueezebox.com). I am sure the statistics are that the vast majority of new users of squeezeboxes are only tied to the internet and not to a local server. Yes, I understand that the origins of Slim Devices is local server based but new users don't have the technical skills to set this up or do have the skills but don't want to bother with the hassle. It is the same reason e.g. that Apple is now transitioning from the download music business to the streaming business with its purchase of Lala. Most people realize that having say 100,000 tracks on your own computer is not as good as having access to over 5 million tracks in the cloud (even though it is not owned). Most people look at music now as a rental just like you rent tv through your cable company). Anyway, back to my original question - is a local server a good idea to enhance the listening experience even if I am not interested in serving local content? -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74336 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] rhapsody and the new web-based remote control applet
Thanks for the update to the remote control. Both Rhapsody and Shoutcast seem to be fully working now with the mysqueezebox.com applet. Remaining issues: 1. There is no available way (that I can find) from the mysqueezebox.com computer or its remote control applet to synchonize two or more players together. I know I could do this from the server software but I don't use that software. Also my iPeng app on my iPod Touch can easily synchronize players via the mysqueezebox network with no local server. So can we expect another update to add the synchronize feature? And if so, when? 2. In Rhapsody, when drilling down on submenus to an album, it takes up two lines of text on the top of the remote control applet, however the bottom half of the second line of text is cut off. Can the applet be fixed to show the second line without it being cutoff? If so, when? 3. A great feature on the hardware screen of the squeezebox is that I can be on any music service, e.g. slacker or lastfm, and when a song is playing from that service, a menu item is easily available to play the same song or artist on my Rhapsody service so that I can easily switch to Rhapsody to hear the music at the higher bitrate offered by Rhapsody without having to start with a search on rhapsody. It is very convenient. I would like to see that feature on the remote control app too. Can that be done? If so, will it be done and when? 4. On the Now Playing screen of the remote control app, it would be nice to see the time remaining for the current track, just like on the hardware screen of the squeezebox. Will that feature be added and if so when? [slim] rhapsody and the new web-based remote control applet
Several people have complained over the last two months as to the problems with the new web-based remote control applet at mysqueezebox.com, ever since it debuted. Specifically, shoutcast is totally unusable. And Rhapsody can only play channels, but no albums. Yes, I can use the hardware remote control with infrared to play albums, but why are there still bugs in the ability of the software remote control at mysqueezebox.com for this feature? I am quite confused as to why Logitech has not: 1. Fixed the issue yet. 2. Even acknowledged (as far as I know) that there is a problem. I called today to both Logitech and Rhapsody technical support. Both companies forward the calls to Phillipine call centers where nice people read from scripts and have no idea what I am talking about. In the old days, maybe a year ago, there was participation by Logitech employees on these forums. A year ago, I could call technical support and talk directly to an empoyee at the slim devices company. Now, there is no logitech employee feedback and no one to talk to who even knows about this problem. I am frustrated that two months since the new web interface has debuted, I have no idea if: 1. Does Logitech know about this problem? 2. Is Logitech working on this problem? 3. When will this problem be fixed? No, I didn't report this as a bug on a separate web page where I would have to do a new registration to log in. I am not going to hassle with that. Anyways, others have already reported this bug two months ago. In the old days, reporting a problem on this forum would be enough to bring it to Logitech's attention and get it fixed, usually within 24 hours or less. Bottom line - what's going on? Two months is long enough for this major problem to continue. I don't use a local server. I rely totally on internet music, like Rhapsody. I like to use my computer on occasion to conrol Rhapsody on my squeezebox. Rhapsody offers free listening on a computer but with fewer choices than what you can choose to hear with a subscription. [slim] Online radio stations strike big deal on royalties
Online radio stations strike big deal on royalties By JOELLE TESSLER, AP Technology Writer - Tue Jul 7, 2009 2:41PM EDT WASHINGTON - The future of Internet radio appears more secure after a handful of online stations reached an agreement Tuesday to head off a potentially crippling increase in copyright royalty rates. The deal is the product of two years of negotiations between webcasters and copyright holders. In March 2007, a ruling by the federal Copyright Royalty Board dramatically raised the rates that Internet radio stations must pay artists and recording labels leading many online radio stations to warn that the new rates would put them out of business by eating up as much as 70 percent of revenue. At least one popular online radio service Pandora Media of Oakland, Calif., which derives much of its revenue from advertising said the new agreement will help ensure its survival. For us, it's hard to overstate how significant this is, said Pandora founder Tim Westergren. It was either this or an ugly alternative. The revenue-sharing deal announced Tuesday is between SoundExchange, a nonprofit that collects royalties for recording copyright owners from digital radio services, and three smaller webcasters: radioIO, Digitally Imported and AccuRadio. Westergren said Pandora plans to sign on to the new royalty terms too. And Jonathan Potter, executive director of the Digital Media Association, which represents webcasters and other online media companies, predicted some of the association's other members will also join the deal. Under the agreement, large commercial webcasters will pay copyright owners up to 25 percent of their revenue or a per-performance rate that is below the rates set by the Copyright Royalty Board. Smaller webcasters will pay either a percent of revenue or a percent of expenses. In a statement, SoundExchange executive director John Simson said the deal will give webcasters a chance to flesh out various business models and give artists and other copyright holders the opportunity to share in the success their recordings generate. Lawmakers also praised the agreement. Congress has already passed legislation making any deal reached between webcasters and SoundExchange legally binding. Because Internet radio companies operate under a government license, these deals need congressional authorization. Already this year, SoundExchange struck new online royalty agreements with the National Association of Broadcasters and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Traditional AM and FM broadcasters are exempt from copyright royalty rates for over-the-air radio play, because that airplay is thought to provide free promotion for artists and labels. But the broadcasters are subject to the new rates for any songs streamed over radio station Web sites. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65373 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Napster - now just $5 per month for streaming service
From what I have read about the record industry's demands for royalties, it is based upon the number of times a song is played. The more times an internet radio station plays a song, the more money has to be paid to the royalty collectors (riaa, bmi, soundscan, etc.). I understand there are complex formulas that are still evolving based upon number of listeners, number of channels and total revenue, however song plays continues to be part of this forumula. Thus Napster's costs are variable, not fixed. The more music Napster plays, the more it has to pay to the royalty collectors. (Motorcycle legend Jesse James, who started his career being a collector for Rick Rubin, co-head of Columbia Records, has a tatoo on the palm of his hands with the script Pay Up Sucka). Thus it is hard to believe that Napster can still make money by lowering the price of its subscriptions, if it is indeed below its costs. Since Best Buy owns Napster, maybe Best Buy just looks at Napster as a loss-leading marketing tool to (eventually) drive traffic to its digital music sales. I believe this is what Walmart is doing with its own music sales. Since Rhapsody is not owned by any conglomerate (although it is its own mini-conglomerate with its venture with MTV), maybe this is indeed bad news for Rhapsody. I guess I just feel sorry for Rhapsody because it took the risk to pioneer this type of subscription format and now maybe it is threatened if indeed it can't meet this new challenge from Napster. If it is Rhapsody that eventually goes, then Napster may have a monopoly. Not good for the consumer if prices later rise. And as mentioned earlier, not good for Logitech, to the extent it depends on its own stake in its premium services. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63479 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Napster - now just $5 per month for streaming service
The downside risk is not because of increased royalty payments, it's that the number of new subscribers might not be enough to make up for the lower subscription fees.[/QUOTE Wrote: My opinion is that Rhapsody is going to face two risks going forward: 1. My understanding of the formula as to how the record industry is demanding royalty payments is that royalties will go UP as Napster increases its subscriber base; and, 2. As subscriptions increase, Napster won't be able to keep up with demand resulting in poor service. Just look at ATT and its iPhone. Its network in general can't support the demand for 3g service from this phone. I see Napster facing stress on its servers causing an inability to deliver. And if it goes to a cloud service, it will have to pay increasing fees to the cloud provider. I really see this as a black-hole for Best Buy, just like youtube has become a cash-burner for Google. Google has been trying for quite awhile now to make youtube self-sustaining however it has yet to create a viable model. Best Buy doesn't have the resources of Google and if Best Buy sees that Napster is dragging it down with no hope of a turnaround, it will cut it loose. The concern is that along the way, Rhapsody will burn out first, leaving no subscription service featuring on-demand songs, albums and artists. If Napster succeeds, then great. I believe in capitalism. However I just have this dread that in the long-run this new model from Napster may hurt the whole subscription model for this type of service, leaving us with no Napster, no Rhapsody and nothing to take their place. I don't find the playlists offered by Pandora, et al to be an equal substitute for the on-demand experience I now get from Rhapsody (and I assume from Napster too). -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63479 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Napster - now just $5 per month for streaming service
I am very concerned that you mention that the VC (venture capital) money may be running out for Napster. If that is the case, I see their new gesture as a hail mary pass that could possibly have devastating consequences for both itself and Rhapsody. If you sell a service below your costs (this is hypothetical as I have no idea what Napster's costs are) then you are not going to make up for it by increasing the volume of sales, or even by mooching sales from Rhapsody. All you are going to do is get customers used to a certain price point and then when you later raise that price to a sustainable level, you will most likely lose those customers again. Not a very viable long term strategy. When you compare the prices (before price drop) of Napster and Rhapsody, they are bargains for what they deliver: any album, any song, any artist on demand. I use my Rhapsody service ten times more than I use my cable TV service, and yet I pay ten times more for cable TV. So if my math is correct, that means that internet radio is 100 times cheaper than cable TV. Many years ago I remember a neighbor of mine started a small shop to rent roller skates for use at the beach. When another skate store lowered its prices, then my neighbor lowered his prices even more. This spiraled out of control to the point that it put both stores out of business. If Napster's strategy is to try to put Rhapsody out of business, then this may be an anti-trust issue. I encourage healthy competition, not predatory pricing. Of course all of this is a result of the short-sightedness of the record companies who are not pricing their own products in a healthy manner. Record companies are forcing this upon Napster and it may be the ruin of all the companies. Record companies don't get any royalties from terrestial radio although there is talk in Congress about changing that. If radio stations pay, maybe there will less pressure for internet radio to pay more than their fair share. I hope Napster is playing fair with its new price structure but I doubt it. I am going to stick with Rhapsody for the moment till I see where the dust settles. I am more than happy to pay value for value. I understand there is no such thing as a free lunch. I understand that Napster may be underpricing in a last desperate misguided attempt to survive. If that is the case, then rest in peace Napster. I won't be party to your shenanigans. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63479 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Idea for Logitech Music Server
How about this for a Logitech Music Server: Instead of Logitech debuting a hard disk based server, how about a Logitech Music Server that, instead of incorporating a hard disk, instead just has an iPod dock? Logitech already has several iPod dock speaker products: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/ipod_mp3_speakers/cl=us,en How about just using the dock part of these products, take out the speakers, take out the amp, and just have a flashable (for firmware updates) dock that incorporates the SqueezeCenter software and wifi? Then connect your music library via your iPod. Voila, a Logitech Music Server based upon its own existing products. That way, Logitech doesn't have to compete with existing hard disk based servers (your own computer or a NAS). It would be inventing a whole new category of product: the iPod based wireless Music Server to serve the Squeezebox line of products. Also, since the SqueezeCenter software would be embedded into this dock, there would be no need to have your computer powered on. An analogous product would be the Linksys NSLU2, because that product also doesn't have built-in storage, but rather, you add your own. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSLU2 Since Logitech already supports the iPod with an entire range of products, it already has the expertise to make this type of Music Server. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58010 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

However whether the Linksys system does or doesn't, I am suggesting that wireless distribution of an iPod is a good idea for Logitech. The idea I propose is to make an iPod based server for access by any Squeezebox on the local network so that when the Squeezebox is directed to connect to SqueezeCenter, that the connection is made to an iPod based music server which has SqueezeCenter embeded. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58010 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

There are many situations where I don't want my computer on while listening to music (save energy to save the planet). I assume that the proposed iPod server would consume far less energy as a slim client. In addition, having the embedded SqueezeCenter include the WaveInput plugin should enable playing radio streams from the iPhone/iPod Touch as well. I see that at the moment there are some internet radio services available to these Apple devices which are not currently available on the Squeezebox: Wolfgang's Concert Vault, Finetune, Ourstage, and Deezer (only available in Europe on the Squeezebox). It would be great to have these services connected to any Squeezebox on the local network as well. Finally, maybe add a usb port to the proposed iPod server in case you want to add a usb hard drive instead of an iPod. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58010 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Rhapsody Subscribers....
I don't think its fair to ask for a whole month credit just because you have to push the play button a few exrra times while the engineers work out the bugs. The record companies are short sighted in their greedy royalty demands which are pushing internet radio companies to the edge. Don't do the same thing. The squeezebox itself continues to have its share of growing pains. You put up with that. Certainly you can give Rhapsody some slack as it fine-tunes its service. There is no other company that offers on-demand music for artists, tracks and albums. Re: [slim] Slim Devices' crocodile in the bathtub
Actually there are two crocodiles. In addition to the debut of the Apple App Store, a few days ago Apple updated the firmware of the Apple TV to version 2.3. The Apple TV, which is equally an audio player as well as a video player, with its own built-in hard drive for storing music files, can now, with the update, stream music to any room in the house via the wi-fi network by wireless connection to an Airport Express connected to an amp or powered speakers. And this can be controlled, also through the wi-fi network, by the Remote application available for the iPhone/iPod Touch. So basically your music library can be broadcast to any room in your house without the need for your computer to be on. This also works for internet radio streaming from the Apple TV as well. (This needs to be set up first: In iTunes, go to your favorite radio station under Radio, drag it to a new playlist. Add as many radio stations you want to the playlist. Sync the new playlist with your Apple TV. On your Remote application, navigate to the new radio playlist you made. Select the stream you want to play and you're ready to go. The computer does not have to be on.) The Apple TV has become a music server for your local network. It serves both local music files and internet radio to any room in your house. And the iPhone/iPod Touch acts as a controller for this. The Airport Express is $99. Just another example of competition in action. Slim Devices may want to consider its own hard drive equipped Squeezebox with networking capabilities as a response. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55543 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Slim Devices' crocodile in the bathtub
Much as Slim Devices (Logitech) may want to ignore it, like the crocodile in the bathtub or the elephant in the room, the availability of third-party applications for the iPhone/iPod Touch, is game changing. It is a Black Swan event(from the book of the same name, which got its title from the story of Captain Cook unexpectantly finding a black swan in Australia, not previously known to exist - at least to the Old World). Logitech can embrace this new reality for a symbiotic relationship. Sonos embraced it in releasing a free app. Ipeng (and Squidgy, et al.) are doing the same for the Logitech products. Logitech should look at the Slim Devices Controller as an inducement to incentivize sales of the Squeezebox and Boom and Duet, not necessarily as a profit center in itself. In light of the new alternatives, the pricing structure of the Controller and Receiver should be changed. An iPod Touch is $229. plus $10. for iPeng. The sum of those is less than the current price of a Controller. How about $150. for the Controller and $225. for the Receiver? Once you get the price of the Controller down, the perceived value added from the lower price (from the consumer's point of view) will hopefully produce higher profits through a higher volume of sales, not a higher mark up on each Controller sold. And more Controller sales will in turn drive further sales of the other Slim Device products. And lowering the price of the Controller would justify raising the price of the Receiver. And since there will be times when your computer is off (hopefully a lot, to save the planet), a mobile version of the squeezenetwork website would also be very helpful to those with an iPhone/iPod Touch. The existing website is just too awkward to use now with the Apple products. This would also incentivize more sales of squeezeboxes and booms and receivers. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55543 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Slim Devices' crocodile in the bathtub
it seems from the reviews of the iPhone apps that a lot of current controller owners would now question whether they would have bought a controller given the cost of that versus a iPhone/iTouch with an app. Exactly. All I am saying is that unless Logitech rethinks its pricing of the Controller, its going to lose a lot of sales. The late Otto Kaus, California Supreme Court Justice from 1980-1985, coined the metaphor of crocodiles in the bathtub to describe a judges predicament of deciding controversial cases while facing re-election: [I]t was like finding a crocodile in your bathtub when you go to shave in the morning. You know its there, and you try not to think about it, but its hard to think about much else while youre shaving. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55543 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
