when I go into Player Settings/Audio
Volume Adjustment / Replay Gain

I am offered 3 possible settings for RG
1) Track
2) Album
3) Smart

If I am setting up a carefully constructed playlist (a mix of tracks)
and I don't think I would hardly ever have a consecutive track playing
from the same album, which of the above 3 settings should I choose then
?

Are you saying it does not matter, Track and Smart are the same ?

I did mention in message 10, that I did not have to worry about this in
the end, as to my big surprise the JBL Eon 15 G2 speakers that we hired
had two 1/4" input jacks and two-band equalization. This would normally
allow a live double act to reinforce vocals and instruments without an
external mixer, but going from the SB Receiver to the JBL the onboard
mixer inside the JBL took care of it !

I did do some tests with a cable that combined the stereo into one mono
(both left and right channels combined) and it also worked fine, a lot
of worry about nothing I guess, but it needed testing to be sure :-)

thanks, that was good advice, I used "Smart Gain", even though some
advocate to use "Track Gain"

You have to set your SqueezeBox players to use the RG tags.
I did this by simply going to the SBS gui
SBS > Settings > Player > Audio page
Looked for the "Volume Adjustment/Replay Gain" line
Changed this value to "Smart Gain", and clicked "Apply".

nb I had to do this for all ten players, but it sounded pretty much OK
all through the party, so it was worth doing this I think.

Phil Leigh;657848 Wrote:

2 reasons, one because we can, a fast ethernet network should be able
to handle this, no other users or computers, just my iPad, and 10
receivers, if SBS cannot handle it, then I reckon SBS has much bigger
problems with the whole architecture of how it's been coded in the
first place,

and two because the 1gb USB drive he has given me to look at is chock
full of wav files, a lot these are old vinyl LP's that have been ripped
to a hard drive using the clever little USB PhonoPlus

http://solodeals.com/USB-PhonoPlus-V2-ARTcessory/M/B000BBGCCI.htm

and all the cracks, pops and noise removed, along with replaygain etc
using Audacity software, apparently is was a labour of love that took
him over a year to do 500 albums.

Audacity seems pretty nice software for that sort of thing, I did a few
compilation albums for the car today using it, simples :-)

Select a wav file, then go to
Project/Import Audio Import the rest of the wav files as a batch.
Edit/Select/All
Effect/Normalize
File/Export Multiple

I have now bought one of these USB PhonoPlus jobbies to rip some of my
old vinyl, but I don't think I will be taking as much care, just nice
to have them on the NAS for a rainy day :-)

I tested this out with a plug from Maplins that I bought today

[slim] Big Party

2011-09-12 Thread pcourtney

I have been asked to help provide the music at a wedding this weekend,
and this will involve about ten receivers (SB Duets) , luckily I can
use ethernet that is already in place in every main room, and I can run
some more Cat5 where I need it, I have my own 24 port switch that will
act as the hub for the computer, so networking wise I am all set.

but I did a smaller party not so long ago and we had a pair of active
stereo speakers in every room, my feeling was that this was definitely
overkill because nobody could really listen to the music in the proper
stereo imaging sense whilst dancing and chatting away, after all it's
just a party :-)

So this time I want to put just one active speaker in every room, and
this will also cost 50% less in speaker hire fees for the night, but I
need to ask if I put a stereo to mono adapter on every duet receiver
will it be OK, I have tested it just now and it seems OK to my ears,
but is this simple fix the best way, or am I missing something ??

it is now Sir, three hours later, everyone is rocking like crazy, the
volume has gone up a few notches, and all the girls are dancing the
night away, whooo ha !

but this box of Corona beer in the corner also helps - party on :-)

this iPad app has survived the party, it is not perfect, but I can
really see the potential, it is a good starter for ten, and that bodes
well for people who then want extra bells & whistles to buy iPeng or
Squeezepad if they want, but for now well done Logitech - keep working
hard at it guys !

your right, it is my fault for not writing a 200 word introduction and
letting everyone know in advance that I was not looking for
alternatives to the free app, just wanting to give it a real life
scenario like tonight's party, so sorry for me being so stupid

By the way, you go away, I started this thread, what are you some
overlord on this forum or something, I am man enough to apologise to
your readership that I should have started off the thread with a full
introduction, so if you don't mind.

come on pippin, give the free app a little airplay for gods sake,
rather than pushing your app, this thread is not about iPeng or
Squeezepad, get it !

Re: [slim] Logitech Squeezebox Controller app on iPad

2011-09-03 Thread pcourtney

thanks for all the plugs for other iPad apps folks, I know about them
all for some time, so you are not really getting the point of the
exercise, which is to give this Logitech developed application a run
out - and what better conditions than a big party in London, so please
don't keep harping on about other ways to do this, I see all the apps
in the iTunes store, I am not some pathetic newbie who needs that sort
advice, it really is pathetic you guys !

the reason for the thread is to put the Logi iPad app through its
paces, do you think you can all PLEASE get your head around that, gee
whizz, people, it really does amaze me that you think you are making
some osrt of contribution to the thread by telling me to use something
else 2 hours into the party.

I am beginning to wonder why I bother even typing into this forum
sometimes...

[slim] Logitech Squeezebox Controller app on iPad

2011-09-03 Thread pcourtney

I have been using my iPad this last few hours to setup a "Random Mix" of
party music tonight, in fact the party kicked off 30 minutes ago :-)

Total Tracks: 786
Total Albums: 62
Total Artists: 62
Total Genres: 5
Total Party Playing Time: 57:40:09

You can setup the Random Mix by the following :

Song Mix
Album Mix
Artist Mix
Year Mix
Choose Genres

I have set it to "Song Mix" and it is very basic, it just takes the
first album and track 1, then second album, track 2, third album track
3, so yes it is random, but logical random, not all the over the place
random, no matter it is doing the job of a DJ better than me :-)

you can toggle between all the mixes and it works really well, but I
have left it at "Song Mix"

am only on the tenth track in and it takes over 10 or 20 seconds for
the cover art to appear on the iPad, and this is with the iPad 1 metre
away from the Netgear DG834GT router with a super strong signal, so the
fact that is takes so long for artwork to appear does not bode well !

also, a track finishes playing on the speakers, but it is still showing
20 to 30 seconds to go on the iPad, the new track starts playing on the
speakers, but the iPad is way behind refreshing with track info and
cover artwork, this is poor programming, as easy to spot this type of
lag I would have thought at the software quality control stage.

just a little bit of stuttering going on though, only at the beginning
of a track, and only 1 in 10 tunes, but watching it closely tonight

In its defence, all the Tag information is displayable and works super,
these are WAV files as well, so just by clicking on the Artist name
above the artwork gives you all the Album info, and "Show Artwork"
brings you back to the player

"More Info" brings up the track number, file format, Duration,
Bitrate 1411 CBR, Sample Rate 44.1 kHz, Sample Size 16 bits,
Tag Version ID3v2.3.0 and View Tags

"View Tags" brings up APIC,COMM, TALB,TCON, TDRC, TIT2, TPE1, TPE2,
TRCK etc

yep, all seems to be there, well its going to be a long night, but this
will be a stern test for the iPad, the 4 SBR's, the SBS server, and I
cannot say I am very confident, but it does have potential if Logitech
could be bothered to really put it all together one day, maybe !

Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2011-08-28 Thread pcourtney

I don't think he wants his computer running SBS anymore, he just wants
to configure the Duet using UDAP, and not have the laptop on, which I
don't know if that can be done, at least it's easy for him to have a
try with UDAP, and see if it works.

if it does not work, and a much better solution, would be to have SBS
running on a SheevaPlug, you can pick them up for less than £100
pounds

Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2011-08-27 Thread pcourtney

the mysqueezebox.com domain is hosted by Amazon Data Services in Dublin,
the IP address for the website/service/domain is 79.125.18.68

I had a quick look at the UDAP fields for you, and it might be possible
to use the field "IP address of either Squeezenetwork or local server"

Squeezenetwork was the name before mysqueezebox.com came along !

server_address:79.125.18.68

UDAP> fields
lan_gateway: IP address of default network gateway, (e.g. 192.168.1.1)
lan_network_address: IP address of device, (e.g. 192.168.1.10)
lan_subnet_mask: Subnet mask of local network, (e.g. 255.255.255.0)
primary_dns: IP address of primary DNS server
secondary_dns: IP address of secondary DNS server
server_address: IP address of either Squeezenetwork or local server
squeezecenter_address: IP address of local Squeezecenter server
squeezecenter_name: Name of local Squeezecenter server

but there are better informed people than myself who may give you more
sound advice, but it is worth a try, given how easy it is to use Robins
utility, try it out, try various settings out, always safe in the
knowledge that you can reset all the fields back to your current config
:-)
