I'm a college student right now and work at Best Buy. I get an
excellent accommodation through Logitech as a Best Buy employee and the
price of a Duet and SB3 (off of, say, eBay) is about equal. After
browsing the forums for the last couple days, I've noticed most people
have the SB3 despite the fact it is significantly older. Is there a
good reason for this? I'm not really worried about the DAC as my preamp
has a very good built in DAC that I will be using anyway. I sit about 10
feet from my stereo so I really don't need to have a screen on the
remote, but it would be cool I'll admit. I also don't really have any
need right now for Internet music streaming, so I don't mind if that
functionality it not present. What is the communities general opinion
 on this?

Or, should I wait for the Touch (ha)?

If you're going to use an external DAC then it probably doesn't matter
which one you go with. The only other differences would be the display
on the SB3, and also you can control other devices with an SB3 using an
IR Blaster.

Both have identical functionality as far as Internet streaming goes, as
that's actually handled by the server software.

I usually just browse by Music Folder if I want to listen to something

 Very severe rebuffering

Plugging the Netgear directly into the wall solved the problem
Probably the instability of the outlet caused electrical surges that in
turn caused some frames to be lost. I should add that a proper protocol
error management should avoid this. Apparently whenever a single frame
was lost the whole rebuffering thing started
Anyhow, it is now fixed and hopefully will help someone else

I've been using Linksys Powerline AV adapters on three of my
Squeezeboxes (because of wi-fi deadspots in the house) and they've been
working great. Linksys states specifically in the manual to plug them
directly into a wall outlet and not into a power strip or surge
protector.

Re: [slim] SB3 Antenna???

I have heard a lot of people get VERY slow throughput on these,
depending on the quality of your house wiring, and how clean your power
is. Could all be bunk, but I've seen few people be satisfied. I
considered this option, but it was more expensive than what ended up
working for me, and all those low throughput comments planted the seed
of doubt in my mind. If it works, it's a great option though - since it
has the power (see what I did there) to extend your network everywhere.

Using the Squeezecenter Server Network Health test I get a solid 100%
@2500kbps on the SB3s that are attached to the Powerline AV adapters. At
3000kbps it drops off to 95%. This is identical to what I get when I
test my hardwired SB3. In any case the throughput has been good enough
to stream FLACs to multiple SB3s throughout the house without any
drop-outs, which wasn't the case with wi-fi.

I don't have any info on the single-phase vs multi-phase home wiring
issue. FWIW I'm located in the northeast US and live in a 15 year old
house. Your mileage may vary.

I just recently switched from DSL to cable and the Apple Extreme router
is now farther away. My Transporter is great (it works great regardless
of where the router is in the house) but the two SB3's always seem to
struggle with picking up a strong enough signal. Are there any simple
solutions to increase the range of the SB3's?

I have a Squeezebox in a bedroom which is in the opposite corner of the
house and one floor up from the wireless router and its wi-fi reception
was always spotty. I tried a high-gain antenna on the router: no
improvement. I added another wireless access point in the second floor
office, which is one room away: no improvement.

I finally bought a couple of these things:

http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-PLK200-Powerline-Ethernet-Adapter/dp/B000LJ5B8Q/

You plug one in near the router and then run a CAT 5 cable from it to
the router, then plug the other one in near the Squeezebox and run
another CAT 5 cable from it to the Squeezebox (you configure the
SqueezeBox same way you would if it was hardwired.) The Powerline
adapters communicate with each other though the house's electrical
wiring and bridge the traffic to your router. Works great. I ended up
buying a third one to use with the Squeezebox in the basement.

On the SB3 navigating to Now Playing and pressing the + key on the

if there's a similar shortcut method using the Controller.
