[slim] SB3 Display Dead / Dying - anything to check?
I have a Classic where the VFD suddenly died - POSSIBLY (probably) kid related. It was likely knocked, and the display was fine on one end, and blurred to nothingness to the other end, and then completely dead the next day. Works great otherwise - glad it's programmed for the network already!! I also picked up one from eBay (need a spare, right?), and it looked great for a few minutes, and then checked it and about 1/3 of the display (top) is dead. Major sadface. :-(. Re: [slim] Where to buy? Repair?
Confirmed: I got a Raspberry Pi (was wonder what to do with it), used Raspian, and followed this Blog (http://dabdig.blogspot.com/2012/05/running-squeezeslave-on-raspberry-pi.html) - works great. And yes, it runs Pandora if you set the Mac address to the requested range (use the -m option or just put it in the /etc/init.d/squeezeslave file - it's pretty obvious where to put it in the file) of 00:04:20:00:00:01. Since Analog pops, I plan on getting a USB audio adapter (http://www.amazon.com/Syba-SD-CM-UAUD-Adapter-C-Media-Chipset/dp/B001MSS6CS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8qid=1351630684sr=8-1keywords=c+media+usb+headphone+set). There are many HDMI - RCA adapters, but they're in the $30 range, so for $7, this is worth a shot. It's not a classic, but it's doable. Picking up a receiver from eBay might be a better idea, since they're self contained, have WIFI, etc... fun experiment though. [slim] Transcode MP3 Stream to MP3?
I've got a problematic stream, as documented here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78826 I can't figure it out - I've tried. What I'd like to try is to force convert the problematic stream to a higher-bitrate stream (64k, 128k, etc) that I know the squeezeboxes like. I've looked at this file *convert.conf* and want to create a *custom_convert.conf* file, but am a bit confused by this passage: # special case for smart bitrates on mp3 input mp3 mp3 transcode * # IFB:{BITRATE=-B %B}D:{RESAMPLE=--resample %D} [lame] --silent -q $QUALITY$ -v $BITRATE$ $RESAMPLE$ --mp3input $FILE$ - ... # This example transcodes MP3s to MP3s, if the target machine has the # given MAC address. This rule will take precedence over the # previous rule because it's more specific. #mp3 mp3 squeezebox 00:02:dd:34:e9:62 # ./brute_filter $FILE$ - I'm not sure how to deal with this. Any help -- thanks! Ideally, I'd like to take any .mp3 stream that's in certain paramenters (64kbit or 44.1 kHz) and transcode them to 128kbit 44.1 kHz streams, or something to that like. I've tried this, but it marks both MP3 and FLAC as Disabled, and greyed out - can't select it. I've even commented out the native mp3 mp3 * * in convert.conf, and it doesn't work. This is weird - I know there's a few Oregonians here that listen to OPB.org's (NPR) station. I have 2 squeezeboxes - an SB2, and a Touch - synced. Using the latest 7.5.1 nightly, and latest 7.5.1 on the Touch. The link is this: http://www.opb.org/programs/streams/opb-radio.pls 1. If I play local music, it plays perfectly (in sync, no rebuffing) 2. If I play Pandora, it plays perfectly. 3. If I play net radio (Radio Paradise), again, perfect. 4. If I play OPB.org, on 1 squeezebox, it plays perfectly. ** 5. If I play OPB.org, on 2 synced squeezeboxes, it plays the promo item (10 secs), ~12 seconds of feed, and then oscillates between 0-4-8% rebuffering. ** I've tried using Proxied and Direct streaming settings, I use The Syncronizer plugin, I've messed with Sync settings, but nothing helps. ** HELP! ** (Yes, it could very well be an OPB.org problem, as they do funky things to the stream possibly, but then why would it work pefrectly on ONE squeezebox?) -Dan -- plympton plympton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78826 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store
I've been working with iPeng for the last day, and here's a tip for those with Jailbroken iPhones/iPods. If you get Backgrounder from the Cydia repository, send iPeng into the background, and when you go to it every time, it won't have the startup delay that you have when you run iPeng - no re-caching, syncing, etc. It also won't kill your battery overnight (tested) - Backgrounder doesn't affect sleep/locking, it just runs the application in the background while you are using the iPhone. It might cause more drain while you use other applications (Wi-Fi), and also might cause problems when you leave the house (haven't tested, lose connection), but it works well for me. I'm looking for a double-tap replacement, so I can call iPeng from the lock/home screen, but haven't found anything. Best I found is a triple-tap to unlock hack, but that's not really that great. -Dan -- plympton plympton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55514 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Streaming dropouts with Zune!
Hey all, I got a Zune 80 for Christmas, and it seems like Microsofts ugly software is causing problems - whenever it downloads Podcasts, it takes all the network bandwidth. I can't schedule the downloads, so they happen whenever.. and it's causing the WAF of my SB to go down... down... down... My Zune is connected to my HTPC, which is also my Slimserver. It's not a CPU issue, it's purely a network priority issue - it's taking all my 1.5 MBit connection to download the podcast, causing Pandora et al to stop dead. I turned on QoS on my router, I added highest priority to the SB3's MAC address, and it's still happening. I increased the buffer amount on the SB3, but I don't think that will help. If I give priority to the Slimserver, it will also give prioirty to the Zune since they share the same MAC address (same machine). I don't know what the Zune downloads over, but I assume it's port 80... hmm.. what port does Pandora or Internet Radio use to stream - can I set that packet to a high priority... ? Is there a way to speed-limit (like on uTorrent - you can throttle download speeds) programs like the Zune application so it's not so much a network hog? I looked into converting it to Flash, but that learning curve for Actionscript/Flex was too big for me at the moment - and it wouldn't work on the iPod/iPhone... Here's something I couldn't find in the archives - is bandwidth still being consumed even when a streaming radio station is paused? Some streams can be relatively large, for a DSL connection, and there are times I might want to have my full-bandwidth for whatever reason (or just not have the extra traffic). It seems that streaming stations update their display while paused (current song on Radio Paradise, etc...) and there doesn't seem to be a rebuffering... pause as if it needs to fetch new data. Finding one of these used would be sweet! :-) -Dan -- plympton plympton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38042 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

At least they seem cooler. Even those mega dollar solutions reduce the signal to noise ratio. Plus, the SqueezeBox doesn't claim to be an audiophile product, Yeah, the harmony remotes have tempted me when I (briefly) had a LCD HDTV (hated it). When I get my Plasma, though ! I just thought all the talk of Burr-Brown this and the VFD that implied it was a cut above the regular consumer junk out there (it is). Re: [slim] Looking for help with Nokia 770 and Moose
Also of note is that Remote Desktop alters the main display - if you're running Windows MCE and using your MCE machine as a slimserver, you have to choose between running Slimserver/Moose combination your MCE display. When you log into rdesktop, it will stop movies playing (I think). It's really nasty. A different solution is to use VNC, but again, with Windows not having different login capability, you lose that. ANOTHER solution would be to run Slimserver/Moose in a virtual machine, thus having its own desktop, memory space, etc. You could use the free VMware server to do this (I run my webserver virtually this way on a Linux box). -Dan -- plympton plympton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37994 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Cheap D/A?
I know, this isn't the group to ask this, but I will anyway. :-) There's a TON of threads on high-end replacement D/A converters, but are there any - similar to a DVD player's D/A that will convert the Coax or Toslink connections to standard 2-channel stereo inputs? I essentially want to have 2 SB outputs - 1 variable volume Analog and one fixed volume Analog. Yeah, at times I wish the name was still SlimDevices. The simple answer to why no buttons is because its a slim device Well, I hate to say this, but then they should have done what Tivo did - make the volume keys programmable (and the power key) so that it could control the receiver directly. Otherwise, by having the volume keys on there, they're saying that volume control is INTEGRAL to the design of the device, and important, therefore it should be a function of the device. Take a gander at, The Design of Everyday Things. The jist is that a device that outputs should have control of the output on the device, not (just) on an another device. Since there's no stop function (per-se) on the Squeezebox, it just makes sense to have Volume+/-/Mute/Off somewhere on the device. Can't really have it both ways, unfortunately. And yes, I could (and probably will, sigh) rejigger my stereo so that the receiver's volume knob is more accessible, but that's like plopping an ugly old couch in front of a Morris chair, and then showing off your new Morris chair getting funny looks. Anyway, my Altec Lansing InMotion InMini iPod speakers are a very similar design to the SqueezeBox, and there's an imperceptable volume slider on the top that really adds to the value of the design, IMNSHO. :-) And that was all of $10 on sale. I certainly don't think it raised the price of the unit much. Ultimately, you should probably be able to dock the remote so that you have the choice of device controls -or- remote controls, but that's a design exercise for later -Dan -- plympton plympton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37980 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The TiVo is not close to a slim device. It has a full blown Linux OS in it. Different philosophy. Its got a hard disk and all sorts of stuff. ... Perhaps, but again, I never touch mine. I've got three SqueezeBoxes and a Transporter. I was just referring to the Tivo REMOTE - not the box (although they have no buttons, too). The REMOTE can be programmed to raise/lower the TV volume, mute, and power (tv amp) - no need for IR blasters. If the SD remote is so useful, and so audiphile friendly, they should have done the same thing - make it so that the cool remote does all the cool things *AND* I don't have to find the remote to crank up the tunes on my Denon/Sony/Whatever receiver. Kinda conflicting story in that the only way to use the included remote for the stereophile device is to lossy-ly lower the volume using the DAC, no? (that's what I read it's doing) That, or use an IR blaster (kludge) or have 2 remotes around (dumb) or buy yet another remote (OK, you can argue Audiophiles will have a universal remote.. though the audiophiles I know hate all remotes have tubes in the house, etc..) (yes, I know they were a startup, and the SliMP3 used a Sony remote, etc... but this is today) Ultimately, the SqueezeBox should be built into your Receiver or amp. Agreed - that would be great! -Dan -- plympton plympton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37980 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Independent Volume Control?
Hey all, I'm getting my SB on Wednesday, but want to see if this is possible: I want to independently control the volume from the headphone and RCA outputs (rather, I want to fix one either output, and keep the other one fixed). This is because I'm sending one output to a small powered amp in the kitchen, and I'd like to control the volume independently. The problem is that I believe the remote will work on both outputs. :-/. Hmm... Any suggestions? Are the 2 outputs physically tied together so that this isn't even possible? -Dan -- plympton plympton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37978 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Well, while that's a bummer, at least it's pretty logical in the reasoning! I'm coming off a few years with Rio Receivers, and while the dev community ALMOST got it right, it kinda died a while back. I'll certainly miss being able to walk up to them and just turn the volume up, but I'm sure that's a rant for another posting... -Dan -- plympton plympton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37978 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Why no buttons?
OK, so I'm sure this HAS to have been hashed out somehwere, but I'll ask anyway. I'm coming from using Rio Receivers - great boxes, bad software, dead development. One thing that was REALLY nice was being able to walk up to them and turn down the volume. Nice. Easy. No, Where is the remote, which button was it So, WHY does the Squeezebox NOT have a volume knob again? (besides audiophile gripes, aesthetics, philosophical mantra, etc..) Oh, and the volume knob doubles as a scroll knob, too. Has anyone ever made a keypad kinda thing? I'm seriously half temped to buy a crappy small universal remote and gluing it to the front panel some how! :-) Also, is there any way to get dynanmic playlists on this? I'd like to save a list of 2 genres (alternative folk), but am I correct in thinking that a random play off these lists would go like: -Browse - Genre - Alternative (play) (playing random from Genre) -back -Folk - Play (adding random from Genre to playlist?) Go to Now Playing - Right to save - Save to favorites Now that it's saved, wouldn't it be a static list? Honestly, I'm picking this up for Pandora a server that doesn't crash (Javaugh). But it feels like I'm entering a world of lots-o-clicks! -Dan -- plympton plympton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37980 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I've been experimenting with Softsqueeze and my Rios running SlimRio, and the sync can be dead-on to several seconds off. Not cool. That's the whole reason why I'm doing this (I have a Rio in the living room and Kitchen where they ARE synced, but the server crashes randomly... ugh). So I'm converting the Cat-5 to an analog Audio run, and picking up a Sonic Impact 5066 amp to drive the speakers with a good old-fashioned volume knob on it. :-) I was quite suprised how good it sounds running through all those electrical cables in the basement, etc. -Dan -- plympton plympton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37978 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
