Re: [slim] How does Apple AirPlay compare to SqueezeBox in functionality?
The thing that's really missing for me in AirPlay solutions is how I use mine as a bedroom system, the duet is perfect for me because the controller can be used for basic functions like volume control, play/pause and track skip without looking at it. I'm mostly an Apple household but if I'm reading before I go to sleep and something on shuffle I don't want to hear comes on the scenario of unlocking my phone, switching apps and then being able to do those basic operations is unacceptable. There's some stuff that doesn't look that bad like the new Denon Ceol Piccolo that has an IR remote but the alarm functionality seems to only work with local sources and not AirPlay. qirex's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1536 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96726 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?
The one thing I don't like about Sonos and most AirPlay-based solutions is the lack of a dedicated controller, when my alarm goes off in the morning and I want to skip a song and turn the volume down a bit the idea of unlocking my phone, switching apps, etc. just becomes incredibly unappealing. I'd probably be happy to purchase a UE-branded player that came with a remote but Logitech isn't going to pre-announce anything and I'd imagine that further products in the line depend on the success of what they're releasing now. It would also help if Apple wasn't so picky about what they allowed Airplay-compatible systems to do. qirex's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1536 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96191 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Good Squeezebox alternative?
The use case for me that nobody but logitech seems to care about is the bedroom stereo. When my alarm goes off I don't want to have to pick up my phone, make sure it's connected to wi-fi and in the right app just to be able to adjust the volume or skip a track. I've actually been thinking about getting another duet as backup in case this one dies because it's the exact setup I want. -- qirex qirex's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1536 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91090 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] I officially declare my HATE for 7.4...
honestly I think the biggest problem is that Logitech sent out an email announcing it the instant it was available. Having dealt with .0 releases before I assumed they'd done something different as far as testing and upgraded right away. Fortunately factory resetting my SBC fixed most of my problems but it took me a while to figure that out. Basically they should have a) waited a while to see if there were any game-breakers before sending a marketing email to everybody and b) informed existing users about the upcoming major changes better. From the email I was just expecting they'd renamed Squeezenetwork and shoehorned some apps in somewhere for buzzword compliance. -- qirex qirex's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1536 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69945 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

OK this is weird. I had one [SB2] that I had unplugged when I was out of town last week for Christmas and upon returning I plugged it back in and 24 hours later it died in exactly the same fashion. Even if the brightness is turned off, even that will turn on for about 15 seconds - this really spooked me the first time it happened. The filters on the phone lines don't help - I tried several brands. 2nd, make sure the volume of your stereo is turned all the way down so the music won't wake you. 3rd, this flaw makes the SB useless as an alarm clock, because of the false alarms. Lastly, you're incorrect when you say no ports open to the outside world, since your constant on net access is open to the outside world. I don't have DSL, I have a cable modem. I don't even have a land line. Also I have my firewall configured very carefully and there are no open inbound ports on my home connection open. This has happened over both wired and wireless connections. This problem is becoming increasingly frustrating, it happened again twice last night and there hasn't been a single solution proposed. Re: [slim] For the $2000 Transporter, are Slim Devices serious about the user interface?
UI design is a tricky thing, especially when you're trying to create a flexible solution for different kinds of users. Fortunately SlimServer is a pretty flexible product. I don't see a native Windows/Mac/*NIX front end being that useful honestly, you can get most of the functionality and live interaction feel out of a web browser nowadays without having to deal with all of the technical hurdles. I can see a lot of ways to make pretty big improvements without compromising the experience for existing users. [slim] Re: New Slim Devices Product? The Transporter per 6moons.com??
Honestly I'm glad to see this if only because it will help move digital audio into a realm that has snubbed it for years. I honestly believe that the Squeezebox has the sound quality of a real audiophile device but there are people in the world who turn up their noses at anything [even cables] costing under a grand. I'm also glad to see it for the health of Slim Devices as a company, I think this could do pretty well and while I'll avoid snarky comments about it I imagine the margins on the Transporter are a great deal deal better than the Squeezebox [probably greater than the Squeezebox's retail price]. And if unit sales get good maybe we'll see some trickle down of features like the knob and buttons to the low end model.
