Re: [slim] Uh Oh
Hha ha had also just seen the El Reg comment... Perhaps its time to start reverse enginerring the squeezebox and firmware. Cant be that radically difficult... ;-) However firmware updates would probably result in devices phoning home to Redmond to report on the latest listening habits, which can be forwarded to your hotmail advertising based account, and influence the Live! search results. Then again Microsoft just tried to patent the concept of controlling wish lists... http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/03/microsoft_patents_wish_list/ Perhaps Duet will evolve into HAL 9000 to serve all your needs Dave. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/03/microsoft_hopes_to_patent_big_brother/ Unfortunately share holders, especially for high tech companies, tend to be rather big hedge funds for whom cash counts and not morals. Dont know about Logitech though. Enough rumour mongering... lets hope sanity prevails and this prooves just to be a nasty rumour... -- roamingstudio roamingstudio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6923 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42018 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] TS101 + Slimserver
In other words you have configured your PC as your slimserver; and have stored the files on the remote TS101. This is not actually they way to do it! The TS101 uses a PowerPC processor running linux. It uses a service called 'Samba' to allow the hard disk to be served to remote computers (like windows). To install SS on the TS101 you therefore need to install the PowerPC version of SS... and do a lot of other magic stuff. The quickest install package is provided by progressive AV - http://www.progressiveav.com/ts101_update/ 1. Update the firmware to a telnet enabled version (firmware number should end in a T) 2. Then install the SS packages - start with 6.3.1 then upgrade to later versions. Search this forum for further SS on TS101 instructions. -- roamingstudio roamingstudio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6923 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35693 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] How's this for a small SlimServer?
Small is beautiful. I have a nice Pentium M with 1GB ram running on a nano-sized form factor... these little beasts just get smaller and smaller. If you also know where to look you start finding some with raid SATA support. [slim] Re: Ethical question - stolen CDs backups......
Just a thought - always keep your crime # and all documentation to prove the CD's were stolen. RIAA would not have much of a leg then as you can prove you were the rightful owner- and still are- even though through no fault of your own (except open doors) you no longer possess them physically. I long since removed my CD's from the plastic case and used the 'cd sleeves' - takes up less bulk and removes the attraction of resell. Anyone on a market with just a CD and no covers / case would attract a certain amount of attention. I had a similar problem with a load of software CD's which were knicked. I had installed the software; and they were just in case of backups. The police basically advised that as long as I can install the software with the same licence number then it is not a problem. Although this was somewhat 'unofficial'. Fortunately I had kept a paper copy of all my CD-keys etc. -- roamingstudio roamingstudio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6923 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29003 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Buy a Squeezebox now or wait?
I made the decision that I would buy now - and maybe again in the future. I wanted another one which I could work with; modify etc safe in the bank. The future is bright - the future is orange. Sorry wrong brand - but you cannot predict what will happen - probably even SD et al dont rightly know. The transporter is a definite buy now, may not be able to again. But I suspect SB's will be around in some form or another for a long time yet; just not necessarily with the current level of loving care and attention in the development and assembly. It could be even more loving care and attention in which case I would buy another... If Logitech step in and make lots of changes, if there is a cheaper SB3 v2 coming out, if they rebrand the boxes and hardware, I would be suprised to see it hit the general market / distributors before end november. Logitech may still try a hard sell for Christmas - but even then there is probably not enough stock available for demand. I suspect things will really change (if they are going to change) sometime in the new year. -- roamingstudio roamingstudio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6923 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28952 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Squeezebox is often a fun term for an accordian and accordians can be small or large when inflated buy logical air... s... [slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!
Most people dont like the idea of a small independant company with a good track record being taken over by a large multi-national; always fearing (often rightly) that product quality, support takes a nose dive. This may happen even now - we can hope not and that certainly over the next year or so hope that the support / intervention in the design process is not too severe. In the long run it would be good to have devices which can be modified using a relatively open hardware platform - and that Slim-Logitech-Devices allow this to occur. One possability would be to use modular designs - if they downgrade the DAQ chip / circuit then use a standard layout so that others can easily interchange the circuit - e.g. something like a small mini-pci type / memory connector to bridge to a new board. Similarly I would hope SLD were open to listing basic product specifications. Often it is the user community which can find, spot and possibly fix a bug / fault before a large corporate group can. Perhaps there could be a mass market for a SB-Lite; SB-Pro; Transporter. In the meantime I hope that the SB / Transporter range continues unchanged and reliable. -- roamingstudio roamingstudio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6923 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28821 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!
Sean You mentioned NAS support - well it would seem a logical development to have a NAS branded device (even with the recent tie-ups). If you / logitech / infrant do end up on the NAS route please *please* PLEASE do not lock the system down and allow it to be configurable. Decent NAS blocks which are quiet, low power usage and slim (e.g. Synology / QNAP) are the ideal future - unless you manage to make a transporter clone with inbuilt copper pipes for passive HDD cooling. Now that would be nice! (it is also a mini project of mine). -- roamingstudio roamingstudio's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6923 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28821 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Check out the 3rd Party Hardware threads for QNAP stuff. [slim] Re: Slimserver 6.5 MySQL Requirement - Bad!
If you read through the 3rd Party stuff there are quite a few threads showing that some of the NAS (network attached storage) devices are taking a huge hit in performance with 6.5.x This could well be due to the need for MySQL (or not - ive not had time to read the SS source code). However an option to keep the old database format would possibly be good for these groups of people - if it works; dont fix it. If you need improved performance then the path is probably to have a custom mini-itx / PC based system; in which case MySQL is not a problem.
