[slim] Slim server keep restarting

2006-11-11 Thread thoeng

Hi all,

i have a problem with "keep restarting" SB. At first i didn't notice it
but now it getting annonying. It restart "randomly" (probably after 2-3
songs) and then require me to re-connect to my wireless router. i
didn't have this problem until lately.

I tried to downgrade slimserver to 6.3.1 but the problem still occur. i
also don't think the problem is on the server as i tried to change
server from notebook to desktop :( . i think maybe electrical problem
(i used pretty extensive extension about 8 exts) as i don't have
problem before using same router nor software (version6.3.1 worked fine
for me before). But i tried to turn them off and problem still occur

MY Spec are 1.7 AMD, 512RAM, 160GB HD, wireless SB2, router WGT624.
Please advice. Cheers for the help

[slim] Re: Write down your slim box NOT NAS

actually the reason i want to do it wireless is because i was thinking
if i am able to get those nice sweetlooking mini ATX box then why to
put them on clothes rack i will put it just beside my SB. and to do
this i will have to do it wirelessly because the router it self is on
the other side of wall and if i am to do wire then i will have to hide
my slimbox (because it won't look good and fit good) as i already hide
my router (netgear WGT 624T) behind drawer.

Well somebody teach me how to put pictures i would love to post me
pictures here !!

[slim] Re: Write down your slim box NOT NAS

2006-08-11 Thread thoeng

woww thank for the response folks what a great forum. anyway as for me
priority goes like this noise, cost effective, , electric efficiency,
processing power, and then heat since i have no other else to put the
system (i am cheap guy and living single studio), i also rescan less,
my music collection is less than 7500 songs, i want something small and
good looking and of course very low noise.

my ideal system is like this
http://cgi.ebay.com/Mini-Media-Center-PC-XP-Pro-DVDRW-Wireless-LAN_W0QQitemZ270016717599QQihZ017QQcategoryZ80193QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

ideally with wi-fi cards so i could put them inside my clothes rack
nicely and forgot them :) what do you guys think ??

okay so be it. i thought this thread might be useful for those who is
trying to build small & silent server like me. Folks, write down your
slimbox detail specification or even picture is better. you could
practically write down anything including placement, cases, how do you
overcome noises, heat and energy efficiency.

[slim] Re: My recipe for a cheap Slimserver

2006-08-05 Thread thoeng

IC thank you very much for the response !!
so pick up those old box actually will be great solution for me great
cost saver. there is another 2 huddler for me which is the energy used
(NAS vs compact PC) and noise level (box will be put in my bedroom)

I would say the end system will be:
1GHz processor (just in case)
256 RAM
250GB harddrive
No CD ROM (to save energey and quiet factor also i will rip CDs with my
laptop)
minimum voltage PSU
motherboard with onboard vcard.

i believe with these system 2nd hand it would be almost nothing :D
i also will definitely cheack out pros and cons between Windows OS
(compact ver.) and ClarkConnect.
Also those guys who have dedicated slim box out there, how do you
control the box without monitor, keyboard, and mouse installed ? (i
really dont wanna physically touch the server to configure it
everytime) any recommendations ?

[slim] Re: My recipe for a cheap Slimserver

2006-08-04 Thread thoeng

Hi, as everyone else lately i have been thinking the same. Been
considering NAS VS standalone PC. but now i am leaning over PC as it
costs less, faster perfomance, and less effort (NAS requires hacking).

I am planning to get one of those old box as server (no idea how old is
the spec perhaps PIII ? 256 RAM ?) any suggestion guys ? the server will
be used only for store music and video that i would access from my
laptop in the living room, and serve slimserver nothing other fancy
features.

i have seen those quiet and small PC form. it seems nice and might be
the solution. however i am wandering what OS to install (i have windows
xp tweaked edition with minimal driver installed (only 64RAM require) i
also have no exp of LINUX although it seems interesting to play with. I
only have small collection of MP3 perhaps around 30GB-50GB.

my question is will this plan work ? am i better with windows of LINUX
(requires me to learn) also how about monitor and keyboard? i hate to
place and old looking box with monitor in my bedroom. i was planning to
hide the box (forgetting the keyboard, monitor and mouse of course)
somewhere in my bedroom

Thanks guys for any solution
