I understand the need for attention if one were writing code or
developing products for distribution to others. And maybe that's your
interest. For simple use, however, boilerplate license terms seem
something unnecessary to even think about.

And have you ever truly understood those terms ? without an degree in
law ?
To compound these matters is this license agreement localized to where
i'm at ,usually this boiler plate eula is written for the US market and
might not apply in 100% to me.
Maybe logitech owns my soul, I have not read the fine print ?

Since you don't pay for the software you have little option anyway.

You have bought a Squeeze XYZ. It's either MySB.com or use the
software.

Exactly! Life is too short. Anyone read the fine print of every web
site or that of credit card terms?
One of the news programs here in the US did a story on the credit card
industry as a whole. Included was a segment on the terms conditions
of major credit cards.
Even lawyers had trouble determining and interpreting what these credit
card agreements actually meant.

Yes, I have read them, all of them. Yes I read license agreements. A
bit weird to some but it does explain my rights to the software, and
what I can do with it. It also explains Logitech's rights to the
software. It also tells me when your lawyers may call me and why.

Would it be possible to make the license agreement pop up during
installation?

[slim] Agree to invisible license terms?

2010-01-23 Thread dsdreamer

It seems to me that a new user of SBS is asked to agree to the license
terms before he may download the SBS software, but the only way to see
the license terms is to have first downloaded it (and thereby agreed to
the terms).

Is there some well-hidden link on http://www.mysqueezebox.com/download
that would let a user know what he is agreeing to?

That's why I am waiting to upgrade - I want to read the license. I got
a hold of support in November and they said they would have it was a
priority to get it fixed.

What priority I haven't figured out.

I wonder what they are trying to hide?

Would you feel better if you didn't have to read/confirm them? It's such a
stupid thing. I never actually read any of those terms... did you?

I wonder what they are trying to hide?

Nothing, really. It's just so useless, we should best get rid of it...

Re: [slim] Agree to invisible license terms?

2010-01-23 Thread dsdreamer

Much as I appreciate your free spirit, I think you're gonna have to put
the license terms somewhere prominent before the user commits the act of
installing the software.

The GPL2 calls for conspicuously and appropriately displaying an
appropriate copyright notice and disclaimer of warranty. Having to dig
around in the install directory for some text file may not qualify.

Someone should tell the folks at Debian that... since I don't get any
notice of licensing when apt-get installs something.

A 'click this to agree' on downloads is meaningless when you can
navigate to http://downloads.slimdevices.com/ and not get such a thing.

I guess it is a fair assumption that if you have root access at a Bash
shell prompt in Debian you already know what GPL is about and what
rights and responsibilities you have under it. You're in a fully
GNU/Linux environment after all.

But, you know, I really don't which way it gets fixed -- kill the
stupid button or put a link to the license terms -- either way is fine
with me.

What looks bad is that the first encounter a new user has with
SqueezeBox Server is being asked to agree to terms he may not see.
Basically, he must work around a Logitech bug before he even gets to
download the software!
