[slim] Can you permanently assign a drive letter in XP?

2007-05-03 Thread Kyle

I have two external drives on my laptop at work. If I disconnect them
and then reconnect them, sometimes the drive letters change, so my
music files aren't found. Is there a way to have my laptop recognize
each drive with the same letter each time? I've tried assigning drive
letters in the disk management section under administrative tools, but
it doesn't seem to be a permanent assignment.

Haven't ever used, but there are tools like eg.

Instead of drive letters you can map them to an empty folder if you're
using NTFS - that's what I do for my SB.

In Disk Management, in the properties of the drive in question, remove
the drive letter then add a mapping to your empty folder. Each drive
will need it's own but both could be sub-folders of a 'master' folder.

I've got several external hard drives. When I assign them drive letters
in XP's administrative tooks, they are permanent. I can disconnect and
reconnect them in any order, and each drive keeps its assigned letter.
I believe the key to getting this to work was to assign them letters
that were not in line to be automatically used by the OS. That is, I
assigned them as W:,U:,X: and not D:,E:,F:

Perhaps that's the trick. I'll give it a try. It's quite annoying to
have to rescan your music files because the drive letter has changed.
