Re: [slim] Duet compared to Squeezebox

also, what about SqueezeCenter?

I guess SlimServer is not developed anymore?

Should I move to SC even if I only have SB3s?
I would prefer to stick with SS, since I spent a lot of time to learn
how to install it on my Ubuntu box...

SqueezeCenter is SlimServer with a new name.

Should I move to SC even if I only have SB3s?

You'll have to if you want to use some of the newly supported services like
Rhapsody, Pandora, Slacker, SqueezeNetwork integration etc.

Installation on Ubuntu should be easier than ever. See the SqueezeCenter 7 on
Debian/Ubuntu Feisty section on

[slim] Duet compared to Squeezebox

2008-01-21 Thread gian

hello All,

I do not think I really understood what's behind Duet.

Is it just a different way to manage the music library, moving the
display from the receiver to the remote?

How does the sound compare?
Any improvements over dear old SB?
New features?

thanks for your time,
-Gian

I read on the web it's been backdoored by the NSA and checksums all
your files for comparison against a list illegal rips. Any hits get
reported to the RIAA used a 'stealth' protocol that can get through
firewalls. Of course, it could be just an urban myth.

The duet is two things, the receiver and the controller. The receiver
is basically an SB3 with no screen, pretty much everything else is the
same. The controller is however all new, and is best compared to the
Sonos remote - although it's better than that ;)

The analog output sounded about the same as an SB3 in a quick A/B on my
system, even though the SB3 had the advantage of a Cardas RCA that cost
10x as much as the one hooked to the Duet Receiver. They were close
enough that I can be confident I'd fail a blind test.

The digital output should be the same as the SB3, so if you're using a
digital AV receiver or external DAC there won't be a difference.

I can confirm this, I tested them both last week and couldn't hear any
difference, so I think the analogue circuits in the Receiver are pretty
close to the SB3.
I'm also pretty sure I wouldn't be able to hear any difference in a
real blind test.
