I've started a cause on Facebook about making Facebook revoke their
decision to limit a SqueezeBox to one Facebook account only!(hope this
is the right way to run a petition on Facebook?!).

Please join the cause here:

Re: [slim] Facebook App - what's the point?

2009-10-07 Thread thing-fish

Can apps be made player-specific instead of global for all players
connecting to a single mysqueezebox account? Or actually how about
this: I have three squeezeboxes in the house. Can each one of those
have separate mysqueezebox accounts (and thus separate app settings),
but still connect to one local server?

Speaking in the abstract regarding social networks, in a multi-member
household you're going to have multiple social network accounts. In my
house we have three FB users and two Flickr users, each with their own
set of contacts and shared items. While I think it would be lovely to
have multiple accounts on one player, I should at least be able to make
the player most often used by my wife display her Facebook and Flickr
stuff while the player most used by me displays my Facebook and Flickr
stuff.

Also regarding what's the point?, I second 'ddewey'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=467679postcount=17) and
his sentiment that if you're an active Facebook user then you like this
function and if you're not then it is of no use to you. Recognize that
FB has more than '300 million active users'
(http://www.facebook.com/press/info.php?statistics), and they are
accustomed to being able to interact with FB from all kinds of devices
from their phones to their XBoxes. It's a natural fit when you have a
display screen. Indeed even with my SB3, the first news feed in my
RSS screen saver is the status of my facebook friends. And note to
Andy: the second feed is my wife's friends and the third is my son's
friends.

Yes, on MySB.com each App is installed on any/all registered players.
But within each App's configure screen is a simple pull down menu next
to each player to Enable or Disable per player.

And imagine just one million Facebook users mentioning their Facebook
enabled SB Radio on their Facebook pages. Talk about free advertising!
:)

Rather than enable or disable a single-credentialed app what I'm
looking for is that each player could use the app with its own
credentials. The Last.fm Audioscrobbler is a perfect, already-existing
example of this within the Squeezebox sever: you *can* use one set of
credentials for all players, but you can also have each player scrobble
to a different account (which is what how we use it in my family)

That I don't know. Another alternative is to have a separate MySB
account for each player when each player is connected independently and
directly to MySB. Those players can still all connect to one instance
of SBS, but then any use of Music Services or scrobbling would be
associated with the MySB account as set forth in SBS Settings
MySB.com login info.

At least that's how I presume it would work. :)

That's really sad, although I don't see Facebook's problem if one
Squeezebox-player would be chained to just one account. This way e.g.
the bathroom SB Radio could be chained to my girlfriend's account and
the kitchen's SB Boom to mine. But having this limited to one account
only all my SB's can only be chained to one simple account... Not very
fancy at all :(

I'm sure Logitech is open for ideas how to make it better.

Add a feature that users can cange easy on the squeezecenterserver (i

important is to give access to a local picture libary... i do not wish
to upload pictures online.
As i do not see much sense in a facebook or flickerl inside a music
player.
Ok if there are interconection possibilites possible with a
multimediaplayer (for xample xtreamer - make a cooperation) or squeeze
is able to stream pictures to LCD orTV and make a reasonable Slideshow,
that you can use different LCDs like a photoframe... for different
places inside an appartment or the house - such can be some nice effect
but is the squeeze a musicplayer i first?
To sit on a chair 6 m away from the radio or the touch to see a picture
makes not much sense.
It makes sense to give some extra euros and to buy a Classic than a
receiver if you own a duet oruse SlimControl or Ipeng. I own a Duet but
i use Slimcontrol and the 2 Classic, because i can see and read the
Display from 6 m distance? I can not understand that Logitech cancel to
sell the classic in future. Is there a new young manager?

At the moment i see for PDA or Pocket PC as Partner TelGen. If i look
to their page i can read the following:

Please note that due to a decline in sales, TelCanto will no longer be
sold and supported after the end of 2009.

In a lot of things i get slowly confused.

If you view the entry the App makes on Facebook via the iPhone Facebook

you are playing music on your Logitech Squeezebox... and has a nice

Gimmicks and marketing and adding to the feature list. Just about
every electronic device I own has features I'll never use. But,
obviously, someone does use these features and many are drawn to devices
with long feature lists.

I've not messed with the Facebook feature, but I have had some fun
using the Flickr feature. Pick a subject and randomly see pics of that
subject. As for the music tie in, with two button presses Flickr will
display random images of the currently playing band/artist. See some
candid shots of obscure artists performing live, etc...

Gimmicky? Sure. Will many people use it? Probably. Will everyone
use it or care? No. Will Logitech up their sales of these units with
such gimmicky features? You bet! :)

The good thing is that these marketing gimmicks are well buried
features (must enable them) that will not intrude on anyone's enjoyment
of music for those that don't wish to be bothered with such added
features. :)

I just did post a comment inside the Rude thread.
I never saw before inside the Forum of Logitech that so much people
concern. But anways maybee because of language skills of mine i could
not see rude comments. There are more in my feeling concerns about the
direction. I hope Logitech managment take serious words with the
responsible managers and find a way to recognize the concerns because
these are exact the people that did help not less to make a good
product.

Maybee i hope they ask the old founder of slimdevices who did leave the
company not so long away about his opinion, what to do. If he speaks
serious inside the forums about his thinking the peacful way can go on.
Otherwize i see for a long time the community spreads into different
ways.
