Re: [slim] Hard drive died / proof of a higher power
I'm sure the last time I've tried this with success was a couple (not a dozen ;) years ago. Obviously if we're talking of a multi-TB drive, copying is so long there is less chance of complete recovery. 4 SB 3 iPeng (iPhone + iPad) Squeezebox Server 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld ShairTunes2 by disaster123 Local Player, BBC iPlayer by Triode Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104519 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Hard drive died / proof of a higher power
I dont think that the freezer trick still works on some newer drives anymore... That trick only works in the old days, where 160 GB drives were highend stuff. A drive (even if its cooled with dryice) gets hot to soon to get some data out of it. In the old days that wasnt a issuebut todays drives are bigger (capacity) and smaller (between the separate tracks and sectors) Gruss Jan DJanGo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1516 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104519 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It must have a worn out bearing. I have revived long enough drives suffering of this ailment by wrapping them in plastic bags and putting them in the fridge for a while. Until the drive reached normal temperature, I could mount it and backup data. In the most extreme case, I've had to keep the drive in the freezer while downloading from it... Obviously you have to be careful with what you're doing, electricity and condensation don't mix well, and putting a power source inside a fridge is a stupid idea. But, if you have no other choice, you can try to refrigerate your drive and, hopefully, get past Pink Martini ... 4 SB 3 iPeng (iPhone + iPad) Squeezebox Server 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld ShairTunes2 by disaster123 Local Player, BBC iPlayer by Triode Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104519 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Hard drive died / proof of a higher power
I could not make this up if I tried... I have a drive that is failing. I put it in an external enclosure to try to work out what can be recovered from it. Running a directory listing it got as far as: ./20070715/Pink Martini and then quit... Longtime followers will see the extreme irony in that. Maybe my homesick squeezeboxes have been playing it all along at night wearing a special groove right there in my drive. -Chris ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
