[slim] Harry Potter on Squeezebox

2011-02-08 Thread ovonrein

By popular demand, I ripped some audio books for my children the other
day. Some have an incredible number of tracks - total book > 500
tracks. I worked out that initially the books would not play to the
end because there's a limit on the playlist. I forget what it was -
seemed reasonable. Anyway, increasing this solved the problem.
However, even having this many files in the file tree turns out to be a
PITA. Tried to manages the tags and my tag editor took a DEEP BREATH
... and paused for a bit. So instead, I decided to rip by chapter, not
track. That's nice - only 40 odd files. Trouble is that my young ones
are complaining because the SB track navigation is a bit hit'n'miss.
Now, I read somewhere that someone's invented a new file format /
tagging system that allows one to mark points within a track? And then
navigate to those "soft points"? Does that ring a bell with anyone? Is
that something the SB will support? And if so, how do I go about it?

Thank you very much.

What do you mean by hit and miss? Properly encoded formats will be able
to seek perfectly to the point you select.

Is the OP referring to automatic bookmarking? I've never even
considered this with my Squeezeboxes so don't know whether it's an
existing feature, but I certainly remember it being a useful feature
(for these very same books) on my kids' MP3 players.

Re: [slim] Harry Potter on Squeezebox

2011-02-08 Thread ovonrein

@AndyG: Well, there are any number of challenges with that
implementaion:
(1) The over-loading of the track skip buttons (on the remote) with
the track pointer feature is unpleasant to work (if your (little)
finger jitters a bit, then you did not quite hold it down long enough
for the SB to understand that you want to place the track pointer, and
it will instead assume you wanted to skip). I think it used to be even
worse (when it would revert to skip as soon as you let go of the button)
- it seems better now (where it hangs around a bit in track pointer
mode). Still, feels clumsy (not that I'd have any great suggestions
for improvements, sorry).
(2) I still have no idea how to place a track pointer from the web
control panel, which might be easier to place.
(3) My kids simply forget which minute they had listened up to.
Coming back and trying to iterate towards a spot is just painful.

@Chill: Unfortunately, I do not recall where I read what little I
recollect. That's why I am throwing it out here, to see whether it
rings any bells with someone. I think it might have been a
successor/extension/enhancement to ID3? "Bookmarking" sounds
reasonable. How did your MP3 player work this?

The Bookmark plugin is also used by my girlfriend for her audiobooks -
it's possible to store up to 11 different bookmarked playlists with the
system - and if not already within Squeezebox Server it can be found
here http://kdfplugins.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/repo.xml

Yeah, I tried to follow that link but, franky, completely failed to
grasp what I was meant to do with the ZIP file. In the end, I worked
out that I could tick "Show all 3rd Party plugins" in SBS/Plugins and
there it showed up. I could then simply install by ticking, followed
by a restart of SBS. All good. Thanks again.

I still need help. I put the URL in to the additional repositories
line, but nothing happened. I have the "show 3rd party plugins"
checkbox checked and I even checked the box to update plugins
automatically. No files are showing up in my plugins folder. What am I
doing wrong?

Also, to make sure I knew how to add plugins correctly, I added
CDplayer. I got that to work successfully by listing the URL. How do I
add it to the menu as an option? Or do I have to remember the CDplayer
URL every time and type it in?

Re: [slim] Harry Potter on Squeezebox

2011-09-16 Thread ksqueeze

I'm making some progress. I have now managed to get the plugin listed as
enabled but now I don't know how to actually use it. I found this post
below on the forum. It says I'm supposed to pick bookmark on the menu
when a track is playing. Where should "bookmark" show up on the
Squeezebox for me to choose it?? Do I have to add it to a menu somehow
or should it be showing up on its own?

I feel like I'm getting there slowly but need a bit of assistance.
Thanks!

bookmark - how it works

Well I finally worked this out - not rocket science but I missed out
the vital idea because people use # to indicate number in USA etc but
not so much in Europe/UK.
So here is what I did
Added the bookmark plugin to the menu of my Squeezebox
Play a song/book
Select bookmark from the menu -
Now you have 2 options by scrolling up/down - save or restore
by using the Play button (think this ends up as position 0 (zero) but
not sure - or you can use the number pad to specifically save the
bookmark in a location 0-9, so save/restore via play or by a numeric.

Hope this helps

best

I'm guessing it's a right click from the Now Playing screen to the menu
where Bookmark pluginb should be.
