[slim] Help me getting a job. ;)

2009-03-24 Thread jaysung

Hello,
A friend of mine runs a business which is about hifi and home cinema.
He has a customer who has:
a 40 inch Sony tft display where he uses to watch movies.
A decent hifi system where he now listens to cds.
He will drop his cds all together and
He will buy a ripping station with SC7 on it and a transporter if:
He can sit back in his easy chair and
- browse album art (preferably in iphonish cover flow fashion on his
fancy tft screen in full size, select the album he wants and make the
transporter play it.
The ripping part of it is well solved. The device rips cds
automatically and even gets the so wanted album art in most cases.
We could add a computer running SC7 to the setup.
The thing I can not solve is:
How is the computer i.e the sc7 interface navigated in a way so that
the said customer does not need to care if he has a computer in his
hifi rack?
I am looking for something wireless. Perhaps something that even works
without opening a web browser?
Have looked at moose.
Any ideas?
Cause if I present a good solution my friend might consider asking me
an other time. ;))

I was working on a cover-flow-esque interface a while back that ran
full-screen on my TV (see image below)... but when the
Controller/SqueezePlay came out it kind of made it redundant (3D's cool
but not vital), so I stopped working on it. Full post 'here'

Your time would be better spent doing something about that wallpaper.

(joke, actually that 3d browser looks quite nice)

2009-03-24 Thread jaysung

Hello,
using a squeezebox controller would be an option but I wonder if the
display is big enough. I imagine a person who is perhaps a bit aged and
has trouble reading the display without his glases.
Haven't any clue about the real world user experience with the
controller (I am fully blind myself) but a 40 inch lcd is a different
story isn't it?
The tp costs about 2k bugs and the ripnas will go for an other 1k. So
money isn't an object as long as he's got the album art and a really
blowing user experience.
btw. How do you guys get album art? There is a feature in SC7.3?
Ripnas is claimed to do that as well but I read that it doesn't always
get the covers right.
Any hints on getting album art would be apreciated as well.
Thanks
PS.: Will take a look a ipeng. But it is an iphone's app isn't it? So
the display isn't any bigger?

It's 3.5", I believe, about twice the size of the controller's. You
want to use the iPod touch instead of the phone as a controller, of
course.

Size: Well, depends. Of course a 20" LCD is something else, but then
your are sitting further away from that one. Plus with a portable
device you don't have to sit in front of the screen.

Both the Controller and iPeng don't currently have something like
CoverFlow, yet, only fullscreen artwork on NowPlaying and small covers
on the albums lists.

SqueezeCenter won't get album art for you, you need to tag it yourself.
Personally I use MediaMonkey after ripping, others use tools that
automatically obtain album art while ripping (e.g. dBpoweramp).

Yep, it is dbpoweramp which is working in ripnas. So anyone about
dbpoweramp and it's reliability with covers?
What about an ipod touch? 3.5 inch screen ?
Could someone think about a convertible netbook with a touch screen?
Which skin would you use? Sleek, and quite simple not too much black
text one white screens?
Don't get me wrong. SC7 works OK for a blind person but is it sexy by
the looks?
How to dress the baby to enhance it's sex apeal?

OK, I'll have a go at this. Why pay big bucks for RipNAS? Don’t get me
wrong, it’s a great product in a small package but can get expensive
for large collections. How many CDs does the guy need to rip? If it’s
fewer than 3000 CDs, buy a suitable PC and install VortexBox on it (or
buy one from VortexBox all ready to go for $359). VortexBox runs SC and
does auto CD ripping. Buy a video output card for the Vortexbox PC that
matches the LCD input. Now SC is displayed on the big TV. Add a
wireless mouse and keyboard and the guy can do everything from his easy
chair in front of the big screen. If he has plenty of extra bucks he
could have two PCs, one running VortexBox and another running WHS or HP
Media Server to put the pics on the TV. If he has enough computer skills
to use dBpowerAmp on its own, then just go the WHS or HP Media Server
route adding SC and dBpowerAmp to the installed software. Many routes
to take here depending on skill level and how automatic it needs to
be.

As for album art with dBpowerAmp, it gets it right more times then not.
Everybody tends to have some CDs that don't match or can’t be found, for
those few all one needs is a scanner or AIO printer to put the cover art
in. The biggest issue I find is that most of the databases put the
latest release cover art in. So even though cover art was available for
most of my CDs, I had to scan in about 200 to match what I actually had
(which was a little over 1 percent). Sure the title and artist match
but it's not what I am used to seeing when I think of the album. Labels
being sold and the new label wanting to update the cover art and make it
their release cause most of these.

Re: [slim] Help me getting a job. ;)

2009-03-24 Thread jaysung

Well, basically the guy must have something REALLY exclusive. And if he
spends some money on it that really supports the feeling.
And ripnas was the first solution I found. Will take a look at
Vortexbox.
But ripnas is silent and can sit in the same room. Making cd ripping a
living room task which would increase to the selling points of the
whole system.
>
> depending on skill level and how automatic it needs to be.
>
It MUST be fully automatic and as I said the guy doesn't want to even
know that he is using a computer. Computers are work music is
relaxation.
Get the point?
Btw.: The Linngui works on a computer which could be connected to that
Sony display. What about a Linn DS?
Album art browsing? Has any one had the chance to compare sc7 to
linngui? It really should be straight forward and cost or brand or even
a multitude of features is largely irrelevant.
It has to simply work.
I like SC7 for it's possibility to be adapted to taste and because it
is open source based on standards like html/perl which makes things
quite accessible for me. But SC7 always has a taste of a hackerish sort
of feeling.

dBpoweramp gets probably 95 % of mine right. It might miss some of the
odd ones or maybe a different version than I was thinking of as you
have said. But then really all you need is google or wikipedia. Then
copy and paste in Mp3tag. Then extract from your tracks if you want a
copy of folder.jpg in the album folder.

Have you considered using a ripping service? Many of the comercial
services use dbPoweramp. This would allow your user to have his entire
collection ripped when the install of the hardware is complete. Instead
of sometime later after he has had the opportunity to feed all discs
into the RipNas.
