[slim] Help me put toghether HW and SW for my server!
Hi guys! I have an incredibly good setup, but I am considering getting everything digitalized and playing it via squeezebox. I have and old PC laying around and I am thinking of getting an intel Atom 330 CPU soldered on a motherboard with built-in graphics, along with a 1 TB disc to play my music, as I can get the cabinet for free. Will the perfomance be sufficient? Which SB would you recommend for the job? I have an Onkyo 5007 receiver with 32 bit BurrBrown DACs so I am thinking of feeding it digitally. AND last, but not least: What kind of free operating system would you recommend to run on the server? I want something easy to install, with good performance, running Squeezecenter and fairly easy to upgrade. The CPU is enough. Make sure you have enough RAM. If you can stick a gig on it, you will be very happy. > Which SB would you recommend for the job? My opinion is, if you have a friend using Debian or Ununtu, use that. If not, and you have a friend running something else, use that. If you have no friends, run Ubuntu desktop (not server), as there is tons of support in the Ubuntu forums. I would recomend a Duet or Classic, because of the Controller with it's display. So you havn't go to the receiver / Touch / to play arround. If you have no other use for the PC, use VortexBox. (I am not an employee.) Underneath it's RedHad Fedora but you don't need to know anything about that. I suggest checking out 'Vortexbox' (http://vortexbox.org/). Its free and runs a Linux OS. Ubuntu is another good OS choice and is free but doesn't include SBS 7.4 already installed, but one needs a little knowledge or learning of it. Vortexbox is basically hands off and will rip your CDs to FLAC by simply inserting them into the DVD drive. Using an old PC is fine, but I recommend a Gig of Ram as Pat does and put a newer DVD writer in for pass accurate rips plus eliminating problems with Vortexbox install. RIp to FLAC. Buy an SB3 or wait for a Touch especially if you want to do 24/96 files native. So check out the Vortexbox website and give it a try. Does Vortexbox utilize AccurateRip, or is it cross-your-fingers on-the-fly ripping? >From personal experience I can concur with Pat's recommendations on the OS. I have no friends (at least, not any with non-Windows OS knowledge) and I was able to get Ubuntu up and running with minimal effort. I've got it on an old Pentium-D with 512MB of RAM, no issues. Although I'd love to upgrade that box to something quieter and more power efficient like the Atom. I've been happy using either the Controller or iPeng to control playback. But it depends on how you envision this integrated into your setup. Which SB is best for you totally depends on the requirements and usage scenarios. In my living room I like to see what is playing when sitting in the couch and hence the SB3 is the best choice. Regarding controlling the SB3 I prefer both the SBC and the IR remote. Using the IR remote searching is a lot quicker (using the lazy search plug-in). Searching with the SBC is no fun! However browsing through your library and picking tracks or albums to listen is much more fun with the SBC. In the kitchen I have speakers on the top of the closets and no room to install a SB3 on a decent place hence the pleads for a receiver to be placed on top of the closets too. The upcoming SB Touch has a lot of potential but has two caveats: 1. The touch part will only be usable when placed on comfortable location. Many SBs are placed at the other equipment often on low height making the touch part hardly usable unless you like to kneel down every time 2. It has several methods to get a bit perfect rip but it does not use AccurateRip. How much does your power cost? At .10/kwh a standard PC like the one your using uses about 120watts and costs about $105 a year to run. A VortexBox appliance uses 24 watts and cost $20 a year to run and a Micro applaince draws 6 watts a year and cost $5 a year to run. So if you bought a VortexBox Micro Applaince for $400 your payback would be about 4 years just in power savings!
