We had a small X marked on the side of the case. Every so often the
radar would just go nuts. We did find that if you hit the side of the
case where the 'X' was, it would instantly clear up. I don't know what
the problem ever was, because nine months later it was still doing it
when I left. We had checked every single wire and replaced every single
tube with no joy. We even resoldered every joint, and did everything
else we could think of. We even had the yard technicians go through it
with a fine tooth comb. No joy. For all I know that damn radar is still
doing it, except I am sure it was retired from service many years ago.

Clearly, what you need to do is get a sharpie and mark a small X on the
side of your squeezebox. :)

[slim] Interesting problem/observation

2006-10-09 Thread Mike White

Don't know if this is a bug, or something just got whacky.

Running an SB2 with 6.5.0 on Windows XP.

On Saturday the 7th, I turned on the SB to get internet radio through
squeezenetwork. It worked fine for awhile, then I happened to look at
the SB display, and noticed that it was displaying that it couldn't
connect to squeezenetwork - however the station I was listening to was
coming through fine. Okay, it is probably just what was buffered I say
to myself. I watch it for awhile, and it keeps doing this. Connects to
squeezenetwork (SN), then says it can't connect, connects again, then
says it can't connect. Over and over. The music keeps coming through
just fine.

I finally say the hell with it, I want to be quiet, and listen to
music, not go trouble-shooting. I switch to slimserver. Everything is
fine. Music plays just fine.

Sunday the 8th, I saw the e-mail about SN being down so I just continue
to listen to slimserver.

Monday the 9th. Decide to listen to internet radio through SN. It
connects just fine, no problems, for a moment, then a god-awful hum
comes through the speakers. Not a 60 cycle (hertz to you newcomers)
hum, just a horrible hum.

Oh s***, what has gone wrong now? Turn off the SB, leaving just the
amplifier on. Still a hum (actually it is more of a horrible static hum
than anything else).

Tried connecting to slimserver - still a horrible hum.

BTW - the wireless router is new, about a week old. No problems with my
laptop.

SB is connected to aux in, so I try playing just a CD. No problems.
Turn the SB back on and switch to aux. Horrible hum.

Okay, let's see if it is the amplifier or the SB. Unplug the SB. Turn
the amp back on, switched to aux. No hum - no noise either, but that
was expected.

Turn the SB back on - go through the setup again, and voila. No hum,
connects to SN or slimserver with no problems, no hum.

I have no idea what, if anything other than gremlins, caused this, or
what corrected it.

It sounds like an old radar set we used to have when I was in the Navy.

In any event, if anybody has any ideas (other than painting an 'X' on
the side of the SB) I would love to hear them.
