[slim] Just what is the Slim Devices USP?

2007-02-24 Thread amcluesent

Having bought a SB3, it's been interesting to read other posts about the
chasm between the quality of SB3/Transporter and the rickety 6.x
Slimserver.

Given the growing number of suppliers of UPnP mediaServers and players,
this made me wonder just what is the Unique Selling Proposition of Slim
Devices?

The J.River Media Centre is way ahead of Slimserver in look feel,
most of the NAS boxes offer am easy route to installing a mediaserver
like TwonkyMusic etc.

IMHO, Slimdevices need position themselves for the interoperable
mass-market ASAP or risk losing their early-mover advantage as media
server s/w become a commodity offering on NAS boxes and the rumoured
Windows Home Server.

It's probably about music, not user interfaces.
