Re: [slim] Lossless Classical Recordings
Conversion from WMA to WAV is easy using DBPowerAmp and then this can be encoded to FLAC. By using MP3Tag you can copy other the tags from WMA to FLAC. It works OK except that the conversion seems to add a very small amount of silence to the beginning and end of the WAV and this needs to be edited out if you want gapless playback but it is possible. Artwork and booklet is free. Only thing they haven't included is the CD label so you can create a CD if you want. There is no DRM and the 24bit 44.1K Flac files play fine with the Squeezebox. I have discovered that over the years about 3% of my CD's have developed errors and therefore I prefer to backup my Flacs onto an external hard disc so CD's no longer hold any real advantage for me, I would rather have FLAC. Having had CDs become unrippable over time, I'm less convinced of their value as a backup medium anyway! I see that the artwork and sleeve notes are downloadable (latter as PDF). I haven't tried, but presumably you don't have to pay for those...? For classical music, the sleeve notes can be essential - I often find myself digging them out when listening to something I've ripped. I've even scanned a very few of them in, though I've yet to do anything about making them easily accessible from SlimServer. > (I'm presuming that the effort to lick the WMA files into shape will be > comparable to te effort in ripping and tagging that I'd do with a > CD...) > > No mention of DRM anywhere... It will be interesting to hear how you get on. Is it still the case that ReplayGain doesn't work for WMA (Lossless)? How easy is it to convert WMA Lossless to FLAC? Can anything convert WMA Lossless and preserve tags? I still have lots of (lossy) WMA files in my library, for historical reasons (and some are my master copies - no CD to re-rip). The lack of ReplayGain support for them neans that I can't really use ReplayGain at all, which is sometimes annoying. -- Brian -- Brian Ritchie Brian Ritchie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2319 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35799 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'm not sure that's enough of a discount to compensate me for the loss of flexibility and the inherent backup that a CD provides, but its close. (I'm presuming that the effort to lick the WMA files into shape will be comparable to te effort in ripping and tagging that I'd do with a CD...) No mention of DRM anywhere... Just tried a purchase. Although they say they are CD standard in fact they are 24bit 44.1K WMA Lossless recordings so perhaps they are worth the cash. -- MrStan MrStan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1771 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35799 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

First they have to pay a licence fee for the use of WMA and then there is the hosting fee which will need much more storage space but it shouldn't be much. Also they recently outsourced their Internet and Postal sales so I suspect there could be some agreement about not underpricing the product directly. -- MrStan MrStan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1771 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35799 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Lossless Classical Recordings
Appologies if you already know but Chandos Records have begun selling WMA lossless recordings on line. That's the good news. The bad news is that they are a couple of pence more expensive than the CD's themselves but it's a start, pity they haven't discovered flac. http://www.chandos.co.uk -- MrStan MrStan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1771 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35799 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
