Re: [slim] Powered bookshelf speaker for bookshelf ?

2009-11-01 Thread esbrewer

The reviews of the A2 and A5 on these forums (and elsewhere) are
overwhelmingly positive. However, if you read a good number of them
you'll notice consistent references to the bass being ramped up. I
really enjoy my A2s, but that given their bass response I would be
reluctant to place them on bookshelves near the corners of the room.
Maybe some of the other options folks have mentioned here are a bit more
honest on the low end.

That being said, few of the other options out there will match the
Audioengines in terms of aesthetics and build quality. You can tell
from the moment you lay hands on them that a great deal of care when
into their design and assembly.

Due to some reshuffling in the living room, I currently have my A5's at
different heights, and one on a table and one in a bookshelf, very
snuggly at the side. So, does it sound different to when they'd been
painstakingly positioned to give the best acoustics to the room? Yes.
Does it sound different to the wife or anyone else that comes to the
house? No.

I think the A5's are fantastic speakers, and am very happy with their
sound to this day. Definitel one of my better purchases (along with the
Classic of course!).

I think that usually it is actually the opposite. You'll get more,
albeit of lesser quality, bass by placing rear-vented speakers closer to
the wall.

Nonetheless another option, if you insist on the AE route, could be the
A2's (which afaik are not rear-vented) and the accompanying sub.

Thanks all for your quick answer, it definitely helps !

That's the issue, the speaker will be squeezed between the books,
pushed to the back of the shelf cabinet, so not much of an air gap.

These are an acoustic-suspension design, so no worries placing on a
 bookshelf.

You will probably require an attenuator.

That is probably a nice option, however the attenuator and the
connector types would make things more complex than I like. Actually,
seeing those XLR and jack reminded me time at the university...

I don't really want to add a subwoofer, but I may have to.

This is very good to hear. Yeah, I bet my wife and kids would not know
better. At certain stage in life, you have to be practical and can't
really go for the optimal solution.

Actually, priority number one is to protect investment from the kids. I
started ripping my CDs when my older kid managed to stuff two CDs
together in the CD player and badly scratch another one. Also gone are
all the remote controls, which is why I'm waiting for the Touch.

My belief is that with the speaker stuck in the cabinet and squeezed
between books, with virtually no space behind, you will have no bass
extension at all.

I would prefer to avoid a sub if I can, as I would need to find a place
to put it, out of reach of my kids...

[slim] Powered bookshelf speaker for bookshelf ?

2009-10-29 Thread jean2

Hi,

I'm looking forward to buy a SqueezeBox. I don't want to keep my
old hi-fi around, as I want to keep things simple, and it's not that
special anyway. So I'm looking in into powered bookshelf speakers.
The gotcha is that my current speaker are in a bookshelf cabinet,
with books on the side and top, and this is the obvious place to put the
new speakers. With kids running around, I can't really consider other
options.

I searched the forum, and it seems that one of the favorite is the
AudioEngine 5. It's in the price range I was considering. The dimension
are also similar to my old speakers.
What worries me is that the bass-reflex is at the back (my current
speaker has it in front). My feeling is that I would be loosing all the
bass extension of the bass-reflex, and that may also impact the response
of the bass woofer.

First question : are my worry about the AudioEngine 5 bass-reflex
overblown ? Has anybody tested the AudioEngine 5 against a wall or in a
shelf ?
Second question : is there alternative speakers in the USA, similar
in price/size/feature as the AudioEngine 5 but more compatible with
bookshelf use ?

Thanks in advance...

Jean

As long as you keep some air gap behind the A5 speakers you shouldn't
have to worry about the bass. These things put out a LOT of bass for
their size.

They really are great.

You will probably require an attenuator, and NHT makes 'the PVC PC'
which works great with the Squeezebox (and breaks ground-loops too).

If you want more bass and thus also add a subwoofer, you will have a
very nice sounding full-range system.
