Was experiencing 12 secs buffering listening to Internet Radio stations
with streams above 128 kbps (192 & 320) on my Transporter. Tried
increasing Advanced/Network/Radio station buffer secs = 10, no change.
However, tried Player/Transporter/Audio/Streaming mentod = *Proxied*
streaming (previously *Direct* streaming). Stations now play with no
buffering, thanks

Answering related to use of BBCiPlayer/BBCRadio plugins:
1) If you do get rebuffering with aac/flash streams then you should try
moving to wma. The reason for this is that with aac/flash the
player/server only maintains a very short buffer and so will rebuffer
with relatively short breaks in internet connectivity or congestion at
the radio station end. With wma, if the buffer threshold is set for
longer then you should get a much deeper buffer which can absorb more
network variability.
2) There was a bug in my rtmp code which could cause reboots especially
on radio - I think this should be fixed in the latest radio firmware.
If you see reboots please change to wma.

Please note that the plugins and rtmp implemention are a 3rd party
additions which I try to maintain to provide the best BBC capability on
squeeze devices. The rtmp case uses an implementation which was written
from scratch using the adobe spec rather than the closed flash
implementation available as a browser plugin means there will be
differences. This is especially true related to undocumented features
such as buffer management. In most cases I think people find the rtmp
stream works well, but if you experience problems please try the wma
ones.

Answering your last point - no there is no rtmp verification on the
audio streams. The plugins are able to receive all bbc radio streams
at present.

I insist once again.
I often have to deal with software developers convinced that they
actually identified the reason for a problem, and often have to spend
far too much time to make them realize they were wrong.
The original poster problem may be due to BBC plugin, but nothing
written in this thread definitly proves that this is actually the main
reason for the rebuffering problem.

Re: [slim] Radio streaming stops intermittently

2010-12-14 Thread nicolas75

I had given up with this thread, but since you raise it again, I take
some time to give my thoughts about this problem.
I find astonishing than somebody can say that a thread which title is
"Radio streaming stops intermittently" is only about BBC iplayer
plugin.
Even if in this specific case, it might be so.
Anyway as someone who is in the software business, I do consider than
the original problem raised in this thread can be related to BBC, but I
also do consider that it actually may be due to something else.
Squeezeboxes products are prone to rebuffering problems, no matter if
that is due to hardware, mysqueezebox.com, firmware, internal plugins,
external plugins, or whatever else, I don't know.
You will find a lot of posts complaining about that, and there is
always a good reason to blame something else than squeezeboxes.
I was adviced to open a new thread about that, I am sorry, I gave up.
I have the feeling that if I say that I am using a wired connection
with a Belkin brand cable, some smart guy will come and say that my
rebuffering problem thread is specific to "Rebuffering problem
specifically related to Belkin brand cables wired squeezeboxes " ...
Let's face it, squeezeboxes DO HAVE rebuffering problems.
I can compare with other software/systems used to listen to internet
radios.
Rebuffering problems are more frequent, and more annoying with
squeezeboxes.
When rebuffering also occurs in others systems, the rebuffering time is
much longer (actually inacceptably longer in my opinion) with squeezebox
than with others systems.
I am in the businness of developping commercial softwares for end
users.
Squeezebox Touch is not a free product, it can be considered as
somewhat expensive for a lot of people.
This kind of problem should definitly not be treated in this "geek"
way.
A paying customer doesn't want to know why it doesn't work.
He wants a product that actually work fine, period.
I have owned squeezeboxes for several years now.
I am in the computers and software business.
I switched from SB3 to Touch to use TinySBS.
I gave up because TinySBS is definitly not working the way it should,
and I came to the conclusion it cannot handle a large library of flac
files.
I could make it work fine, and wait from time to time, when unexpected
rescanning occurs.
I won't because I didn't bought this Touch to debug it, or wait 10
minutes when I would like to listen to music.
So I use the Touch the way I used my SB3, plus the Touch screen which
is nice, plus the better built in dac, and I am fine with that.
TinySBS is not mature, I don't want to lose my time with it, and I am
satisfied with the Touch without TinySBS.
But rebuffering problems are getting worse, it is not serious to deny
it.
It can work fine for some time (it has actually been working fine for
me last weeks).
But I regularly have problems, like many other people, and when I have
rebuffering problems, it is either
- only with squeezebox
- or much worse with squeezebox than with others software/systems.

My Squeezebox Radios, that have in-built AAC processing (and hence
don't use SBS to convert AAC), have similar symptoms, worse actually
because from time to time the radios will freeze and reboot. I have
switched everything over to WMA and certainly the interruptions,
rebuffering and reboots are much less common. It's to early to say
whether the symptoms are fully resolved.

Is there something possibly within the BBC's Flash/AAC set-up that is
incompatible with the SBS and Radio processing capabilities? I read
somewhere that the BBC introduced SWF Verification for its RTMP streams
in February, whose purpose is to interrupt non-compliant streams. Any
thoughts on this?

Well the title of the thread is "Radio streaming stops intermittently"
Which is exactly my problem.
I suggest the title should be changed, if it only deals with BBC ...

I have no problem starting another thread, but, being professionaly
involved in software development, I can hardly imagine those problem
being related to one specific broadcasting streaming, but much more
related to squeezebox devices (in a general way, not only with specific
streams)
In my opinion, it would be more useful to have one specific thread
about that, than one thread per radio streaming having problem.
Especially if the problem doesn't come from the radio stream, but from
the squeezeboxes devices ...

I think you should start your own thread as you have a different
problem.

As a general point, when using mysb.com radio station stream directly
from station to player so the problem is either network related or
Touch related - the servers are not involved. You should contact
support there may be some player incompatibilities with the french
stations you are playing or perhaps because stream initial contact is
from Germany (i.e. outside France) where the mysb.com servers are
located.

It is not BBC streams, I am listening to french radios.

People have problems in HongKong
see http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82862

Honestly I don't understand how people can blame radios streams or
internet connections.
Everything works fine listening with a PC and any audio software.

It is only with Squeezebox that we have random rebuffering (and
regularly some strange "pops" in the sound as far as I am concerned).

I don't know if there is a problem with mysqueezebox.com, or if the
Squeezebox trying to contact some remote IP address interfere with the
stream or the playing, or whatever else.

But the problem is quite certainly with Squeezebox software or servers

Hello

I have now several rebuffering per hour when I'm listening to radio
streams.
This started a few weeks ago.
I had almost no problem for several years before ...

I have a wired SB Touch, connected to my router and a FTTH internet
connection ( 100 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload).

I am in Paris, France.

This really recently got worse and worse.
Is it related to mysqueezebox.com ?

Using AAC is good because PC acts as a proxy which can help with
network related problem whereas a WMA stream will go direct from
station to player.

AAC cannot be played natively on Classic or Boom so it is transcoded by
SBS into Flac. Flac would typically need at least 700kbps which I think
is unlikely with signal strength you indicated. I think this is your
problem since you have no problem with MP3 which probably have lower
bit rates.

A 10 mins network test would help confirm your throughput - can you not
disable the screen saver while you do the test.

Assuming you cannot improve the wireless strength, I suggest you select
WMA as preferred format in BBCiPlayer plugin.

If there are still a few problem perhaps you could try enabling PC
proxying of the stream using the Settings/Player/Audio/MP3 streaming
option - the name is misleading as this setting also applies to WMA
streams.

These settings can be changed without system restart so it is easy to
run a few tests one after another.

Thank you for persevering

System info is in the first post, but please advise if there's
something specific I haven't mentioned.

I've looked at the iplayer settings: (home/server settings/BBC
iplayer/Prefer WMA streams) and this is unchecked, suggesting that this
is AAC. Should I change this to WMA?

>From a network point of view, these are the wireless signal strength:
Bedroom: 36%
Lounge: 28%
Boom (kitchen): 81%

The wireless router is above the Boom, so I'd expect a high reading
there. Bedroom is across from the router and the Lounge is downstairs
and diagonally furthest away from the router.

For the network tests I did the following:
Run both Boom and Lounge at 1mbps (1000kbps) both running: 100% ave:
99% for over 30 mins _at the same time_ I did this purely because I
can stand in one place and control both boxes and see both displays.

The Bedroom player... now that's something different... I can run the
tests at any bit rate, but every time, after exactly 30 seconds, the
display switches to Weather Underground (my power off screensaver)

However it does not appear to turn off... because when I press right
arrow or down arrow, it brings the network test back up. This differs
to when the SB is actually powered down, as when you press right, it
goes through visibility and precipitation and down arrow advances
through the next few days.

So - I can't really do a network test on the Bedroom player for more
than 30 secs. At 500kbps it's 100%/100%, at 1000mbps it's 100%/99% at
1500kbps it's 100%/99%-ish

OK, so then I took the bedroom player downstairs to the same position
as the Lounge player. Still appears to turn off after 30 secs, but the
network test is pretty bad, even though I've expect it to be comparable
to the Lounge player. It pretty much gets up to 320 / 500kbps before
it starts to drop packets.

After I bring it back upstairs, it's back to the same readings as it
was before I tried it downstairs.

Do I have a faulty Bedroom unit?
Are the wireless signal and network tests within expected tolerances?
Is there anyway I can factory reset the Bedroom player? Is this the
right course of action?

I thank you again for your time with this.
Regards, Phil

Unlikely to fix any problem unless you identify the cause of the

System info and more details always help - for example are you playing
AAC or WMA BBC streams ? AAC need transcoding by PC but WMA are played
natively by player.

Why have not done the network test on the bedroom player - it is a no
brainer - just run the test from the SB3 menu
Settings/Information/Network Test. This will help isolate the problem
to either network or server.

The other issue I have currently - is that with locally held files

even if I play by genre, artist, album, etc etc... the first track on
the playlist repeats, even though on the web console, there are
different tracks listed.

This all started when I modified genres to be included in the random
feature. I've since changed it back and the issue still appears.

I can't imagine this is linked to my 'connection' issues, but all of
this appears to have started at about the same time...

I'm thinking that SB server is screwed... what is the best way of
removing the server end software, re-installing and making it start
from scratch, if indeed that is the best course of action?

Many thanks for your continued interest and patience.

Today I've had issues where the squeezebox service will just stop on

You should also consider network problems - such as bursts of
interference or faulty network equipment / cables.

Run the network test and check what is the max you can get 100% for at
least 15 mins since your problem may relate to bursts of interference
rather than weak or poor signal strength.

For wired connections check network statistics to see if
error/retry/timeout counts increase at the same time as you have
problem with your players.

Re: [slim] Radio streaming stops intermittently

2010-10-22 Thread spindoctor

Hi guys

I spoke too soon I think after two days of radio streaming and
sync-ing appearing to be ok, I now have the same problem back again.
This time the fault appears within a few mins (or even a minute) of
starting the stream off.

It's a real shame, because I've owned and been a few of SBs for many
years, but this is really getting on my pip.

It does seem to mainly be one SB that displays the issue.

I'll take a look at the file types as per one of the first posts.

Thanks for all of your help so far.

You need to get some more info on which end broke the link.

Some stations (and ISPs) are setup to stop users having connections
running for a very long time. If the break occurred from your end there
are a number of possibilities but it would require more investigation
and logging.

bpa
Thanks!

I tried changing the radio buffer from the default (3, I think) to 10
and thus far everything seems to work fine. I may revert back to
double check, but I've been working from home listening to the radio
all day and it all seems ok

Hmm... that is except for one thing... whilst it doesn't randomly and
intermittently stop now, it does seem to turn off after about 6 hours
continuous use. Not sure if this is new or whether it always did this.
(I can't be sure as I rarely have the SB on for such a long time)

Comments welcome, but I'm very pleased with the fix to the intermittent
radio issue.

Do you only use your SB3's connected to your local SBS server on your
computer?
If you do switch them over to MySqueezeBox.com then you can't Sync
Last.fm streams.

Beyond that I'd suspect possible WiFi issues as well. Have you tried
the SB3's unSynced and wired, just temporarily for testing?

Re: [slim] Radio streaming stops intermittently

2010-10-11 Thread spindoctor

Thanks for your replies

I've not tried changing / checking whether it's AAC or WMA just yet.

I have some other information for you.

I was using Last.fm streaming service and the same thing happened as I
originally wrote about with BBC.

Two players (1xBoom and 1xSB3, both wireless) were playing downstairs
fine, but the one (SB3, wireless) upstairs appeared (by the display) to
be playing, but not actually playing anything. I have a small spectrum
whilst playing, and there was no movement on the display of spectrum.
Only way I can bump it back into life is either to wait until it kicks
back into life or turn off and back on again.

Many thanks for your help so far.

Some firewall "hang" on to packets for longer than they should and
perhaps this is aggravating the rebuffering.

Have you tried increasing the Radio Station buffer seconds to see if it
makes a difference (WebUI Settings/Advanced/Network ) ?

Hi
I have now tried reloading BBC Iplayer and it makes no difference.
Even using MySqueezebox.com. I have a PIX 501 hardware firewall
between my network and the internet. I am wondering now if this is
somehow effecting the packet transport in some way.

You could try installing the iplayer plugin (go to the web settings
page, plugins, recommended 3rd party plugins and it should be in the
list)

This uses the same streams as the desktop iplayer by default and so may
be better just because it is using alternative streams.

Are you in the UK or not ? URLs are different and mismatching can cause
problems.

The PC Listen Live through iPlayer will be using AAC whereas if you are
using the URL from BBC - they are WMA.

Which URLs are you using ?
Are you using the iPlayer plugin as this will give you a choice between
AAC and WMA ?

What sort of players are you using ?
Are they wired or wireless ?

Re: [slim] Radio streaming stops intermittently

2010-10-09 Thread Brian Sowter

I have 4 logitec player products on a network and I use a ReadyNAS with
the latest squeezecenter software. My internet connection is very fast
ADSL2+.

All internet radio stations on any player are unusable because of
re-buffering. BBC World Service is better than Radio 4. I copied the
URL used by the players for Radio 4 form my squeezecenter and connected
by a browser. This is also unusable.

On a computer BBC radio 4 Listen Live is fine.

It would seem that the URL's used by the players are all congested but
this seems most unlikely as there is no station which is satisfactory
even at 4 am in the morning.

I have a feeling there is something about the protocol used by the
players is somehow incompatible with my network or indeed my ISP.

Oh it transcodes to FLAC then he must try to stream FLAC files from
local server, just rip a CD as flac .
FLAC is ca 800kbps .
And try wired.

Re: [slim] Radio streaming stops intermittently

2010-10-09 Thread bpa

The BBC has had streaming problem in recent past - there are some things
you may do to minimise the issue such as using an alternative format or
increasing buffer but you should first characterise the problem.

As Mnyb suggested - first determine if it is a BBC only problem. Since
you have two different sort of gaps - you may have more than one
problem each with similar symptoms.

Are the players wired ? When using the plugin and AAC format you are
streaming Flac to all players and if they are synchronised then you may
be having network problems if there is other burst of other wireless
traffic or a burst of interference.

Does it happen with Live or "Listen Again" or both ?
Are you using the AAC or WMA streams ?

[slim] Radio streaming stops intermittently

2010-10-08 Thread spindoctor

Hi all

I'm having problems with internet radio / streaming.

My setup is a Windows XP PC running Squeezebox server Version: 7.5.1

The PC is wired directly to the router.

I have 2x wireless Squeezebox Classics running firmware version 130 and
a wireless Squeezebox Boom running firmware version 50.

As far as I can tell... when I'm playing locally hosted MP3s from the
PC there is no problem.

When I play BBC Radio 1 / Radio 2, it is prone to stopping. I am using
the BBC iPlayer plugin and I am in the UK.

I did have all three synchronised, but I unsynchronised the one
upstairs to see if that was the issue. It still stops intermittently.

Sometimes it will stop for 5-10 minutes or more and then randomly burst
in to life. Today I was having dropouts for maybe 2-3 seconds every 30
seconds or so.

I think I've also had issues when streaming from Last.fm although this
seems much more stable.

My internet connection is provided by Virgin (cable) at 10mbps. I used
to have a ~3mb ADSL connection at my old house and did not have any of
the problems I am having now.

Can someone please recommend the next course of action?

Also... I've just checked the server log and there are hundreds if not
thousands of the following entries:

[10-10-08 18:49:16.1013] Slim::Networking::IO::Select::__ANON__ (146)
Error: Select task failed calling
Slim::Web::HTTP::sendStreamingResponse: illegal file descriptor or
filehandle (either no attached file descriptor or illegal value): at
/Slim/Networking/IO/Select.pm
line 149.

May not be related but it's clearly not liking something.

Many thanks, Phil
