[slim] Re: Help Required on Ripping...you would think it would be easy...

2006-12-18 Thread Secret Squirrel

There have been MANY discussions on this forum regarding this but I have
never put in my 2 cents worth, so here it goes...

I use Easy CD-DA Extractor (http://www.poikosoft.com/). I first rip my
CDs to FLAC and then use the converter to convert the FLAC to MP3 for
my Archos. In between those two processes I use Foobar 2000 to apply
replay gain tags. Easy CD-DA will down load album covers and place them
in the tags, but I do not use those imbedded tags. I also find that many
CD's tags are not what I expect or need, so I use MP3tag to
change/correct/spiff up. It's definitely a labor of love but worth your
investment.

...am I not right in thinking that the new version of Itunes doesnt
update the tag info with the artwork - it just hold the artwork on the
pc, so when you copy it off that PC, the artwork doesnt appear ...just
tried it and it looks that way

I use DBPowerAmp and like it very much. Beta 12 is stable and has lots
of additional features that plug into AllMusic, etc. For any CDs that
don't have the correct tabs I use MP3Tag (does all tags not just MP3)

2006-12-18 Thread MelonMonkey

iTunes 7 will get album art but not insert it into the music file. it
will store it in its own folder for (currently) exclusive use by iTunes
and iPods.

This isn't much of a problem. You can easily manually COPY and PASTE
the artwork from the main iTunes view into selected tracks to force it
to store within the tag metadata of the files.

Detailed instructions: http://twistedmelon.com/blog/sep2006.html

For Windows, use CTRL instead of Command to copy and paste where
instructed.

If you have only a few albums worth of tunes this isn't very
cumbersome. if you have a lot of music then you'll want to automate
the process with a script.

In Mac OS X you can use AppleScript and there are a couple of existing
scripts to do the job.

Get one here (inspired by above instructions):
http://nslog.com/2006/09/24/itunes_artwork_in_id3/

Someone else will have to offer up a Windows-specific script/automated
alternative.

The two best sources for album artwork on the net (bar none) are iTunes
and RateYourMusic.com

To Rip in Windows, use EAC or AudioGrabber.

To Encode to MP3 use LAME.

Do anything other than the above for MP3 and you're wasting your time.
For FLAC see http://Xiph.org

If you don't want to get a rip program with all the bells and whistles

[slim] Re: Help required

2006-01-08 Thread Badger

Thanks for your comments Mark/Cejay.

I agree, I-Tunes seems to be making a mess of everything. From reading
through all of these forums, it apears to be a common theme. Also, lots
of mentions of MMM and Moodlogic, so I have just downloaded the latter.
I don't fully understand everything it does yet.

So my Q now is, being experienced users, how do you advise me to start
(ie from scratch).

eg:

1. Rip CD's to MP3 using EAC/MP3tag etc to 1 place (my music?)
2. Organise/Tag and create play-list using Mood logic
3. Point Slim server to Mood logic
4. Same as above for downloading MP3's?

Cheers

Re: [slim] Re: Help required

2006-01-08 Thread Mark Lanctot
EAC quickstart guide:
http://users.pandora.be/satcp/eac-qs-en.htm

In-depth guide:
http://users.pandora.be/satcp/tutorials.htm

Note the quickstart guide is newer and its suggestions
for MP3 arguments supercede those of the in-depth
guide.

But if you're ripping a CD, you should be ripping in
FLAC anyway. Reserve MP3 ripping for portable
devices.

There are many more tutorials that can be found using
google.

Mp3tag is simple enough that no tutorial is really
required. One hint though - remove ID3v1 tags and
only write ID3v2 tags. Otherwise entries will be
limited to 30 characters.

I don't use MoodLogic so I can't help there.

Regarding downloading MP3s, use Mp3tag to check and
correct tags. Be consistent so that SlimServer will
handle it consistently as well. Mp3tag makes
consistency easy since you can sort by field and make
mass changes.

At the web UI, in the settings section, you should see 3 lines:
Server Settings
Player settings for and a MAC address (00:01:02:03)
Player settings for and an ip address (127.0.0.1 for the software
player)

Click on either of the player setting lines.

Click on Audio

The first paragraph says this player can be synchronized with other
players ... Select the other player from the drop-down list and click
change.

Done.

To undo it, select No Syncronization.

But I suspect after doing so you'll be disappointed as IME they never
stay in sync for long.

Syncing SoftSqueeze and a hardware player will not be in sync because of the
Java Sound layer and buffering issues.
