[slim] Re: Slightly OT: Small Amplifier recommendations

2005-05-09 Thread lostboy

Stuart,

The line level outputs from an SB are sufficient to drive an AMP3
happily. The AMP3 has a single stereo input, so if you want to change
sources without unplugging then a passive selector or preamp will be
required.

If you use volume control on the SB then all you need is the AMP3, PSU
and some speakers. If you are feeding the AMP3 from a DAC and have the
SB set to max (for best quality) then you will need some form of volume
control before the AMP3, you can easily wire in a quality stereo
potentiometer to do this.

The basic AMP3 gain is either set by the input resistors and is fixed
when you build it. I am using the AMP3 with an SB1 at the moment and I
think the default gain setting for the AMP3 I set at build is maybe a
bit too high (certainly for internet radio, but not for classical cds
ripped to FLAC). I hope to receive my SB2 this week and will test this
as well to select the gain before I build my next AMP3.

Total cost - AMP3 £23 inc postage, PSU £15 (could be upgraded), Basic
Case & HW - say £15, about 6 hours effort for first assembly (will get
lots faster), and very tired hands from winding toroids. I think this
is brilliant deal for the quality, but the little TEACs do look much
prettier and save fiddling.

I bought one of these T-Amps at Target.com (not availabe in
their retail stores) for use with a SLIMP3. It is intended for
portable applications so it does not come with an AC adapter (it
runs on D batteries) so you will have to purchase one
separately.

As soon as I got it my wife decided to remodel our son's room
(it was his SLIMP3) so it's been put in a box and has never been
used. Hopefully, I will break it out soon and try it. I'll
report back and let you know how it works.

Iain,
You could just use a power amp and use the volume control on the squeezebox. If you wanted a really neat solution (and are a bit nifty with a screwdriver) you could get a power amp module from Maplins and mount it in one of the speakers... or flog your missions and buy a pair of active monitors (Tannoy, Alesis and Behringer all do fairly good active monitors for around 2-300 quid)

Cheers,
Joe

Folks:

I am about to install an SB2 in a room on a shelf with shelf speakers (Mission M30is - http://www.mission.co.uk/product/m3iseries/loudspeaker_m30i.htm ).

My problem is the shelf is 25cm (10in) deep and I need a reasonable amplifier to sit between the SB2 and the speakers that fits on the shelf. This sounds like it should be easy, but it's not been very easy so far. Most hifi separate amps are 30cm deep at a minimum.

The only amp so far I've found has been the Creek A50i which is 23cm deep (just fitting with an RCA at the back) but it's a bit over the top for the room and pricey at GBP 479 (USD 800+).

I've been through the archives to the list and seen some of the in-wall suggestions, but I don't really have that option as I've just replastered :)

I recall seeing an amp that was designed for PC amplification alongside a laptop as part of following a thread on this list once, but i can't find it at all.

Anyway, what I need is:

- a decent amp (by decent i mean it has to deliver a sound I'm likely to enjoy - I've been quite impressed by Cambridge Audio's A1 & Azur range so that is the kind of thing I'm after.
- nothing too expensive as it's only driving bookshelf speakers (that are pretty good for their size)
- 23cm or less deep and not wider than a standard piece of hifi separate (I could use something like a second hand NAIT 1 put sideways, but there's no guarantee of getting them at a reasonable price)
- available in the UK

Anyone any thoughts or suggestions they'd care to share with me ?

Thanks in advance

..Iain
