If you run it as a service then slimserver will load as soon as you
start the computer and, I believe, that if slimserver crashes then
windows will reload the service.

If you run it as a scheduled task then it will just load up as a regular
program. This is not much of a problem really as slimserver doesnt tend
to crash (cant remember the last time it happened)

I take it that it is best to have it as a service, is this achievable
if I step up to win2000?
Yes
How different is Lunix, and is that easy to set up?
It is not too bad to install if you choose the right distribution but it
is very easy to get VERY frustrated at it if you are used to windows and
things jsut 'working'. However if you fancy a challenge it is worthwhile.

I know not much about pc's so simple is good for me.
Probably best just stick with windows.
The other option would be to dual boot windows and linux until you are
happy just with your linux setup but that is another can of worms!

If you are running Win2000 or WinXP the installer will set it up as a
service automatically.

On windows 98, you'll need to use the Scheduled Tasks icon to
automatically start up the slim.exe at startup time.

If you are running a RedHat or Fedora Linux, then you should be able
to install the RPM file pretty easily, once you have Linux up and
running.

Deaf cat,
I'm using SlimServer on a Windows ME machine with no problems at all.
Only catch is I can't run it as a service, I have to start the app up,
close it and leave server running.
