I guess I'm just waiting for a download service that will allow me to
grab CD quality (or hopefully better) sound and use it on my
Squeezebox, Macs, and iPods. Until then, I'll be buying CDs and
ripping them in ALC.

Agreed that you could do the burn and re-rip, but the quality would
suffer. Personally, I'm not going below lossless these days anyway.
Apple's lossless works great and usually runs around 800kbps. Storage
is cheap, suffering through low-quality music is not.

Agreed. Forgive me, but I fail to see why people buy DRM audio and
then bitch about it later. Best thing to do is avoid it in the first
place.

I never have bought music from Itunes because of the bad quality and
DRM.
But my son gets itunes gift certificates and sometimes buys from them,
so it would be nice to be able to stream that as well.

IHe is weaning homself from itunes now that he understands the DRM and

I bought some singles from iTunes when I first got my iPod a couple of

You can use QTFairUse6 to remove the DRM from iTunes music without any
further degradation in quality.

Well, I figure he got the listening rights to the tunes legally, so
what's to stop you from firing up edonkey and downloading the flac version?

Burn them to an audio format CDR (or CDRW if you don't want to waste
blanks) - the licensing allows you to do this. Then rip them back in
whatever non-DRM'd format you like. A bit of a pain, but it's do-able.

You mean rip them back in whatever *lossless* non-DRM'd format you
like or you will further diminish the sound quality, converting that
128k AAC into the equivalent of a 96k or lower but still taking the
disc space of a 128k

Also, TFA suggests that licensed devices might soon be able to access
song title and artist info through the docking connector... but they
can already do that! (TuneView does it, for example)

OK, I'm confused ( as usual).
If you burn a 128 aac to disc and re-import at 128aac it's still 128,
right? So it's still the same (bad) quality but at least not inferior
to the original download.

Or am I missing something?

It's 2nd generation 128.

You're encoding it twice with the resulting additional degradation of
the sound.

Analogy: record a CD to cassette, then record the cassette onto another
cassette. The same principle applies.

Thanks for clearing that up , Robin.

So if it's re-imported ALAC or FLAC the sound is not degraded but you
are using FLAC size file for 128 sound quality?

What a rip, so to speak.
