Yes, I also realized that the 5GHz idea was nonsense, since none of the
Squeezeboxes supports that. Ethernet over powerline could be option.
Thanks for bringing that up, garym. What I did to day, as a start, was
move the SB Touch a couple of metres so that I could connect it to the
router via (real) Ethernet, at least temporarily. Turns out that the
rebuffering issue is gone. Probably because it SB Touch is now closer to
the Router (i.e. Wifi access point). But it could also be that the
speakers chose a better frequency, for some reason (perhaps because the
Xeo transmitter is now also closer to the access point?).

For anybody experiencing more serious issues with this kind of setup,
I'd like to point you to 'this addendum to the Xeo manual'
(http://www.dynaudio.com/int/xeo/XEO_OwnersManualA.html). It explains
how you can set your speakers to use a fixed frequency. Unfortunately,
Dynaudio does not tell us exactly what frequencies the speakers are
capable of using and how to set them. So if anyone figured that one out,
please post.

I have one unused WAP anyway but it's either 2.4 -or- 5 GHz, but before
I buy another WAP I guess those Powerline adapters are the better
option, if I ever need them. No, I would never buy those speakers at
their recommended selling price and not even at the current sale price.
I was lucky to get them used for less than half of their original
selling price.

Good point. I just followed the advice provided 'here'
(http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2405996,00.asp). I wonder, though,
if setting your router to 40 MHz alone already creates more interference
or whether you actually need to fully use it, which is probably only the
case at certain critical moments. But since my rebuffering issue seems
solved, I'll switch it back, since there are at least 20 wifis in my
area.

Your SB Touch only does wireless-G anyway. You will likely not see any
improvement with a dual band router/access point unless you connect your
SBT to a 5GHz access point acting as a wireless bridge to another 5GHz
access point connected to your router. Might work but starts to become
an expensive (and complicated) way to replace a 100mb wired ethernet
cable.

you might try "ethernet over powerline" adapters for connecting the
squeezebox back to your router. That has worked for me and many others.
Then the wireless speakers won't interfere. Also note that using the
40Mhz bandwidth can sometimes create *more* problems. More cross channel
interference, etc. If we and all our close neighbors switch to 40Mhh
bandwidth, an already bad problem (for those with close
neighbors...apartment buildings, etc.) will get much worse.

Re: [slim] rebuffering problem

2014-10-05 Thread chaug

In my case I've quite clearly identified wifi interference as the source
of the trouble. More specifically, its my new Xeo wireless speakers that
are causing the trouble. Can clearly see the dip in network quality when
running a network test at 1000kbps (Settings -> Advanced -> Networking)
when turning the speakers on and off. Great! Now I've great sounding
speakers and no more speaker cables all over the place, and but now I
have to solve the interference problem. I already tried switching the
frequency that the speakers use as well as that of the wifi. I also
increased the wifi's bandwith from 20 Mhz to 40 Mhz but all to no avail.
So I guess the only way to avoid the interferences is to either connect
the SB Touch with an ethernet cable or move my wifi to the 5 GHz band
(the speakers are on 2.4 GHz) by installing a dual band access point
(since my router doesn't do 5 GHz). As if I had nothing else to do...

yes, on *windows* machines after a change to or from daylight savings
time one needs to do a clear and rescan (or at least they used
tomaybe newer versions of 7.8 or 7.9 resolve this).

agree. rebuffering is most likely related to interference in wifi (new
neighbor with same channel, or new microwave, etc.) or a potential
problem in ethernet cabling (bad cable, bad connection at router, etc.).
Also, when getting rebuffering, you might see if if is related to a
synched player. I was getting some rebuffering on my transporter, and
realized it was caused by my RADIO (wifi connected) which happened to be
synched to the Transporter at the time.

I'm also starting to experience rebuffering issues (for the first time
in years) so I'd be interested to hear whether a rescan solved it. My
last full rescan is not that long ago (couple of weeks) so I doubt that
that will change things. But I'll try anyway.

I'd also like to understand how the scan (i.e. the state of the library)
is connected to the buffer issue. I find it difficult to see how one can
influence the other since the library is relevant when selecting a
track, but not when playing it, right? But I'm curious to learn all
about whatever might cause rebuffering on a machine with loads of free
CPU capacity...

Re: [slim] Rebuffering problem with wireless network....

2014-06-28 Thread morthan

Thank you for your suggestions. Before I read them I was thinking how
odd it was that the second closest player to the router had a signal
strength of only 20% and others much further away were much stronger. So
I did a little test and turned it off. Violaeverything else worked
as it should. I then realised that this Touch player was also connected
wirelessly to its speakers. Clearly that was interfering with the router
signal. I moved the player from its position to see if I could get a
stronger signal. Got it to 75% strength by moving it marginally. That
made the difference and I've now had no buffering for about an hour. I
might well have fixed the problem.

*_Another_issue__*you might be able to help me with is with settings. I
have one player that is named 'unnamed controller'. When I choose
'settings' in LMS and choose the 'player' tab I get this message '404
Not Found: playerid=00:04:20:27:0a:d3' and nothing else. I used to be
able to change the name of the player by going into this tab. Any
suggestions?

Re: [slim] Rebuffering problem with wireless network....

2014-06-28 Thread bpa

With such long delay and all the players are synced , I would guess that
one player may be the cause (the alternatives could be a server /
network overload or dying router) and so you may need only to "fix" one
player.

I suggest try to get a scenario where rebuffering happens predictably
and then run a series of tests, repeating the scenario but taking one
player out of the sync group for each test.

If rebuffering goes away on one of your tests when a specific player is
not in the sync group then check he player to see what is the problem.

If rebuffering does not go away - look for some more systemic such as
server or network overload.

.

20% is not good , as you see when syncing the player with worst wifi
would ruin it .

There are countless treads on this forum on how to trace wifi problems ,
read them a lot of good hints .
Having many neighbours with wifi ?

But my 0.02$:

*Squeezeboxes wifi is not the best .

*wifi itself is problematic and in some enviroments with disturbances
and competing networks it just won't do .

Therefore instead of wasting to much time fighting wifi issues just wire
up as much as possible of the system .
IMO things that don't move should have Ethernet , leave wifi to the

Are all the Squeeze devices wireless? What music format is going over
your network, FLAC, WAV, MP3? I think WAV would be most taxing and MP3
would be the least. What about the 7 cameras, are they live video and
wireless? If the answer is yes, I'd start shutting off cameras. If you
get to where all the cameras are shut down and still have the
rebuffering then you know your cameras aren't overloading the network
causing the squeezes to be rebuffering. I'm sure others will chime in
here too.

[slim] Rebuffering problem with wireless network....

2014-06-27 Thread morthan

I am running 6 synchronized squeezeboxes (3 Touch, 3 Radio) on a
wireless network through LMS on a current (fast) Readynas NAS. I am
getting constant rebuffering ( can range from a few seconds to a minute)
to the point that its completely unusable. This occurs irrespective of
whether I am using my local library or internet radio streaming. Signal
strength ranges 100% to 20% (strangely the 20% is second closest to the
router). I have tried a complete power cycle of the router and
squeezeboxes but that hasn't helped. I am also running 7 Logitech Alert
security cameras but my limited understanding is that they should not be
causing interference. I have tried to eliminate other issues such as
microwave etc but still have the problem.

I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions as I need to get it
working for a important function next week. Thank you in advance.

Try doing a complete "Clear Library and Rescan Everything". It's worth
doing every so often when re-buffering starts occurring. After the time
when the clocks change you can often get a bit of rebuffering activity
with LMS, so do the re-scan and see if things improve.

I don't have any answers, but I have a 3 VBA units (a 6TB, 4TB, and
3TB). All are running updated VB updates and LMS updates. I have
transporter, touch(s), Radios, and booms. I stream local FLAC files and
online things as well (like pandora). I have no buffering issues, etc. I
very much suspect that you have an issue with your network. Could be
something related to IP address, DNS info in your new VB setup, etc. I'm
not a network guy, but sure sounds like a network issue. And I do know
that with all the same equipment as you I have no buffering issues with
FLAC files (mostly 16/44.1 but I do have a few 24/96 files too that work
fine).

[slim] Rebuffering Problem

2012-10-31 Thread shamanjr

Hello, I have a Squeezebox system running on wifi thru a Timecapsule
with 3 airport express units extending the network. I have a Vortexbox
with 1Gb RAM, with almost 2TBs of FLAC files. My 8 clients are a
Transporter, a Touch, and 6 Radios. I recently switched Vortexboxes and
to a 2TB unit. I am experiencing significant rebuffering issues, about
every 10-20 seconds. Occasionally it causes the Transporter to freeze
and have to be reset. This only happens when I am streaming my local
collection, not on Pandora. I am running the most recent version of LMS
on the Linux based system. I posted at the Vortexbox forums and was
advised that it was most likely a network issue. I do not think that is
the case, as I never experienced any issues before, and do not
experience them with Pandora. I realize that Pandora sampling is lower,
but it seems that there is some sort of incompatibility or hardware
issue. I have reset everything, reloaded LMS and even reset the
timecapsule and the Expresses. This is a really frustrating problem.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering Problem - Squeezebox Classic

2011-09-25 Thread Fiddlesticks

Sorry for not repling sooner. Neighbours went away the other week and
everything got better. As it's a night-time problem I'm blaming their
baby listeners :) Doesn't help that my SB Classic is right up against
next doors wall I guess.

I think the issue was limited to FLAC files, probably just due to their
size. Thinking about it, YouTube vids used to hang in the same room on
my old laptop as well. Could be related.

Still, the WiFi tool was interesting and my router runs Tomato, so I
was able to boost the power (but not too much), which I believe has
helped.

Run (free) "inssider 2" on your PC to check what's going on in WiFi

Re: [slim] Rebuffering Problem - Squeezebox Classic

2011-07-11 Thread aubuti

I'd say the most likely cause is wifi interference. It could be a
neighbor's new router, or old router switched to a different channel
that collides with yours. Or cordless phones, or a baby monitor, or
microwave oven. Any of those could easily interfere with one of your
wifi devices (eg, the SB3/Classic) and not the other (eg, the Boom).
The "80% network" is an average figure that often doesn't capture
interference.

[slim] Rebuffering Problem - Squeezebox Classic

2011-07-10 Thread Fiddlesticks

Hi,

I have a Squeezebox Classic (Firmware 133) and a Squeezebox Boom
running on SBS Version: 7.5.4 - r32171. The hardware is an old Dell PC
running Ubuntu server.

Recently the Classic has started rebuffering when playing flac files
every 10 seconds or so.

The Boom is fine. Both have 80% network.

Any ideas?
