[slim] Redesigned Logitech web site

2009-09-25 Thread ShadowWar

Bit of a warning really: the home page now has a massive Flash interface
- it's all very pretty but not very swift to get round. The interface is
inconsistent as well: some pages have pop-up product descriptions and
others change the view entirely to the high-lighted product. Some views
scroll from side-to-side, and others are static or require you to click
on arrows at the side to change to sub-pages.
When you actually get to the Squeezebox page (sorry WiFi Music
Players), you need to scroll a long way to the right to get to see all
products. You can narrow the view, but the options for doing this are a
little odd: show all products which are Mac compatible? Linux
compatible? Funny, I don't see any hiding themselves!
I just get the feeling this is not going to display on my phone.
Oh, and the developers have left an obvious bug for IE8 users (but not
Firefox) - not that I've tested anything else - the Support drop-down
menu at the top of the page doesn't work: the two menu options (Product
Support / Contact Us) are permanently displayed in the same location as
the word Support.
Not quite a triumph then.

Separate note: I want the Radio! Now! In red, preferably. Will they be
available in the UK?

 Not quite a triumph then.

I hate websites with tons of Flash. I hate it in general, and more
recently, I've found that it is very, very difficult to get a 64 bit
Linux release to properly display Flash.

Neither Firefox 3.5 nor Google Chrome can get the plugin to work. Or at
least, I can't get the installation to work for either of them. I am
using Ubuntu 9.04 in the 64 bit version on my newest desktop computer --
mostly because I ordered it with 8GB of ram and with minor exceptions,
32 bit OS versions don't use (can't use?) more than 4GB.

In these days of bloated software and RAM being nearly free, it was
inexpensive, or perhaps even cheap, to get the system with 8GB of ram.

I consider myself a pretty serious geek, nearly 40 years of professional
software, a MS in Computer Science, 10+ computers in my house, and more
than five SqueezeBoxen.

I can't get Flash to work in a browser.

Massive Flash websites simply don't work at all for me.

Re: [slim] Redesigned Logitech web site

2009-09-25 Thread andynormancx

Oh dear, oh dear. As well as the massive chunk of Flash on the front
page there are some other unwelcome design choices.

When you get to the Squeezebox page, the page is so wide that it
doesn't fit on my browser window that is normally sized to fit 2/3 of my
1600 pixel wide monitor.

Also, you can't click on the nice big images of the products to open
their details pages. I expect a lot of users never to discover that they
can click on the name of the product to open the details page.

You can however drag the products around. WHY ON EARTH WOULD ANYONE
WANT/NEED TO DO THAT ?

The site is now lousy to use on the iPhone, due to the big bit of
Flash, the extremely fiddly two stage drop down AND pop out menus and
the small click targets when there is a perfectly good and large image
that could be the click target.

Oh and it is slow too [-]

Rant over.

In my day job I'm the Web Manager for a UK University. Had I come up
with this website I'd expect to be fired.

Where was the usability testing? Sideways scrolling - oh, please not!
Accessibility? Yes, flash linearises really nicely . . . Browser
testing? Opera on a Mac shows nothing at all - zilch (Ok, a bit of a
niche combination, but . . .)

Flash is good for cross browser video, and useful animation, but to use
it for static content shows a lack

Come on, guys, you're a multinational company - you're web team's
probably got a bigger budget than our whole IT department. What's your
excuse for this abomination?

So this is what the TransNav controller is? Er, isn't the controller
part of the Duet? Whoever wrote the copy for the Wi-Fi players section
had no real understanding of the products IMO.

THAT is exactly the problem.
Multinational companies with big budgets for their web site ALWAYS do
these sucking flash sites.
The one I work for is no exception to that. I know a guy who did the
last relaunch and he said there simply was no way around flash. It has
to be all that, well, _flashy_, animated stuff and in the end they only
really test against IE anyway...
Oh: And it performs s well when you test these sites on the
internal network...

The whole Squeezebox line seems to be an after thought.
They seem to be more about mice, keyboards, and speakers than SB.
If you didn't know about SB before, you would never find it on their
site.

Re: [slim] Redesigned Logitech web site

At first I didn't understand what all the fuss was about because I went
to the launched-not-that-long-ago SB website www.logitechsqueezebox.com,
where everything looks the same as it did since they announced the SB
Touch and SB Radio. So, in addition to the bizarre design choices on the
'www.logitech.com wifi music players pages'
there's the question of how these different non-cross-referenced are
supposed to co-exist.

Re: [slim] Redesigned Logitech web site

2009-09-25 Thread KingLouis

Looking at the new website, I tried to compare the Boom and the Radio,
using the compare this buttons:
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/wireless_music_systems/cl=us,enview=34?A1=1compProducts=5847A2=2compProducts=4707A3=3A4=4A5=5A6=6

Apparently the Boom has neither ethernet nor 802.11 wireless - Better
hurry home and pull out my network cable, then.

I wonder how the Boom is going to play any music with no network.
