Re: [slim] Thanks Slim Devices / Logitech!

2008-03-17 Thread sellars

The wait is over - my Duet just arrived at my door. I ordered it from
Slimdevices last Friday. I am impressed by how fast it made it along
the West Coast up to Vancouver, Canada!

I should have ordered from you guys right away - instead I tried to
order from a local reseller. What a big mistake. The first one I called
said they had a SB2 on display but wouldn't really oder the Duet anytime
soon. The second one took half of the cost right away and promised,
after checking with their distributor, that the unit would arrive
within 3-5 days. Instead, I waited 2 weeks just to hear that the first
available unit would be available in MAY! That's when I decided to bite
the bullet, pay for shipping and possible customs fees/duty. In the end
I just ended up paying taxes - no customs fees or duty at all!

So, Slimdevices still rules and Logitech must do something about their
supply chain. It was a shock for me to hear you guys got bought out by
Logitech, but you still rock my world. You should be proud to work at
such a great place!

That actually brings up an interesting point.

When Slim Devices was Slim Devices, that may have been the case as a
smallish company trying to break out and efficiently focus.

However as a part of Logitech now, is that still true?

Which begs the question and the point for this post: Didn't Slim
Devices BENEFIT from melding with Logitech? Didn't it get a bigger
budget, bigger RD, more engineers?

I don't know the answers but I certainly hope so as a consumer.

And from Logitech's point of view, I also hope so. I mean, I hope that
Logitech doesn't just look at Slim Devices the way England looked at the
original American colonies pre-Revolutionary war, just to be milked.

I assume that Logitech saw the vision for a stronger Slim Devices by
helping it expand beyond its relatively humble beginnings.

Isn't that so?

As an analogy, if you are familiar with the pro audio world, a smallish
company known as M-Audio (originally known as MidiMan) grew quickly,
caught the eye of Digidesign, which bought it. Now M-Audio is bigger
and better than ever, releasing ever more products every year. (And
Digidesign had previously been purchased by Avid, that accelerated its
own growth).

Oh, I am sure that is true: look at the Duet beta: they gave out a ton
of SBC's to get testing done. The Old SlimDevices probably didn't have
that kind of money; Logitech no doubt opened their wallets some and
said, If it will make a better product, go for it.

well obviously i disagree. u can keep the server / client model, you
just put them in the same small as u can get quiet as you can get,
cheap as you can get box.

so you don't want to buy it, so what? obviously others would.

but i don't feel like debating this at the moment and this isn't the

I have been with slim devices since I bought 3 slimp3s many moon ago. I
used a Mac as my server and had quite a few issues initially and
remember my many emails to tech support were often from Sean himself,
and many of my issues were fixed in a day or two with the nightlies.

I now have 3 SBIIIs and 1 SB and am now the proud and happy owner of a
duet system.

I was worried that the company would change with the logitech buy-out,
but those concerns have been shown unfounded.

thanks Sean!

Count me in too! Great product!

Using Rhapsody, Squeezecenter and the TiVo add-in for WHS on my NAS and
it works great. Was using MP3tunes prior to the NAS but I was

I only hope that someday I'll be able to stream to the duet controller,

Re: [slim] Thanks Slim Devices / Logitech!

2008-03-13 Thread ds2021

My experience with digital streaming goes back to the Rio/Dell Digital
Audio Receiver. No sync, no internet radio back then. It came with
software versioned 1.03, which never changed in the years that I
struggled with those things.

The Slim Devices hardware is great, certainly, but the I think the
attention to the software is what really sets it apart. Although some
here complain about bugs, dropouts, slowness, etc., I am not sure that
the success stories are so vivid. Also, I am not sure that the
contribution of the user-base to the software development is fully
appreciated either (I'll take the opportunity to applaud the Nokia
skin, iPeng, SuperDateTime, among others that I rely on daily).

I have had my share of issues, but these have been solved. How many
other hardware manufacturers do that so consistently? I have had gps
devices, pocket PCs, phones, computers, even cars, all of which with
issues that absolutely never receive attention from the manufacturer. I
am always surprised when I see complaints about overly frequent updates
to software and firmware here.

So yes, count me in as well. Great products. Ordered my Duet yesterday.
Waiting for the shipping email.

Now that is why I have purchased from Slim Devices. Sean has always
been all over the forums responding to all sorts of posts. I have yet
to see the same behavior from any other company.

I have a SB3 now, and will be buying a Duet based 50 percent on the
product itself, and 50 percent on the support from the community and
the company principals themselves.

That actually reminds me...used to be I could find all the old press
releases/blog posts from the Slimp3 days on the site (if I remember
correctly one of those posts had a photo of Sean working with a
soldering gun). Any chance that is still available in an archive
somewhere? I loved reading through the old info just to see how far the
company has come...

looks like ur testing the S/N ratio of that frosty beverage.

the jive absolutely floors me. i'm rarely blown away by electronics,
in fact even my SB2 didn't impress me like this has. the only thing i
can compare it is my first exp with a Tivo, (series 2) and i think this
surpasses it.

just amazing. i hope this ends all the logitech fears... i thought LT
was a good move then and now i think the duet proves it.

now, here's what i hope is next... a SB that has SC7 in it! it gets
music via usb or mapped network drive... that in combo with the jive
would be unstoppable. (and might be a way around DRM he adds
tantalizingly, ie copy the drm song to temp location on the SB/SC combo
and play from there using internal audio driver)

but i really am curious where you guys will go from here?

Re: [slim] Thanks Slim Devices / Logitech!

2008-03-13 Thread ripster

After a Squeezebox 2 and 3 I wasn't sure if I really needed a Duet.

I've played around with:
- laptop in a recliner in living room (too wonky)
- iPod Touch and iPeng (too slow)
- even have a Vista Media Center PC ... (ugh, TV recording is great but
Microsoft hasn't figured out Music)

But the Duet has been by far the best overall music listening
experience. There's something about effortless browsing that
transforms the experience.

I wasn't so sure that Logitech and Slimdevices was gonna work out as a
pair (I have a Logitech 1000 Universal Remote and it is a combination
of innovative hardware and incredibly dumb software) but know I kinda
see how well this Slimdevices marriage may work out. Looking forward
to Slimbox 5.

Thanks!

[slim] Thanks Slim Devices / Logitech!

2008-03-12 Thread JHC

I meant to write this as soon as I got my Duet (last Friday) but am only
just now pulling myself away from it long enough to write anything ;-).

A bit of background -- my only experiencing with streaming audio was
with a Netgear MP101 going to a J. River Media Center backend. I have a
library of just over 45,000 songs. The MP101 experience was
frustrating.. a lot of times it worked but rarely survived an entire
evening without having to reboot either the MP101 itself or Media
Center... not exactly a real plug and play solution.

Just before Christmas I was about to pull the trigger on a Sonos system
-- and just as I was getting ready, they decided to no longer sell
directly to Canada... and with no distributor near me it looked like I
was without options.

Ironically, someone on the Sonos forum pointed me in this direction,
mentioning the upcoming Jive release. So I found myself here, reading
everything I could.

The price looked right and unlike the Sonos, it looked like I'd have no
issues with Library size etc.

Eventually, after installing SC7 and getting up to speed (and opening a
couple of QA issues) I jumped in for a pre-order.

So now that I have my Duet, I can tell you it exceeds all expectations.
The pictures don't do this thing justice -- it is much nice looking than
I've seen in pictures... overall, the build quality is excellent. The
experience is better than expected too. I find the web interface to be
a little slow and clunky (but very impressive given what one has to
work with in a browser) but the controller is an absolute joy to use...
speedy and responsive.

I've been tinkering and playing with this thing for four days now and
have had no glitches at all... it just works.

I love the community aspect -- the open source server, the active
forums and the responsive bug tracking system and QA people. I opened
three issues prior to the SC7 release and on each occasion, emails flew
back and forth until we found the root issues... excellent.

To top it all off, when the pre-order shipments got delayed, you guys
made a very classy move and shipped for free!

So thanks guys for an excellent product and a fantastic experience.
Since Friday, three other people in my office have placed orders... so
I hope this thing proves to be smash success for you guys.

Best regards,

Jonathan
