I agree. The Classic also had one of my ultimate control schemes that
actually was introduced with the RCA 2000 TV set (from the 1960's - the
model # was the price) - 100% operation by remote control - no knobs on
the set so you HAVE to use the remote in order to do anything with the
device.

Re: [slim] The Google Squeezebox: Nexus Q

They need to drop the integral amplifier for starters. Total waste of
space for most people and just adds to the cost.

They also need to let people stream their own media collection from
their own DLNA servers. Plus they should support third party services
like Napster/Rhapsody, Spotify, Last.fm etc.

And of course let people put things like a Squeezebox player app on
there :-)

As it is, it just looks like an expensive copy of AppleTV with some
un-needed extra hardware features.

Well if this is a Google reference design (internally anyway), I would
not be surprised if this is the future of Logitech's music streaming
device strategy.

That is unless they fear the same mistake they made with the Google TV.

A really cool and *expensive* squeezebox! I like that they went with a
matte black finish so it doesn't function as a finger print magnet like
so many other glossy black devices.

Look at what happened with Google TV (which hits home here) - overpriced
device which nobody really understood what problem it was solving. I
have a feeling something similar will happen here with the Nexus Q.

Kind of cool physical design, but as all advertising images it looks a
lot nicer without the cables than it will in your own home when the
cables have to be attached to its back.

The social playlists idea seems kind of similar, but not exactly the
same, to what the free iPeng Party app for Squeezebox offers us.

It has the same issue as iPeng Party but opposite, with iPeng Party all
visitors have to have an iPhone with Nexus Q all visitors have to have
an Android, with the Squeezebox it's at least possible to do normal
remote control both with Android and iPhone, but maybe Google will have
an open API for Nexus Q so it's possible for third parties to provide a
iPhone remote control for it.

Nice with built-in streaming from Google Music, but the disadvantage is
likely going to be what's already mentioned in the article, that they
won't provide any support for other streaming services such as Spotify,
Rdio, Rhapsody and similar, but maybe that will work through third party
Android apps. Although, it's a bit worrying that the article talks about
a lock-in, could this mean that they won't support third party apps on
it ?

Overall it still feels positive that Google is trying to use Android for
something else then tablets/smart phones, the competition is needed and
hopefully it will also result in improved audio/music related features
in the Android OS over time. However, so far my feeling is that Google
is too scattered without any real long term focus except for anything
related to advertisement, so it would surprise me if they in the future
turn out to be preferred music streaming hardware provider, but I might
be wrong, maybe they really have decided to do something that stays this
time.

As already mentioned, running SqueezePlayer on Nexus Q, could make it
into a really cool Squeezebox, compatible to all our other Squeezeboxes
and possible to remote control with all our normal Squeezebox remote
controls, and making all streaming services we are used to available on
