Nobody using http://www.virtualbox.org out there ?
It's always better when it's free (GPL) ...

I haven't run the full vpc 2007 but the beta had one v. serious flaw.

No USB support.

Dont know if they changed that in the release version.

I am a happy vmware user so i wasn't bothered.

2007-12-09 Thread Ramage

I use Vmware Player which is free, and create the virtual machineson
EasyVMX http://www.easyvmx.com/

I use it for a number of linux and WinXP test setups.

I did try VPC 2007 but did not like it as much as Vmware player - so
stopped using it

In a way, they have--the host OS must be Windows. I'd certainly
consider using their product if it weren't for that pretty serious
limitation.

Workstation has always been the workstation product, but never free. The
GSX successor is called simply VMware Server and is free. Though it
doesn't offer all the bells and whistles of the workstation product like
multiple snapshots, integration with the desktop (d'n'd between host and
VM) etc.

I wouldn't want to work without it. Regularly testing the UI on
7+ browser/OS combos would be a nightmare...

Yes, you can run Linux on it.

I am in the industry and very familiar with VMware. Actually their
workstation used to be called "GSX" and was free a couple years back
(sounds like you probably know that).

XEN is pretty good and is the basis for several permutations out there
(Xensource who was acquired recently by Citrix, Virtual Iron, etc).

I think Virtual Iron is still free and although is missing a couple of
enterprise features, it is pretty good.

Yes, MS is late to the party, but the recent effort (VPC 2007) has
surprised me in how good it is.

Sure, I use VMWare workstation (not free) and Xen (free on Linux). It's
great stuff, but Microsoft is a little late to the party. I also worry
if they haven't put in any incentives against running a non-Windows OS.

[slim] VPC great for Testing!

2007-12-08 Thread ob_kook

Microsoft Virtual PC is free and allows you to run multiple concurrent
virtual PC's within a single actual PC. I've found this to be really
helpful when "messing around" with new configurations, plugin's,
versions etc. Heck, you can even run other O/S and don't have to deal
with multiple boot drives or messy emulators.

This is probably not news to many of you, but it has made a difference
in how aggressivley I am willing to try out new and different things.

I simply keep a template copy of a stable starting build (the entire
virtual PC mind you) and if things get too hairy, I delete the PC I'm
working with and start over with a fresh one.

Is anyone else using this technology?
