Re: [slim] What anti-virus/firewall protection program

2008-05-06 Thread bobkoure

I'd had Symantec Corporate on my server at one point. It started
creating problems when I upgraded to SC 7 (actually, it happened
mid-way through the series of betas). Fairly frustrating, and puzzling,
as I'd uninstalled Symantec some while before.
Turns out, the only way to -really- get their stuff out of your system
is to reformat and reinstall.

I was looking at other anti-virus apps, and finally decided - I don't
need one for a dedicated server. Oh, I've got ClamWin, but it's not
actually installed - I'm just using one of the DLLs and the virus db to
scan email attachements on the way through.
I've recently started using ghostwall (firewall). Likely unnecessary as
I'm behind a commercial-quality firewall, but ghostwall is very
lightweight and very configurable. I'm not sure I'd recommend it to a
tyro though, as it does assume you know exactly what you are doing.
Free, though...

Really? Hmmm...I don't see why an antivirus should do anything to WOL
but that's good to know.

I have tried NOD32 but WOL stops functioning and because I don't want
to run up/down two stairs to turn on my computer I decided NOD32,
although a very good product, does not work for me.

Long discussion about a problem with AlienBBC here:

Possible fix for you towards the end.

Re: [slim] What anti-virus/firewall protection program

2008-04-25 Thread dsendecki

I'm using McAfee — just one small issue, otherwise working okay. McAfee
prevents SC from writing some files to the disk. VirusScan is the
culprit.

To solve this problem, I set my it to scan executables and documents
only. Alternatively, you can tell McAffee to ignore MYI file
extensions.

>From the VirusScan Console: "All Processes > Detection > Exclusions >
Add".

Type in the file extensions, ie MYI, and you are good to go. Scans
should complete no problem.

A little late but a fourth vote for ESET, although I use their combined

Re: [slim] What anti-virus/firewall protection program

OK, I just trusted 3 total strangers . . . :)

But most importantly I was able to talk to a live body at eset who
answered all my install and compatibility questions. He even knew
about slimdevices.

eset even has phone tech support and a user forum. I told him to be
sure their product mgr had this info for their competitive analysis.
Products are only as good as the idiot installing and maintaining
them.

Thanks for your help.

Yet another vote for NOD32. No issues whatsoever with the Cisco VPN
client. However, if you also need to employ a third-party firewall -
disable client's built-in firewall, or you might get conflicts.

[slim] What anti-virus/firewall protection program

2008-04-24 Thread SadieKate

plays well with the Duet?

I was about to buy Kaspersky and then searched this forum . . . so
maybe not. But my experience with AVG doesn't bode well. I can't
actually find proof on their site that you can contact them in any way
but through email (unless you live in the UK) and since it took their
sales department 4 business days to give me a stupid response that
would be grounds for reprimand at my company, I'm not sure AVG is the
way to go. I'm not a techie so I have to have access to phone or live
chat support, or take far too much advantage of friends.

Here are companies I'm starting to research.
http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

I need to license software for two computers and would like something I
can immediately download (or purchase locally) and then purchase a
backup CD. Having been burned by Symantec because they always insist
that I have a CD or I downloaded the software when in each case it was
the opposite, they're off my list permanently. One computer will use
Cisco VPN if that makes a difference.

Thanks.
