Re: [slim] iPhone 7
But for all other applications: since in most applications you are using class-D amps anyway these days you can do away with a lot of lossy analog signal handling if you go digital these days. In the past the limiting factor was the need for a digital deceive creating the input bitstream for the amp but today this is so cheap and power efficient it's really the way you want to go. Especially since you can program that to double as a digital filter to adapt to the speaker's transmission curve, something you'd otherwise do with expensive, power consuming and tolerance-challenged analog filters. --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 9, the Universal App for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch* pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106101 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] iPhone 7
Yes. Saves a lot of power compared to DAC+amp which is pretty important on mobile. That said... It performs better if you can adapt the filter used to the (known) speaker so it's a more likely candidate for built-in speakers and digital headphones. For the adapter I'm wondering whether you really need an amp or whether a DAC can simply take the current needed (and provided by the phone). Then you could just have only a DAC...

However, they aren't removing analogue, just the headphone jack. When you plug the supplied Lightning headphones into the iPhone 7 they'll be supplied with analogue signals over the Lightning interface. There is no DAC and electronics in the Lightning headphones they supply. There are DAC equipped Lightning headphones out there, but you can still have plain old analogue over Lightning (and could do before the iPhone 7). You can also do analogue over Lightning, while also charging the phone, but sadly not with the adapter that Apple are providing in the box. Yes, it will. Yes, all of them. Yes, SoftSqueeze as well. Details were released yesterday. It has no headphone socket! I listen to my music using iPeng on an iPod Touch, an iPad and my iPhone 6 as well as my SB hardware and Pi's. I actually use the iPhone and a pair of B&W P7s as much as any other configuration as SWMBO watches a lot of TV. The later iThingy's have really quite good DACs and with iPeng is able to stream my FLACs at a sufficiently high level of fidelity.
