Re: [slim] iPod Touch or iPhone to control music server

2009-09-18 Thread pacc

Wikipedia has correct info on speed:

# CPU: Initially ARM 400 MHz, but now 412 MHz for 1st generation, 533
MHz [1] for 2nd Generation and ARM Cortex-A8 833 MHz underclocked to
600MHz for 3rd Generation .
# GPU: PowerVR MBX Lite in 2nd Generation[28] and PowerVR SGX GPU for
3rd Generation[citation needed]
# RAM: 128 MB DRAM in 2nd Generation and 256 MB DRAM in 3rd Generation

You only gain 60 MHz going from 2nd to 3rd generation,
though OpenGL intensive apps will gain a lot more with higher speed and
2.0 compatibility, which of course don't matter to iPeng.

I'm looking at getting a used Ipod Touch 8G now when ppl are upgrading
- sorry but no jive software wonder in the world would make me jump to a
proprietary controller when you can get touch web browsing...

It seems that the Controller UI DOES get an overhaul with SC 7.4. Yay, I
was wrong!
Tested it and like it so far. :)

Not much issue with speed even with 1G 32GB Touch upgrade to firmware
3.0 (supposed to be more resource hungary).

However I have ordered a 3G Touch since I gave my 1G away. We'll see

Has anyone really noticed speed issues with the Touch 2G? I can't say I
have gobs of experience, but on the few occasions I've used IPeng on my
daughter's IPod it seemed just as fast as using the IR remote. Speed is
more dependent on SC than the remote, or so it seems to me.

Yes, the iPod Touch 2G is actually a tiny bit faster than iPhone 2G/3G.

Re: [slim] iPod Touch or iPhone to control music server

2009-09-10 Thread signor_rossi

I thought as much, since the lowest model is dispatched immediately and
the others take 5 working days. BTW, is there a difference in processing
power between an iPod 2G and an iPhone 1G (which my brother has and I am
testing iPeng with) ? My server is fast enough, but I have it clocked at
the lowest frequency atm, will test if album artwork is showed faster if
I allow him to clock faster.

Re: [slim] iPod Touch or iPhone to control music server

2009-09-10 Thread pippin

I can't tell whether it will make a difference, my 3g touch only arrives
next week.
Btw, the 8GB models are still 2G.

That said: if you want a faster iPeng, take the cheapest iTouch and
invest in a faster server. As on my experience speed is more dependent
on server performance. There may be a few UI things that may become
faster with a faster iPod but you have to be aware that iPeng (and
Squeemote, too, btw) are nowhere near as slow as the web interface.

I am also looking at purchasing a touch. The third generation of ipod
touch has just been released. Will the increase in processor speed make
any significant difference for its use with ipeng? Is an 8 gb touch
sufficient?

pippin-

i make trackstat playlists by navigating to a artist and holding down
the play button for a few seconds. i then have the option of selecting:
musicIP mix or trackstat mix (based on the list of trackstat
possibilities which is long). often times I like to play top rated
tracks by artist or tracks that haven't been played recently.

How do you navigate there using the remote? If this in the context menu
or something?
I mean: MusicIP is in the TrackInfo menu but TrackStat?

Re: [slim] iPod Touch or iPhone to control music server

i highly recommend buying an itouch for controlling your squeezeboxes. I
use the touch almost exclusively as a controller.

I also use ipeng and find it very good.

fyi- a couple things that I use the squeeze remote for instead of
ipeng:
making musicip mixes- it has always seemed clunky to do this in ipeng.
making mixes based on trackstat-also a matter of being hard to navigate
in ipeng.

best of luck!

Hm. I believe there are good desktop applications as well, for example
Moose (which caches the library, too).
I believe you do want a different interface on the desktp because you
don't have to optimize as much for available space.

You should see the one on the upcoming new iPeng release :-)

Re: [slim] iPod Touch or iPhone to control music server

2009-09-10 Thread b33k34

I've been using iPeng for a while but Squeemote looks good as well.

Squeezecenter itself is starting to look like a weak link in the chain
now. The responsiveness and ease of use of iPeng (and even more so from
Squeemote) makes Squeezecenter's interface look a poor relation.

Is there any way these iPhone apps could be adapted for desktop use (at
least on Apple hardware)? Surely the major work has been done - these
apps are caching the library and artwork and delivering it quicker than
the web interface does.

For example I've always found Sync to be confusing and hard to find
whether by remote or web app but the sync interface of Squeemote looks
the business.
