Re: [slim] iTunes to sell DRM-free 256 kbps AAC
>I hope Slim Devices choses to support non-DRM ACC files. >Yes, they do, through transcoding. I'm wondering why this is such a problem? Good question. AAC is supported through transcoding. In a typical SlimServer + SB scenario transcoding works well and there is no problem. AAC support in firmware is needed when you want to avoid transcoding. For example when SlimServer is setup on a NAS or the music is stored online ( Oboe Locker ). Someone could argue that these are very specific scenarios and that number of users interested in the requested enhancement is tiny. However, since both WMA and OGG support was added to the firmware in the past, there is still hope that this will be addressed in the future... -- shvejk shvejk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1337 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34130 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I've got a large iTunes library, now outdone by CD's ripped by me. I hope Slim Devices choses to support non-DRM ACC files. Of course I have no idea how many of my 2,000 iTunes songs come under the new agreement with EMI, or if any other companies will go along with this. -- Jazz1 Jazz1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6623 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34130 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I am not asking for the free formats to be removed. It is great that they are supported. This is about making the great player even better and attracting new customers. Similar arguments had been made before wma support was added to the player firmware. Today we can clearly see that it was a great decision. Pandora, Rhapsody, SN support of many internet radio stations, all made possible because of that. > Indeed, why would anyone have chosen a proprietary format over a free > one in the first place- oh yeah, those Ipods are s cute! iTunes customer base is huge, if you like it or not. Re: [slim] iTunes to sell DRM-free 256 kbps AAC
It -would- be nice to see AAC decoded in the box. If this is not already a priority, the EMI/iTunes DRM decision ought to tip the scales. The Wikipedia link addresses streaming and distribution, but not -decoding-. Is a license required to distribute an AAC decoder? Apple didn't create AAC and doesn't own it, they simply use it in iTunes and on the iPods. Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Advanced_Audio_Coding#Licensing_and_patents for some of the details. Re: [slim] iTunes to sell DRM-free 256 kbps AAC
You can't have AAC support in firmware because slimdevices hasn't paid Apple for a license. That's one of the prices you pay for adopting a proprietary format. Now if you wanted to pay an extra chunk of money to Slimdevices so they could pay a licensing fee to Apple, you might get somewhere. On the other hand, why should Slimdevices put themselves at a competitive disadvantage price-wise in order to support a proprietary format when there are great, free, lossless formats such as flac available? Indeed, why would anyone have chosen a proprietary format over a free one in the first place- oh yeah, those Ipods are s cute! Will Slimdevices make enough money selling more SBs to apple fans who made the mistake of investing large sums into proprietary format libraries to offset the loss of customers due to increased price of the SB? Will apple license AAC decoders or will they keep their flock penned securely in the Apple hardware corral?
