Mark,

I haven't tried that but am seriously considering
http://www.timdorr.com/syko86/ycsoft/hostssecure.htm which is recommended on
the host site. This program holds the file open so that virus/spyware etc
cannot change the hosts file themselves.

Heh heh...great minds think alike...I've been
using the MVPS HOSTS file for years now.

Actually I'm using it in conjunction with their
great HOSTS File Manager app:

even better than a nice clean hosts file is the one at

this contains blocks of lots of spyware and nasty sites as well as the correct
loop back

I reccomend this to everyone I know because it speeds up browsing and stops a

Re: [slim] HELP! SQ3 won't connect to Slimserver

2006-01-13 Thread Mark Lanctot
Your first problem is related to your firewall
configuration - others have offered suggestions.

But this second problem is puzzling. Since
SlimServer will always try to call up
localhost:9000, you will always have to change it.

Therefore there seems to be something wrong with
the resolution of local names to internal IP
addresses on your PC.

Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc. Go to
Tools - Folder Options - View - Show hidden files
and folders. You should see a file called HOSTS,
with no extension. Open it using notepad. There
should be a blurb from Microsoft in there, and a
single line:

127.0.0.1 localhost

This tells your PC that "localhost" means
"127.0.0.1", which is a loopback address telling
the PC to look back on itself.

If the HOSTS file is missing or if it does not
contain that line, let me know and I'll send you a
clean HOSTS file. Since this can represent a
security exploit (hackers can redirect common
sites to their own malicious sites) I will take
measures to ensure that it is not altered - for
anyone interested, I'll give the MD5 checksum, and
the content will be nothing more than the
Microsoft notice and the 127.0.0.1 line.

localhost *ought* to workalways but (on a Mac) I have occasionally
had trouble with it.

A statci IP address is not a bad idea, anyway.

Instead of localhos you could try 127.0.0.1, which should always work.
