If it is pulling the music over the internet then you are introducing many more variables than you would have if you were on a network. Ignoring upload and download bandwidth on the connections you also have contention ratios (at least you do in the UK with ADSL) you have the packets routing between service providers, or at the very least through a providers network. Also bear in mind that the display for the unit is being driven by the server as well, so not only is the music taking bandwidth, the player/server communications are as well. I have no idea what the overhead for this is, but I would assume it would be significant on anything lower than basic Ethernet speeds.
