Whoa. It's their decision. Ease up.

It's probably not an attractive proposition, running such a board.
It's real work. In comparison, the rest of these forums require
virtually no maintenance. Although it would be a nice gesture to offer
the community such a resource, they're obviously not obliged to do it.

Sales boards on a site like this tend to get few postings. There are
generally better places to sell gear. Even Squeezeboxes are likely to
fetch more if you take the time to list them on eBay and sell them to a
complete stranger. But it can be a lot easier and more enjoyable to
sell a piece of gear to someone you've known for several years in a
community like this one.

Fully support the idea of the separate forum. Anything tied to
slimdevices - based on common sense. I'll be in market for the DAC, and
I'd much rather buy it from somebody like pfarrell, then go trough the

A for sale forum could be divided into categories.

Squeezebox

Transporter

Dacs

Computer products for use with SB and TP eg. routers, servers etc.

This could rule out speakers, cabling, amps etc.

Seems workable to me.

A For Sale forum? Why not.

Rules? Sure, there need to be rules.

How about several forums - Slim Devices hardware, related-audio hardware
(DACs, amps, speakers, whatever), 3rd-party hardware (NAS, Linkstations,

Re: [slim] How about a for sale section

2007-07-21 Thread JJZolx

From a community standpoint, I think it's a good idea. It wouldn't harm
sales in any way... If someone wants to sell a Squeezebox, they're going
to sell it somehow. The forum would just make it convenient to
community members.

You'd need some fairly clear rules and there would be some inevitable
moderation, including the locking and deletion of threads. I would
hope that's OK with everyone and doesn't raise the censorship debate
once again. But the forum won't be for discussion, so it should be
fine.

I would suggest permitting the sale of anything audio, as well as
pretty much anything computer networking related. Again, as a
convenience (service?) to community members. Want to sell a wireless
router that someone else could use? Perfect place for it.

I would also suggest that users _not_ be permitted to post links to
eBay auctions or to listings on other for-sales sites such as Audiogon.
Require a full item description and a clearly stated price (with or
without OBO) for all items appearing in listings.

I'm not sure I agree with anything audio. Altho Selling my MegaDollar
turntable because I love my SqueezeBox would be OK with me.

I had not considered anything computer or network related since that
is too broad, IMHO. I sure don't want to see old laptops, or generic
obsolete desktop PCs. Its a gray area. Which is bad.

For example, to me, it would be OK to sell a used P3 desktop setup with
SlimServer but not a plain used P3 desktop

I'd want it more restricted than Jim suggests, it has to be SqueezeBox
or Transporter related. Which would allow Benchmark (or Larvy) DAC,
replaced it with a Transporter, wonderful with a SqueezeBox.

Linear powersupply for SB would be fine with me. $2000 interconnects
is marginal. PC audio speakers, list for $10, $2 OBO may get an award
for chutzpah, but the listing is just wasted bandwidth.

Its such a slippery slope. Perhaps this will end up being unworkable.

Re: [slim] How about a for sale section

I'd hate to see this forum turn into a market. This forum is for
discussion, not private enterprise. The internet is too clogged up now
with people trying to sell something to someone. Keep Slim Devices
forum free of that stuff, please.

A discreet For Sale subforum would bring the occasional For Sale
posts in General Discussion there and out of General Discussion - not
that there's rampant misuse of For Sale posts that I can see. If
they're unrelated spam, they get deleted and banned fast - within
minutes in most cases.

I can remember discussions of the commercialization of the Internet
back in 1992 when I first discovered it. It seemed a bad thing back
then and it's now far worse than anyone could have imagined back then.
Believe me, I go to great lengths to block ads and I hate commercials
more than most. But I don't see that happening here, and I think a
For Sale subforum would be a good idea if Logitech wasn't concerned
about it affecting sales of new product.

Maybe a forum to announce items going on Ebay?

Sounds like a good idea but I'm wondering if it would cannibalize sales?
Why buy a new one when you can buy a used one, and the bandwidth is
paid for by the company that builds and sells the new ones on the same
 site.

Bandwidth is cheap.
Not that many 2nd hand SB's are offered here or on E-bay.
A separate section makes sense.

Yes, it would be nice to have a community away from eBay where you
wouldn't have to compete with L@@K GREAT KOSS CD PLAYER LIKE
SLIM DEVICES SQUEEZEBOX!! when you enter a search term.

A active market for 2nd devices is a great incentive foir buying a new
one. You can see that you can always sell it for a good price if you
change your mind. SB's hold their value pretty well...

Peter
