I seriously doubt it.
The consumers you're talking about buy into high-end buds and hi-res
streaming because they believe it's what they should do, but they
wouldn't recognise good sound quality if it smacked them in the mouth.
Indeed, they are now so used to hypercompressed trash that it's what
they think good sound quality is.
Even today's crop of young mastering engineers seem to have drunk the
kool-aid. "Everything louder than everything else" is the new dogma.

No it isn't a Tidal issue just the sad truth that the only versions
available on any streaming service tend to be the latest ones. It is
hard to tell if this version is a remix or a remaster but either way,
changing the overall volume of a track halfway through seems a very odd
decision to make. The only Genesis albums available seem to be the
latest remixes and they get widely criticized as well.

That’s not down to Tidal though is it? It’s the label releasing a poor
digital remastering and probably applies to the same ELP album streamed
from elsewhere.
I can see the take up of FLAC streaming causing a reversal of the
“loudness war” to some extent as even the buds brigade now often opt for
high end ones. Hopefully the labels will revert to more dynamic
mastering going forward.

Same here. It means that you're not so tied to a Spotify 'library' or
playlists. I just migrated from Spotify to Qobuz, most of my Spotify
'library' came ver as Favourites in Qobuz.

Back to the original topic regarding Neil Young's reaction to Joe
Regan.

What's just happened is a good demonstration of why people shouldn't
rely on streaming services as their music source. Anyone who gets their
music from Spotify and likes to listen to Neil Young (and maybe Joni
Mitchell soon) is hosed. Unless you have the music in your possession,
there's no telling when it might just disappear.

Re: [slim] Neil Young at it again

2022-01-31 Thread scslite

Good riddance i say! Spotify is slowly losing market share to others
and this definitely won't help. Being an audiophile they have the worse
sound quality in my opinion. Moved to Tidal, then once Tidal changed
their service tiers, and since I could care less about MQA i've moved to
Qobuz. For now Qobuz hits the spot for me. Not he greatest UI and much
to improve with their algorithm but I had migrated all the
albums/playlists I've amassed for years from the other platforms so all
that work wasn't lost. Most importantly is it integrates with LMS
nicely even better than Tidal.

Also, Spotify's announcement of their HiFi service over a year ago that
was to be released in 2022 and not a peep as the year goes by? Yup,
they could care less about a niche group of audiophiles out there.

No, but the difference is evident. I'm listening to songs I've heard

Not only that, but you also have to be sure that you are listening to
the same mastering/mix. Very often that is not the case and than you are
comparing apples & oranges, or from another perspective: in that case
you simply don't know what might be the reason for the songs to sound
different. It can be anything.

I have pretty much switched to Qobuz now. I cancelled my Spotify Premium
subscription (current sub expires 22.2.22 I believe), that took 4
confirmations that is what I wanted to do! Apparently fully deleting
your details involves what looks like an unsatisfying conversation with
a ChatBot. Removing the Spotify app for devices one by one.

Here's an' interesting table of payments by stream'

Joni Mitchell has also requested that her songs are removed from
Spotify. I have a couple of her albums in my library "Clouds" and
"Ladies of the Canyon". I notice those two albums and probably more are
not listed in her Spotify discography but can be found by a search. They
also only contain three or four playable tracks with the rest greyed
out. I am fairly certain all the tracks were available previously so
presuming that Spotify have not yet taken any action to remove her
albums what is going on?

It's ear-opening listening to Qobuz and Tidal through a stereo pair of
original Apple Homepods (Airplay Bridge) and a Velodyne subwoofer
(Airport Express + Airplay Bridge). Haven't tried my Duet feeding ADS
M15s via Tandberg pre and power amps yet.

Spotify quality was pretty good, but listening to these services, it
seems there's much greater space and detail to be heard in the same
music I'd been listening to via the Spotty plugin in LMS.

I've a month to decide between Qobuz and Tidal. It's a close call,
after a single afternoon's listening, in reproduction quality. Either
is a distinguishable improvement to these ears.

Earlier today I was looking at a thread where people were remembering
their past where they themselves fell for some of the audio magic. Like
green markers on CDs and even a Linn turntable if I remember correctly.

It is like the joke about St. Patrick returning late to heaven. St.
Peter confronts him to which St. Patrick says "Peter,
Cockle-doodle-doo."

We should assume Neil was misinformed. We have all been there and at
least did not put everyone's health at risk.

I almost spit out my beer. :p You're correct. I love Neil, have read
his books (and love the biography, Shakey), bought most of his music,
subscribe to his web archive, etc. But I always complained to my also
big Neil fan friend that Neil was way off the mark on his explanation of
"lossy" music. But Neil has me buying 24/192 versions of downloads from
his site. (I'd prefer a 16/44.1 version, but its simply not available.)
Oh well. Gotta love Neil.

p.s. the "making of Barn" video, which recently was available free on
YouTube is really nice. Old friends making music in a cool place.
