It doesn't have to be silent if you put it in the right place. With
ethernet and remote desktop apps there's no real reason to have it in
 your
listening room, unless you're going to use the video output too.

That's my philosophy. It can be as noisy as necessary as long as it's
far away. Video is no problem either. I use a pair of A/V over CAT5
baluns to transfer the video and audio signals to my cable cabinet where
an injector merges the signal with the rest of my TV cable channels. I
have total silence in my listening/watching places.

Via Epia 5000 (fanless 500MHz)
Seagate 250GB
DC-DC power supply /w external AC-DC brick
stuffed into a custom made plexi chassi hidden behind my sofa,
running Trustix Secure Linux and doubles as smtp/imap/http/mysql/slimserver-box.

might be a tad slow during scanning, but it's SILENT!

overcome noises, heat and energy efficiency.

Re: [slim] Write down your slim box NOT NAS

2006-08-10 Thread Jacob Potter

My SlimServer is also my main desktop:

- Athlon 64 X2 4600+
 - Scythe SCNJ-1000 heatsink
 - Yate Loon D12SL-12 fan in top of case; speed-controlled via motherboard
- GeForce 7800GT
 - Zalman ZM80D-HP / ZM80D-IK1 heatsink
 - Yate Loon D12SL-12 fan, blowing across heatsink; wired to 5 volts
- Samsung Spinpoint 200gb hard drive
 - Soft-mounted with rubber grommets
- Antec Phantom 500W fanless power supply
 - Vantec Stealth 80mm fan, wired to 5 volts, cooling hard drive and PSU
- Abit AN8-SLI motherboard (fanless heatpipe cooling)
- 2GB DDR400 RAM
- NEC ND-3540A DVD burner
- Debian Sid

It's incredibly quiet; the fans are all under 800 RPM when the CPU is
idling (with Cool'n'Quiet). I haven't measured the power consumption
since I replaced the processor (used to be a single-core 3500+),
though.

Advantages: extremely quiet, extremely fast
Disadvantages: expensive, absurdly heavy, nowhere near portable

At some point I'd like to get rid of the hard drive and move it to a
file server in the basement; either I'll do diskless boot (with a
dedicated GigE link), or get some sort of hardware ramdisk.
