Re: [discuss] data base in OOo2?

Away from the control panel I don't see any substancial difference with the
1.1.4 version. Can someone shed some explanation of some 'real' changes (on the
UI) on OOoBase from 1.x to 2.x?

[Pre criticism disclaimer - I LIKE Open Office a lot and appreciate all the
work done on it]

for once I think following the Microsoft model is a bad idea

The Lotus Approach database - though not so well updated as MS - is better and
more user friendly in its interface - and also uses multiple database formats

Why is more difficult to answer - I simply find it more intuitive (though it
needs learning) It has also been possible to obtain it much more cheaply too
which has helped.

I believe that the next version (5.x) of mysql will have both views
and stored procedures.

MySQL/PostgreSQL are natural partners for OO.o for medium sized databases
but we did need something for smaller scale "my mailing list" sized databases
which don't require many features.

The again to be honest we still havent have a 'stable' implementation of the
native database format into the OpenOffice.org GUI.

Also MySQL products lack things that Access has like 'Views', while Oracle and
PostgreSQL have stored process that are not supported by the GUI.

Access is also a very unique database since they don't manage Unix dates so
their time format is just shared with MS SQL Server, every other database has
the standard -MM-DD which also cause some problems

I was testing the UI and I also found a very basic incompatibility with the
MySQL database which is the 'Limit' option. this is a very basic command which
I found surprisingly missing when running it on the UI of the db.

I do want to ask more people to beta test the OOoBase specially if they have the
resources to have an Oracle/PostgreSQL/SQL Lite/Firebird database.

This is very vague. Can you elaborate on exactly what is wrong with it and
what should be different?

Suppose for example that you are making a software product. Someone comes
in and says "your product is not very good, can you make it better?". Now,
how would you respond to this person?1

I thought OOoBase was much superior to MS Access. For example, OOo Base
has the ability to connect to 12 different databases out of the box (e.g.
MySQL, Oracle) and many more thorugh other interfaces. By comparison MS
Access is just one database. We do have a database engine called HSQLDB
which provides a fuctionality vs ease of use tradeoff that is comparable
to that of Access. But if you wish for a different tradeoff (e.g. MySQL)
you can do that.

[discuss] data base in OOo2?

2005-04-06 Thread bealach
Hello,
I've been reading the news on PC World about the addition of a database
in Ooo2.

However if the PC World review of Oo2 beta is right the database is very
much like M$ Access which PC World claims is not very good and users
don't like it very much.

Well, OOo writer is much better than M$Word for instance so wouldn't it
possible to make a great data module, even if it can't be ready for Ooo2
final release? -- can't users wait patiently until one is ready, rather
than get something that isn't as good as the rest of Ooo (Ooo drawing is
amazing too).

Please don't see this message as a troll or anything aggressive. I'm a
fan of Ooo. :-)

Cheers
bealach
