[discuss] MS Office plugin?

2006-10-19 Thread Bojan Stojanovic
Hello guys,

Why don't developers make some plugin for MS Office so it could open
*.odt and other OpenOffice files?

It's a problem, when someone make and send *.otd file in a e-mail, when
receipent doesn't have OpenOffice installed.
Often a receipent don't know or doesn't want to install OpenOffice suite
so he could open OpenOffice files (*.odt for example)
So our OpenOffice document creator is forced to save it in a *.doc
format so receipent could read it...
OpenOffice *.doc is not 100% compatible with MS Office *.doc so our MS
Office receipent often sees OpenOffice *.doc with some formatting
errors.

New MS Office 2007 has a new *.docx format which OpenOffice cannot open.

This problems maybe could be solved by making an plugin for MS Office
which would enable MS Office to open OpenOffice formats.
Our MS Office receipent then would install tiny plugin and could open
OpenOffice sender's file with no problem.
Sender could even send this plugin in attachent.

Think about it.

Actually MS is in the process of doing this now. The reader filter
should be available before Xmas from what I have been reading. It
shouldn't be that hard for MS software writers as there is documentation
for all the coding available without having to jump through the hoops
that MS makes others go through for their documentation.

Maybe MS is trying hard to find a way to make the conversion not work as
expected and cover their tracks at the same time. Of course they are
using an outside agency to write the code.

There is a plugin for viewing ODF files in a browser. I don't have the
link.

That pretty much is what one can conclude, after reading the groklaw
article on the Microsoft plugin.
