Oh and Martin, that is not to say you can't make a 3D printer, make it!
MAKE TEN! I'm just offering suggestions.

laser cutting would be awesomeness as well. I have been collecting heavy duty

At codemash, 8-12 Parrot AR Drone 2.0's were brought in and we wrote
javascript code to maneuver the drones. IT WAS AWESOME!

Also, a friend from progressive brought his arducopter - he didn't demo it,
but his build was impressive. Cost him over $1000 to build as he wanted to
build it his way. It was radio controlled and had a range in miles, had
led's he bought at ingenuity fest from the led guys that had nicer leds.

I'd say it would be great to build custom drones, and 3D printers at the
space. Great idea Martin!

I for one would like to understand how these motors work .. I'm completely
uninformed on the topic of moving things around.

You know you're an internet veteran when you know that the background
music is either some sort of crap EDM at 96kbps or Bodies by Drowning Pool.

Oh, and I like the idea of a laser cutter.

We still have a ton of Blu-Ray laser optics from busted PS3 drives, as well
as their motors. Since Synhak already has a 3D printer, what about the
beginnings of a laser cutter? It can only cut paper and maybe some other
thin materials but it would be a great proof of concept and maybe evolve
later on to a more powerful version.

[SH-Discuss] future possibilities

2014-01-21 Thread Martin Pinkston
Sunday when we were moving, I dropped off an old dialysis machine for
hacking. There is another one at my house waiting for me to get loaded onto
the truck and drop this one off as well.
In order to allow these into the hacking space, I have agreed to disable
them from ever being used as a dialysis machine again. This is due to some
liability issues with the company I work for. I may have two more machines
available in the near future. It just depends.
However, there are a couple of things I would like to do with some of the
parts I have removed. Each machine has 3 small stepper motors, just like
the ones on the 3-D printer. Each printer takes 4. The machines also have 4
out runner motors which are the size that 600 size RC helicopters are
using.
The first thing I would like to do is make a 3-D printer. The second thing
I would like to do is make a quad copter with the out runner motors.
I am curious if any one else might be interested in also building a 3-D
printer as maybe a group project; meaning, each person in the group is
actually building a 3-D printer. So if there are 4 of us in this group,
there will be four 3-D printer completed and running at the end of the
project. And the same would be true of the Quad copter project group.
Is there any interest in something like this???
