Mila site

2010-09-26 חוט E L
Hi,
I don't know how many of you remember the great promise that was Mila.
They took hspell dictionary and promised fully GPLed lexicon and fully
GPLed analyzer.
Now everything disappeared from their site, they claim full copyright
over the lexicon
and nothing is being released.
I think getting the lexicon code at least can be an interesting test
case for hamakor.
Beside the obvious breaking of GPL for a few years, there is more the
ethical part.
The project was funded by the ministry of science, and was advertised
on papers as free.

Anyone got an idea what can we do about it?

Hi Ely,

It took me a while to find the website you're referring to:
http://www.mila.cs.technion.ac.il/

From a quick browse it seems that most (if not all) of the programs are
GPLed, but aren't available for download without a registration. This seems
quite legitimate.

I didn't find any options to register except for the Corpora.

Did you try to mail them at m...@cs.technion.ac.il ?

I was looking all over for one.
And how does one register? It's only legit if everyone can easily register.

I tried a while ago but wasn't so successful.
I think also Dotan tried and didn't get too much out of them.
It's not that they don't answer they just politely decline.

Well, that's a problem.

We can't force them into giving us the product (binary or code), and unless
we know what exactly do they distribute we can't verify if the uphold the
GPL.

Any better ideas ?

From a purely GPL perspective, that is not true. It is perfectly okay
for me to create a GPL program, and only give it to people who give me
money, so long as those people receive the program under the terms of
the GPL.

Did you find out how much is a license? If it's truly under the GPL,
Hamakor can buy one copy and make it public.

i tried to send the mail too but was declined, so i checked the
automated mail i got, and it said the following

I will be out of office between 1/11/2007-18/11/2007.
Your mail concerning =?UTF-8?Q?=D7=A9=D7=99=D7=9E=D7=95=D7=A9?=
will be read when I'm back.

pay attention to the date writen there, its about 3 years ago...
thus i beleive its outdated and at least possibly done with no bad
intentions, if there is some one that can try to contact Dalia Bojen
directly in the technion to see whats going on it will be perfect.

by the way, the same doctor Dalia Bojen that developed some of the
programs in the site doesn't work there any more.
