[Distutils] PyCon US 2020 Packaging Summit: Registration and Topic Proposal

2020-02-19 Thread Paul Ganssle
/Cross-posting this announcement to both distutils-SIG and discourse.
The main discussion thread should be on the discourse
./

Greetings one and all,

Though each of us cuts our own path through the harrowing jungle that is
the days of our lives, we are all inevitably drawn closer and closer to
a single fate; yes, of course I am talking about PyCon 2020’s Packaging
Summit! April is looming on the horizon, threatening to take us
unawares, but we are a crafty sort, and have prepared to meet its ambush
with a secret weapon: DILIGENT PREPARATION AND SPREADSHEETS!

In my last announcement, I asked that you save the date: *Thursday,
April 16, 2020*, but provided you no other action items. I am now coming
to you with TWO actions that you can take. /If you don’t know what the
packaging summit is, please see the website for more details
./

 1. *Register*! This year we will be collecting registration ahead of
time, and like the Language Summit we will be curating the list of
attendees to try and maximize the effectiveness of the limited time
we have for these discussions. In addition to people actually
working on packaging tools, we’re also looking to see people with
many different perspectives participating in the discussions, so if
you are on the fence as to whether or not you qualify but you’re
interested in participating, please register.

You can register at http://bit.ly/python-packaging-summit-2020-reg

Registration is open /now/ and we will close the registration form on
*March 7th, 2020*. All registration decisions should be finished by
*March 15th, 2020*.

 2. *Propose topic for discussion*! In previous years, topics were
proposed in the room or ahead of time on discourse. This year, we’ll
be collecting discussion topics with something closer to a private
Call for Proposals, and then releasing all the discussion topics for
public voting at the same time. We’ll be doing it this way to
prevent biasing certain selections based on their position in the
voting list or length of time available to be voted on.

Topic suggestions will be evaluated independent of the submitter; please
propose any topic you would like to see discussed — you don’t have to be
the driver of an idea to propose it. We will schedule about 5 minutes at
the beginning of each discussion period for someone to give a quick
introduction to the topic. By default the person (or people) who
proposed the topic will be responsible for either giving that
introduction or delegating the task to someone else, but if one of your
proposals was selected and you cannot present or find someone to
present, the organizers will find someone to give the introduction.

You may find the topic proposal form at
http://bit.ly/python-packaging-summit-2020-topics

Topic proposal is open /now/ and will close on *March 7th, 2020*. Topic
voting is expected to run from March 9th - March 30th.

This and other information is available at our website:
https://us.pycon.org/2020/hatchery/packaging/

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to respond on the
discourse

or to contact me or one of the other organizers.

[Distutils] PyCon US Packaging Mini Summit

2019-04-25 Thread Pradyun Gedam
A lot of people interested in Python Packaging will be in one place, at
PyCon US this year, and we're planning to utilize this opportunity to
discuss various topics and make progress on them in a Packaging Mini-Summit.

If you'll be at PyCon US 2019 and want to take part in this, please provide
some details about your PyCon attendance at [1].

The exact structure and flow of the Mini-Summit are still under discussion
at [2]. Though not finalized, it will likely include (at least) one open
space and one meeting, likely during the sprints.

Suggestions for topics to be discussed at the Mini-Summit are being
collected at [3], one per post. If you have any suggestions for topics that
should be discussed, please post them there.

[Distutils] PyCon Colombia 2017 keynote on packaging

2017-02-12 Thread David Cournapeau
Hi,

I was invited to give a talk at PyCon Colombia 2017, and I did it on
packaging. I thought people here would be interested to know about it.

I insisted on the need for packaging to get software into as many hands as
possible, gave a history of the packaging ecosystem, advised people to use
packaging.python.org suggestions, and mentioned the manylinux effort. I
tried to be as objective as possible there and mention the key people
involved.

I also talked a bit about what can still be improved, and focused on 3
aspects, none of which are new nor particularly insightful for people here:
infrastructure for automatic wheel building, better decoupling of packaging
and build, and maybe more controversially, the need for tools to remove

Both Friday and Saturday would work for me.

What does it mean concretely to arrange a room ? Just finding out a room

There should be BoF boards up at the venue and we'll grab a slot on one of
those at the earliest opportunity, and post the time here. If we're lucky
the boards will be up during the tutorial time (both Nick and myself will
be around then).

Saturday is also the PyLadies auction.

wasn't inclined to organise it myself this year :)

Open space page is at https://us.pycon.org/2014/community/openspaces/,
but I don't know if Éric already submitted a request for a space.

Also not sure if it would be better to do it before or after Noah's
talk (the advantage of before is we might give him additional ideas,
after is that we can go watch his talk first as a year in review
kind of thing to remind us of how far we've come since this time last
 year)

I still think this is a good idea, but haven’t found time to set things
up. If someone wants to take the idea and run with it, please do so as
soon as convenient!

Noah, maybe we should talk about the talk -- I hope to talk up wheels, for
 example.

Relatedly, is it OK if I ask questions here as part of prepping for said
 talk...?

Absolutely! Your feedback on the discoverability of the new 3.4+ docs
structure would also be greatly appreciated.

Core installation distribution docs:

* http://docs.python.org/3/installing/index.html
* http://docs.python.org/3/distributing/index.html
* http://packaging.python.org/

(I also moved installing to the top of the right hand column in the
main docs index, and the embedding and extending guide down to the
middle)

Binary extension docs:

* http://docs.python.org/3.4/extending/index.html
* https://packaging.python.org/en/latest/extensions.html

It also occurred to me that we don't currently have a great get
involved setup for filling in the wide array of FIXMEs in the main
guide. I just added the guide to the top of the project summary page
at http://packaging.python.org/en/latest/projects.html, so it's a bit
easier to learn that the guide is itself a project people are able to
help with.

Perhaps that's something a sprint could be organised for after PyCon?
(I can see myself wandering between a lot of different sprint rooms at
the rate this is going...)

Cheers,
Nick.

again as an open space, which sounded like a good idea to me, I just
wasn't inclined to organise it myself this year :)

Open space page is at https://us.pycon.org/2014/community/openspaces/,
but I don't know if Éric already submitted a request for a space.

Also not sure if it would be better to do it before or after Noah's
talk (the advantage of before is we might give him additional ideas,
after is that we can go watch his talk first as a year in review
kind of thing to remind us of how far we've come since this time last
year)

Cheers,
Nick.

I'll be there, doing my best to hold up the PyPI / Warehouse banner. And
work on some of the code during the sprints, assuming I don't get
distracted by writing another PEP like last time (but look where that
eventually led us :)

I am most likely going to go to the language summit as a lurker to see if
there's any PyPI-related stuff discussed, but I'm not sure of the actual
value of that.

It sounds like a great crowd! I'm sorry that no one from my group will be
there... :(

We got caught up with other things and then registration filled up...

If anything related to things we've been working on (TUF, etc.) comes up,
feel free to ping us on Skype, etc.

Thanks,
Justin

I'm attempting to give a talk that is supposed to be an outsider's view of
packaging, and I'll be there! Python packaging simplified, for end users,
app developers, and open source contributors
https://us.pycon.org/2014/schedule/presentation/219/

Noah, maybe we should talk about the talk -- I hope to talk up wheels, for
example.

Relatedly, is it OK if I ask questions here as part of prepping for said
talk...?

[Distutils] Distutils Pycon BoF/Sprints : wiki updated

2009-03-28 Thread Tarek Ziadé
Hi

Just a quick note for Pycon/BoF attendees,

I have changed the front page for each major topic we have been
discussed in Pycon

see http://wiki.python.org/moin/Distutils

each page have already a bit of content, or some ideas to work on, and
I am completing them this afternoon.

- DistutilsVersionFight : the goal is to come up with a proposal in
distutils-SIG for version handling
- Distutils/StandardizeEggInfo : the goal is to finalize PEP 376
- Distutils/Metadata : the goal is to finalize PEP 345
- Distutils/StaticMetadata : the goal is to come out with a proposal
to split setup.py into a static metadata file + a lighter, almost
empty script.
- Distutils/Friends : the goal is to try to find a project in each os
community that can manage a third-party tool on the top of Distutils

The next working session is during the BoF tonight at 6 pm. There are
already a lot of proposal going on in the DistutilsVersionFight.

Regards
Tarek

[Distutils] Pycon: Sprint and Panel

2008-11-07 Thread Tarek Ziadé
Hello

I would like to know if people would be interested in some events during Pycon:

- a Sprint for packaging+PyPI matters (already submited)
- a packaging panel during Pyconrelease/distribute a Python
application today, solutions and problems

For the latter, let me know here or in private if you would like to
contribute to that panel
a good panel would probably require os packagers and people from these
two MLs to be involved. If I have enough people interested
I will submit this panel as a proposal for Pycon.

Cheers
Tarek
