Thank you Steve, this is the most beautiful comment we've received so
far. Sorry for the hard wording. Some complexity requires bending the
language. Yes, reading carefully certainly is a key to understand
careful writing. Did you notice an Easter egg somewhere?

https://bxl.dyne.org/media/moments/3-devuan-ci.pdf is more suited for
you: it's PDF so you can adjust it to the size you need, and it appears
on white (and in colors!).

Holy Macaroni, I think you need an IQ of 180 to read the preceding! I
skimmed it and understood most of it, but only because I've been on
this list so long that I've heard all these concepts discussed in terms
I could understand. I think somebody should write a "Cliffs Notes" for
this document, spelling out the central point or concept of each
paragraph in language a seventh grader could understand. So armed,
people of average IQ like me could then comfortably read the real
document.

I have two challenges reading the document: Wording and concepts. A lot
of the words are words I don't readily know the definitions of. Some
are Devuan-proprietary terms that must be defined. Others, in my
personal opinion, might be better changed to simpler, more common
words. Don't get me wrong: The English seems perfect, it's just above
my level and I'd feel more comfortable reading it if I'd been an
English major in college.

The concepts discussed are deep, far reaching, and branch off a long
way from software. I have a feeling that reading this document
carefully would teach me a lot more than software. This is a manifesto.

One practical matter: The

graphic is dysfunctional. Too small to read on the web page, and thanks
to its use of transparency it lacks sufficent contrast to read as its
own page. Add a layer of opaque white below everything else in the
graphic to solve this problem.

[DNG] apt configuration and repositories

2016-12-20 Thread Massimiliano Baldinelli

Hello dng! :)

Since the switch from Stretch to Ascii I noticed the lack of the long
packages descriptions in aptitude, in fact when I did an "aptitude
update" while still in Debian it downloaded, among the other ones, the
Translation-en file. After I made the switch, Translation-en wasn't
downloaded any more.

Following the apt.conf man page I also tried to put

Acquire::Languages { "environment"; "en"; };

in a file under /etc/apt/apt.conf.d, but with no apparent effect... Am I
missing something? Apparently, aptitude is updated:

# apt-cache policy aptitude
aptitude:
  Installed: 0.8.3-1+b2
  Candidate: 0.8.3-1+b2
  Version table:
 *** 0.8.3-1+b2 500
500 http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged ascii/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Poking around /etc/apt the other question came (just my curiosity...
^_^), about the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/devuan.list: what happens
if I uncomment the repository it lists?

Ciao, and keep forking :)

Max.

For those who missed it: everything not in this message was put online
there...

Here's a bit more practical information about the docsprint. A
dedicated team of volunteers who participated in
https://talk.devuan.org/c/devuan/doc-wg made quite some progress on some
aspects of the issue #143. As we were unable to bring people together
physically since our budget was canceled, it's quite an achievement.
Online coordination proved much slower, but as people picked up the
tasks, they could get acquainted with the power of the platform to turn
conversation into drafts and finally into shareable content.

The first page that went online was an update of the list of Devuan
blends (derivative works) at
https://devuan.org/os/partners/devuan-distros, thanks to the fantastic
work of Dev1fanboy (all times favorite Devuan cybrarian) and the people
who made these distributions possible (special thanks to fsmithred for
Refracta!)

We decided that "How to become a Devuan maintainer?" was a wrong
question (Centurion_Dan suggested that an action was more appropriate
than a role) and so Dan and Dev1fanboy (again) worked on clarifying the
processes of "How to Package for Devuan", which will appear shortly on
the site. We hope this will start a new influx of contributors who will
feel welcome to participate in Devuan without having to wait anymore for
some authority to be bestowed on them :)

One of my personal objectives for this docsprint was to revamp the
Continuous Integration schema that illustrates how the development
platform integrates Gitlab, Jenkins, and Amprolla. Doing so was much
fun, and with the help of Centurion_Dan I think the result is one of the
major improvements on the infrastructure documentation. I have a
problem though: I don't know where to put it. So far it appears in the
booklet and in the related talk.do topics. But it should go on the
git.do somewhere and on devuan.org as well.

A lot of pending work remains. You can see our working ground at
https://talk.devuan.org/c/devuan/doc-wg that is now public for all to
see. We could have achieved more, but I think the participants realized
how much we can do together with this platform and the next one will be
easier. But there's absolutely no need to wait for another docsprint to
keep things rolling. Issue #143 is far from complete, and there are
many ways to add a piece to the puzzle.

German, and other translators can take it upon themselves to bring the

you are right in guessing, mirroring the repository is not yet
supported, for the way amprolla works. But its lead dev nextime is
working hard and almost there with version 2.0 of amprolla, which will
support also mirroring in its new course of development. Meanwhile we
have plans in place so that our infrastructure can well carry the load.

once it will be possible to do mirrors of the devuan package overlay,
this will be announced and documented. Many people around here are
asking for this.
