Hallo Nik,

thank you very much for your feedback! I just had started testing it
(with qtox for Linux and trifa for Android) but felt somewhat unsure if
I'd want to "spread the word" due to the quite negative connotation of
the German Wikipedia article [1], and an LWN.net article [2] about some
trouble within the core developing team.

I like the "serverless" p2p concept very much and was impressed how
well it performs - and also of qtox's "feature completeness". As tox
uses common crypto libs (libnacl / libsodium), I hope that the
mentioned security issues have been mitigated - and even if not, I am
confident that a wider use of it will move it more into focus of
possible security auditors.

Best regards and libre Grüße,
Florian

Quoting Hendrik Boom (hend...@topoi.pooq.com):

> Is jitsi the progrm that lets you use facebook messenger from a Linux box?

No. Jitsi Meet (the portion of the Jitsi suite in question) is a
server-end implementation of WebRTC that supports (using JavaScript)
SSL-encrypted videoconferencing from clients on many modern Web browsers
without any other client-end software. Client support is generic, and
not platform-dependent.

Jitsi Meet is an an open source Java program, requiring static IP and a fully
qualified domain name on the server end.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jitsi#Jitsi_Meet
https://myshadow.org/resources/jitsi-meet-chrome-and-chromium
https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/how-to-create-your-own-video-conference-using-jitsi-meet-on-ubuntu-1804/

And this has nothing to do with Facebook Messenger, which is a Facebook,
Inc.-captive secret-sauce proprietary software ecosystem that doesn't
interoperate with other code (except for limited ability to graft on
compatible third-party 'apps' within Messenger). Facebook Messenger
also absolutely requires use of the walled-garden Facebook service.

I have never heard reference to facebook wrt jitsi. If facebook were

I don't think so. Emails document who said what when and are easy to
reference if needed. It is also asynchronous communication. Video is
useless for creating a digital trail and scrollback fades into oblivion
too. For chitchat and real time interactions, video and chat are OK but
will contribute to the end of history and remembering which is a good
thing for those who want us to collectively forget.

Hi Florian!

No irony intended :) I use tox myself for basicly anything that otherwise would
be done face2face. The thing I especially like is that you do not have to
create an account on a centralized server. Just create an ID, send it do
somebody, accept his/her invitation and that's it. I've made a small script
that fires up qTox when I plug in my usb headset :)

@protocol: well, it works. Is it secure? Kind of, did no analysis of it.
Compared to mumble (which I had running 3 years ago) it's fine with low
bandwidth (chat and audio, video is another thing), I can publish a screen or a
defined region as video source (which is great for teaching), and there are no
offline messages (email is for offline).

It has its faults and foibles but I have been using it in a couple of

It does use Mongo for the DB and there is some stuff in the foros &

Online chat/video is a crowded space with everyone jostling for
position and a slice of the action because it will be the eventual

buy up most smaller startups to stop any competition.

I believe the big battle currently is Teams v Slack. M$ are bleeding

the lack of a leading "I" in your statement ("I use...") makes it sound

were updated (and libsystemd0 has been removed); but not calf-plugins.

None of this. I did:

# apt-get dist-upgrade

(as suggested in

easy to install with the quick install guide, but getting video/audio to
work is something i didn't manage.. tried opening all required ports,
but still.. gave it up, cause it was just play... (also because it works

using nextcloud talk atm for personal things, but community version has
some limits.. (max 4-5 people in video chat..).

there are many jitsi meet instances listed here (unofficial list) :

I don't install recommends automatically but that doesn't keep me from
installing them manually ;-P

If you don't like that, chromium --no-sandbox should work as the warning
already told you.

I see that chromium-sandbox doesn't have a Depends: on chromium. That
may be more of an issue as that package is completely useless by itself,
AFAICS at least.

BTW, the details on making it a Recommends: are in

Hope this helps,

I am using a -rt-amd64 kernel (for audio-related needs), so the kernel package
which I am interested to should be: linux-image-4.19.0-8-rt-amd64

I haven't installed it yet because the system is stable and I would like to
avoid problems because I'm using it for remote working. I will update the
kernel during next ween-end...
