[DNG] Cockpit removal might make sense

2021-05-24 Thread Simon Walter

Hi all,

I wanted to see if Cockpit would by some unknown magic run on Devuan.
The reason I wanted to do this is because the packages are available in
the default repos.

After installing it on an fresh Beowulf installation, it does not run
and to my knowledge will never be able to w/o systemd sockets.

So, may I suggest that it is removed from the default repos, as it is
misleading for beginners and may lead to unnecessary bug reports.

IIRC, the policy is not to remove anything related, but use stubs and
let the user deal with half-broken software (ie. GNOME). Cockpit doesn't
(currently) have dependencies on systemd and it's modules, but it
requires a systemd socket to function. So, AFAICT, it is not even
partially usable.

Best regards,

Simon

Yes, but if he does manage, he should be able to program an ebook rader
that does what he wants instead of what the Chinese copany wants.

Early ebook readers from Kobo used a Linux kernel, and could be booted
from an inserted SD card (they had a slot for this). Booting from
inserted SD card was also how they did upgrades. Someone managed to
write a simple game for it, after heavy reverse engineering.

As far as I know no documentation was ever made available for those who
wished to program the thing; in particular, there ws no documebtation
for the screen and touch drivers.

I have seen no such bootable slot in any of the current Kobo ebook
readers.

Somehow, you are still on "testing" instead of "stable" ...

Use "apt update" instead of "apt-get update" ... apt will prompt for you
to agree to switch.

For my clean install of Beowulf, I had to use Expert Mode to get the
EFI boot choice. Having Legacy Mode on or off in BIOS made no
difference.

You also need a dedicated EFI partition (type ef00, EFI System type)
formatted FAT32 mounted on /boot/efi which should show in the installer
partitioner tool. You don't need a dedicated /boot partition. The boot
folder under / is sufficient.

Thoroughly study the install instructions, especially about setting up
efi.

You bet - - - - had it on legacy boot not efi boot.
Changed that and did another install.
At the boot after install - - - oops - - - no joy.

Complaints of no run init: can't execute /sbin/init: no such file or

Now this I have no ideas on how to fix - - - - please advise.

What version(/etc/devuan_version is your system on?

What version did you install?
It sound like you might need to perform a 'sudo apt-get dist
upgrade'.

You have to use the repository that you installed, until you
specifically tell it to jump forward.
are the lines in your /etc/apt/sources.list referencing stable or
one of the versions(jessie, aascii, or beowulf?).

Having a version there is better.

I really think you need to tell us what hardware you're referring to.

As for getting a standard GNU / Linux system onto eBook reader hardware, I
would say:

a) very unlikely, given the storage capacity typically available

b) very disappointing even if you manage, given the performance of eBook
reader CPUs, and especially eInk displays

c) very inconvenient, assuming it's a device with a touch screen and no
Bluetooth or USB OTG mode (which would have enabled you to connect an external
mouse and/or keyboard).

There are, of course, many eBook readers running Android, but that's a far cry
from a full GNU / Linux setup.

A commandline with a file:// reference will just start or switch to
Firefox in the same way that passing a URL will. Firefox would then
perform the action as-appropriate. So if it is given either of

  http://example.com/foo.pdf

or

  file:///path/to/foo.pdf

it will act the same, probably fetching and rendering the PDF inline.

(Although I don't know how, specifically, it loads or caches files from
remote or local sources and if it does it differently for those two
scenarios.)

This is Beowulf, not Chimaera, but Firefox works fine with ALSA here,

The error message is about linux-libc-dev which is at 4.19.181-1 for
Beowulf. So while close, the mirror that your apt-get install used was
out-of-date. Try running `apt-get update` and `apt-get install` again.

You can check

https://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/policy-query.html?c=package=linux-libc-dev

for the available versions. Have a look at each version's sources.list
entry and find one that matches your APT sources.

Hope this helps,

No. This looks like your getting Packages from a mirror that's badly
outdated.

libpcre2-dev has been on 10.x since at least Debian Stretch, so that's
what Devuan ASCII would have. For Beowulf, the version would be 10.32-5
per

  $ apt-cache madison libpcre2-dev
  libpcre2-dev |10.32-5 | http://deb.devuan.org/merged beowulf/main amd64
Packages

Did you run `apt-get update` recently? If so, you should probably fix
your /etc/apt/sources.list to point to

  deb http://dev.devuan.org/merged beowulf main

and add contrib and non-free as necessary.

Hope this helps,
