I run a bunch of ryzen (3700’s IIRR) based machines in our build servers at
work. A cluster for Kubernetes. Main issues are motherboard drivers for things
like NICs and M2/SATA. Squeezed into a 2U case, cooling is interesting too.
While we ended up rolling out ubuntu 20.04, I spent some time evaluating them
on devuan 3. Everything was supported, save the onboard NIC, so ended up
running a pair of low profile cards in each to get LACP to a pair of switches.
We also went with some USB based temp monitoring and fan control units, not
supported on devuan 3 due to libraries, thus ubuntu. Might pay me to go look at
this issue again now I’ve moved machines to devuan 4. The desktop MoBos support
GPU on the CPU, A DVI port is on the MoBo, however that was not in the CPU
model we chose, so ran a low profile GPU instead. Next time I build something
like this, I would rather the GPU be on chip to avoid extra pci-e cards.

Look to the chipset on your MoBo of choice before hand. Hopefully you can avoid
any pain this way in advance =)

Cheers,

Kim

I wondered why I needed nvidia-parsistenced when someone said
thet solved the proboem by doing without it, I decided I could
as well. Deleting the application seems to have done no harm.
Proble not solved but worked around.

Many thanks to all who replied, either on- or off-list, with comments and
observations. Very helpful indeed.

This is a very pleasant community of helpful people with a wide range of
expertise.

I wish you all the best for 2022.

Marjorie, Thanks! I don't know how nvidia-persistenced got (partially)
installed, but see it is optional. Following your advice I simply
deleted it.

I had to deal with what may be the same problem on updating from Ascii
to Beowulf.

The problem I found is caused by the nvidia-persistenced init not
checking for an existing running copy of nvidia-persistenced.

i) if you don't use CUDA then you can simply get rid of nvidia-
persistenced.

ii) if you want CUDA then you can patch /etc/init.d/nvidia-persistenced

My dev1galaxy forum posts might be of some help:

https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?pid=20903#p20903
 - my fixed version of /etc/init.d/nvidia-persistenced.

and
https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?pid=20917#p20917

 - which explains that you can probably also get away with simply
removing or disabling nvidia-persistenced as for most use cases it's
not needed unless you want to use CUDA.

If you can't access these I can send you the patched init.

I have had several instances of this problem. I posted a workaround

https://lists.dyne.org/lurker/message/20210122.105344.eab549d1.en.html

I have been doing this for over a year every time it crops up: the list
of affected packages has grown since that post, and the workaround seems
to be without consequences. Perhaps someone who knows stuff could
comment. There is mention of this issue here:
