Re: [DNG] Website changes

2018-12-25 Thread chillfan via Dng
The contents on github are now slightly behind what we prepared for the website
as the links point to the jessie torrent (I will fix that in the next push
soon). Translations should be in good order aside from that.

Cheers,

[snip the specifics]

This demonstrates how good documentation in the right place can make
software an order of magnitude more user friendly, without dumbing down
the software. This is excellent.

I have a suggestion for the ISO section mid-page on
https://devuan.org/. I think it would be clearer, for the rushed
reader, if you made section "ISO Guide" into an ,and moved
that whole section up to the very top of current section "Get
Devuan". If you don't like having a subservient section header directly
below its parent section header, insert a sentence like "Before listing
the download sources, a word about the different ISO images available
and their uses.". I'm worried that, the way it is now, a rushed reader
might click on a mirror and never see the ISO descriptions.

I wish every software project were as serious about documentation as
Devuan is. This addition is excellent.

Good job! :-)

Thanks.

2) Others found the installation process challenging so thanks to

"Visual guides" with screenshots for both a classic install and a
graphical

install can be found below the mirror list on the "get-devuan" page.
Instructions for disk encryption are linked to and back to the the
appropriate place in the tutorials:

The versions of these pages using the translations, are or will be
available as well?

There are some translations on chillfan/dev1fanboy's wiki pages at:
https://git.devuan.org/dev1fanboy/Upgrade-Install-Devuan
but I'm not sure how current they are. Perhaps he can clarify. If they
are, we can certainly add links to them. Additional translations are
always most welcome. Thanks for the suggestion.

[DNG] Website changes

2018-12-24 Thread Edward Bartolo via Dng
Good, provided an installer is obedient to do what is commanded.

What happens when an installer obstinately insists on installing LVM,
(ilLogical Volume Management), as it happened to me several times when
I was still using Debian, and also when I started to use Devuan? I was
left with no choice other than using debootstrap and chroot. In the
event debootstrap fails, I am left with no other choice other than
using a very dirty low level installation by extracting packages
manually. This latter step is still a step in the dark when everything
fails, as there is no list of packages of what debootstrap installs
when it works.

I suggest a package containing all packages that are usually installed
by debootstrap and a script to configure them. I will not suggest the
MS Windows way of suggesting a self extracting executable that
itstalls and configures what debootstrap installs, although that would
be a too-good-to-be-true.

[DNG] Website changes

2018-12-23 Thread golinux

Greetings!

Some changes are being made to the Devuan website as a result of recent
discussions on this list and the dev1galaxy forum.

1) One user commented that they had no idea which iso to choose. So
descriptions of the Devuan isos have been added to:

https://devuan.org/ (mid-page)
https://devuan.org/get-devuan (top of the page)

2) Others found the installation process challenging so thanks to
chillfan "Visual guides" with screenshots for both a classic install and
a graphical install can be found below the mirror list on the
"get-devuan" page. Instructions for disk encryption are linked to and

https://devuan.org/os/documentation/install-guides/graphic-install.html
https://devuan.org/os/documentation/install-guides/graphic-disk-encryption.html

Similar walk-throughs for refractainstaller will soon be added.

So why do they they look different than the rest of the site? Well, an
version of these pages was prepared last spring for inclusion on the
ASCII isos that use the debian-installer and it was just easier to keep
them in that format.

3) Finally, an explanation of non-free and contrib will soon be added to
appropriate page(s).

Cheers!
