I had to replace the amd64 iso. If you downloaded the one dated
20161203_0200 (in the file name) throw it away. It doesn't boot.

Replaced it with unofficial_live_devuan_beta_amd64_snapshot-20161205_2229.iso

Sorry for any inconvenience.

[DNG] Unofficial Devuan Beta Live

2016-12-03 Thread fsmithred
Unofficial Devuan-Live isos for i386 and amd64 are available. They've been
available since May, but with the release of beta2, I've updated them and
made some additions and corrections to the devuan themes.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/refrac … vuan_live/

Please note that while these images were made with refractasnapshot, they
are snapshots of pure Devuan. They are not the Refracta distribution. This
is a live version of what you get (or what you're supposed to get) with an
install from one of the official Devuan beta isos. Once the desktop, login
and boot themes get packaged, an install from the official isos will look
like this live version.

Important note: These live isos do not contain the familiar
debian-installer. You can install with refractainstaller which is
sufficient for most desktop/laptop situations. If you need lvm, raid, uefi
or automatic partitioning, you'll need to install from one of the official
isos.

note 2: There is no automatic wireless detection in these live isos.
Wireless driver packages are included in the user's home directory, and
you can install them manually.

As of a few minutes ago, there are torrent files for the downloads.

This is something I didn't think about. It might be better to have a
i686 kernel image without PAE. I don't even know if there is still a
kernel image without PAE in the official repos :D

Yep, or you could also boot without framebuffer support (second
option). I had considered using "vga=scan", but this might be annoying
on some old BIOS. I don't remember if it is possible to set multiple
resolutions with vga= (e.g., vga=792,788,normal), and I never liked
vga=ask. Suggestions on this point are welcome.

Yep, I have to edit live.cfg in iso/isolinux/, which is somehting I
will do for future snapshots.

Thanks for the fedback.

P.S.:@fsmithred, I belive you are one of those in the refracta team I

That makes sense. As I wrote, it was just a very quick check
using default presets. Didn't go as far as configure anything
at all. Thanks for the heads up!

Re: [DNG] Unofficial Devuan Beta Live Minimal -- UPDATE

2016-05-13 Thread . fsmithred
To boot the i386 iso in virtualbox, you need to go into the settings for
System, Processor, and check the box for "Enable PAE/NX". I just did it,
and it works great. One thing I had to do was hit TAB at the boot menu and
change the vga setting to vga=788 so it would fit on this small laptop
screen (1280x800).

The truncated items in the boot menu can be fixed by changing some of the
settings in the isolinux config files. I don't remember which ones, and I
generally do it by trial and error. If you comment out the rsync line that
copies the system in refractasnapshot, you'll end up with an iso that just
has the boot menu. It's a much faster way to test. (Or, you could just
shorten the menu entries.)

Hi Katolaz,

I did a *very quick* check of your live images on VirtualBox. Both
amd64 and i386 versions boot fine on a diskless VM created with the
"Debian (64-bit)" preset. I could log in, ping a machine on the
internet and perform a clean shutdown.

However, when I tried the i386 image on a VM created with the
"Debian (32-bit)" preset, I got the following error message right
after hitting enter on the boot menu screen:
+--
| This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:
| pae
| Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.
+--

One minor cosmetic quibble for all cases: The boot menu looked
truncated. E.g., what presumably should read "(default)" read just
"(defa" instead.

[DNG] Unofficial Devuan Beta Live Minimal -- UPDATE

2016-05-13 Thread KatolaZ
Dear Devuaners,

I have worked a bit more on the unofficial minimal images of Devuan
Beta. I have tried to incorporate all the comments I received, except
those which would have resulted in a substantial increase of the
image footprint.

The updated stuff can be foud at:

  http://devuan.kalos.mine.nu

We now have both amd64 and i386 images, and I have also included some
info to run the images on qemu. If you happen to use those images
successfully on another virtual machine environment, just let me know
how you did and I can update the webpage with the relevant info.

This new version has support for framebuffer (but you can also choose
to boot without framebuffer support, if you like), locales, keymaps,
mouse (via gpm), and a few more utils suggested by some of you. The
cost is that both images are slightly larger than 250MB (that was my
target upper bound), but I hope you would forgive me for the
annoyance. I will probably work on trimming more fat to stay within
the quarter-GigaByte in the next few days.

I have also added both a list of packages with version numbers (as
required by jaromil) aside with the result of "dpkg --get-selections",
which can be readily used to replicate the experiment on any other
system (i.e., by dselect update && dpkg --clear-selections && dpkg
--set-selections < FILE && dselect).

My plan is to have a new release per week, if apt-get upgrade install
new packages, until we get to stable.

Comments, suggestions, and critics are welcome.

HH
